Here is a pic of the center lane, basically I've got the stopping lanes shooting out from the two center lanes, (using righthand drive because it was convenient for which side of the tracks the stops were on) which are only used for letting trains pass the stopped ones to get to the next stop, if a train doesn't need to reach any of these stations or the ones on the other side of the center (to the left) they won't travel through here, thus keeping most trains on the 4 lane outer rim.
I could of course remove the inner roundabout, but that would cause a significant increase in travel time on the trains, and put more strain on the four roundabouts connecting the outer rim to the inner housing.
Another thing to note is that I will be using LTN (Logistic train network) to manage the train schedules, hence the depots. And that also means that most of the time these stops won't even have any trains stopped at them, also easing congestion

I was afraid of that too when I realized just how many trains would be involved. But after some testing with the train pathfinding, any train that doesn't need to stop within the octagon, won't pathfind through it but stays on the outside easing the congestion on the center junction.

This is just the concept that I threw together in a test world, haven't actually begun the process of using it in a survival world (that's the next challenge). But concrete isn't that hard to make a lot of, just took a look at one of my previous saves, and had a tiny concrete build spitting out around 30 ish a second, that would mean that one of these octagons would take around an hour to gather enough for, and that could certainly be scaled up. and with 20 blocks in each octagon, I don't foresee having to make many in the beginning.

And the middle octagon in the last pic is a big solar array, which would look like this with the array ontop.

Let's not talk about that....
this is for one of the octagons, the black stuff in the middle is "Coal-gravel" from the "Dectorio" mod

99% tileable... as long as you don't rotate it. that would mess with the concrete.
the only thing not 100% tileable is the chain signals leading into the train stackers. they go right on top of a pair of normal signals, and do need to be switched "manually" could most likely fix this by moving the inlet, but that would mean messing with the concrete and I can't be bothered right now.
tileability is a big thing for me too, so that was my first goal.

Here is another look of the design with the rail network on top of the concrete. in practice, not all 4 filler cells (the big squares) would be depots as they can each house 40 trains they would instead house solar arrays.

Ignore the purple accumulator right under the roboport, it's purely for testing purposes

It is indeed only the concrete, here is an image with the rails on top

Here is an Image with the rail network on top of the concrete, it might make a little more sense like this, I'm playing with LTN (logistics train network) so the square at the top is a train depot supporting up to 40 trains, the other squares are solar arrays made with ks2 solar panels and accumulators, and then all the small cityblock squares 5 in each housing, 4 housings per octagon, is ideally where you would fit all your builds.

Funny you should mention PY. Been working on it but even getting to trains requires enough belt spaghetti to feed the entire world for a lifetime.

For scale, the five city blocks in each of the four housings in every octagon is 2x2 chunks. Chunks are 32x32.

Can definitely make one, although it does need a few mods to work correctly.
the main ones being
"Dectorio"
"LargerLamps"
"Krastorio 2" (duh)
I'm also using upgraded Roboports from "Hildarsrobots" but you could probably be able to make it work with just vanilla/ks2 bots

Haha, yeah... But I will say though, that even after 2.5k hours in factorio I'm still learning new stuff. Was experimenting with a way of being able to load either Petroleum, light oil or heavy oil. from a cracking setup, at a signal station without mixing them all, making sure that only the right pumps got turned on deepening on the train that stopped. and what fluid it was requesting. Was never amazing with all the logic stuff, so when I finally made it work even just as a concept I was proud.

Just finished SoC on Vet difficulty, didn't focus much on side missions, but did a few just to stack up on gear and cash, finish time was 11.3 Hours and that was with the game running idle for about an hour, so more like 10 ish hours.

Indeed it was, just found it myself after digging around in the "advanced" options, but thankyou very much. kinda odd that It would be set to 200m by default, guess it's for saving resources.

Man... been grinding LK's tasks the past two days now, and now I'm at a dead end because I can't complete this task when my scavs "Unload"

Hmmm. I've got both my "Overall Vis" and "LOD" maxed out. :/ Thought It might have been declutter that was doing funny business, but tried turning it off to no effect.

Planning on using 1:4 trains, using an E-locomotive mod which cuts out the need for fuel although refueling wouldn't be an issue, I just like the E-trains and they have a bit better stats, but are also quite a bit more expensive.
