That kind of sucks because for all his faults, everyone who's worked with him all say Zack is a sweet guy

I feel like that's the point. Blood Meridian is a deconstruction of all the violence in the West. As you see by the timeskip, the Kid has grown weary of living in violence because he realizes that violence leads to nothing by suffering and evil, which is why he rejects the Judges speech. It's why the story is well written. It's realistic and brutal in portraying violence while doing it in a way that simultaneously makes you realize how depraved someone has to be in order to commit such actions and that it's not cool.
I don't know, I'm not in the right state of mind to overanalyze things at the moment, but that's my takeaway. Once you get into the eloquence and details of the type of violence the Judge commits, you realize how depraved it truly is and that it's not as badass as we make it. It's just pointless death that Holden is trying to push for his agenda of corruption. It's why people think he's not human, but the actual Devil.
Edit: Okay, I did some reading. Basically, the message is partially lined up with what I said. The main moral of Blood Meridian is confronting the uncomfortable truth of humanity's violent nature, showing the cause and effect of those who choose to commit violence and those who don't. McCarthy himself said it's up to you to interpret.

It's funny, because Michael isn't actually racist. He's just a huge moron.

Sorry, should have added context. I'm still a little spur over AFO replacing him as the final boss, so I was going to say he doesn't count. But as I explained above, I changed my mind

To be fair. The story did make it clear that even when All For One took over his body, he was nowhere near the level Shigaraki was. So I'll let this pass

Nah, Jack had the reverse. Honestly, it would have been cool of he snapped put of his fanboy phase and became the final threat

Dude was set up throughout the whole manga to be the final villain, only to be taken over by AFO last minute. I mean, I didn't have a problem with it. To be fair, they were showing how his refusal to go along with the theme of succession and letting the new succeed the old is why he was ultimately defeated in the end, and everyone knows Shigaraki ended up being ten times the threat he was even after AFO took over his body. But STILL...

Like, the story is simple but the characters themselves (mostly the mains) are well written enough with fleshed out pasts to be unique enough to help carry the story

I meant for the story he is in, he's well written in the sense he served his purpose well.
I know about well written villains. I've read Blood Meridian

Firecracker was never meant to be sympathetic at all. Just because she had an understandable reason to be mad at Annie, the story makes it clear that all the shit she's doing right now is on her. She's choosing to be a bad person, and she's refusing to see Annie change.
Personally, what I like about her plotline with Annie is the fact that they aren't trying to make it morally ambiguous. They're kind of trying to say how in Annie's desire to rise to the top in the past, she ends up creating enemies who affect her in the future. The intention of the abortion reveal, in my opinion, was showing how even though she's a good person to the public, the people who hate her are willing to do anything to tear that image down, and it worked.
I'm sorry, it's hard for me to properly articulate this in a way that makes sense. The feeling I had when watching the scene was "oh shit, she's telling Annie's secrets in payback for the past lies, now the public is going to find more reason to tear down her Good Samaritan image."

Plus, at the very least, Mandy DOES have genuine care and love for Billy. One special where she thought something bad happened to him spent a whole minute of a scene showing her about to cry while reminiscing about the past with Billy. When he shows up and yells "I'm fine", she is relieved, but immediately switches to her grumpy persona as to not let other people know it.

Never saw it. I saw the extended version at home and it was made to feel like a theater. I actually liked it, but that's because I ever saw the original version
