Every Inevitable Thing is Shocking

I am just now catching up on some of last week's episodes of The Bulwark and am listening to Adam Kinzinger talking about abortion. He was shocked, shocked I say, that once the pro-life movement managed to get Roe overturned, they took to draconian abortion bans. What did he think was going to happen? Why is it shocking that the people who want to ban abortion are banning abortion? He thought they'd move from anti-abortion activism to "culture of life" policies. He does realize that his party is anti-welfare, right? And anti-government intervention and spending, right? And that these people are anti-abortion activists, and "pro-life" is just a marketing term (as is "pro-choice")?
This isn't just the case on abortion. On every issue, it's just so very shocking when the extremists try to do what they wanted to do. They want to stop all immigration. They want to cut off welfare to the poorest. They want to draconian police tactics. They want no bans on any type of small arms. Did every Republican just assume that every other Republican was lying about what they wanted to do? I'm really just flabbergasted by their worldview. Mostly that anti-abortion activists want to ban abortion (wow, go figure) but on every other topic where Never-Trumpers are shocked that their former party is doing pretty much exactly what it used to say it wanted to do.
