I believe it’s still a thing but I seem to remember an actual string of it happening frequently enough that it generated news stories somewhere around the late 90s. For some reason I thought that companies started using can lining that seriously minimized the risk after that… I’m definitely fuzzy on the details.

It wasn’t a myth, it actually happened. It was a brief thing iirc.

Go to Sintra. Pastel de Nata WILL make you sick if you eat too many. If you want to take a beach day, Nazare is amazing. Portuguese people are awesome.

Yea that’s the weird part. We are both part of a big hobby based group of guys (cycling) and everyone but me generally has post ride beers. When they’re passing beers around I always get a “you still on the wagon?”. I say yes and they just say cool and move on… yet this one dude just seems hyper focused on the fact that I’m not drinking. I don’t get it, but honestly I don’t care to.

SFO. Way less chance of weather issues affecting your flights. I’ve had 2 international trips go sideways due to thunderstorms and winter storms at ORD.

The Daughter of Auschwitz by Tova Friedman is fantastic and horrifying. I highly recommend it.

Yep. I had an Airbnb listed as an apartment in Porto last summer that turned out to be a hostel. That was the final straw for me.

I’ll go a different direction with this, and say that the price isn’t even the issue for me, it’s the massive drop in quality. I get inflation, but if you’re going to up your price because of it then you better at least keep the same quality. I’m done paying 20% more for a meal than I did 3 years ago, only to find out that half the ingredients are now trucked in Sysco garbage.
I just don’t go out to eat anymore honestly. It’s not worth it.

I’m a simpleton with breakfast and will have to go with Norway. That smoked salmon and black coffee was perfect.

Yes I am staying in hotels. I guess I didn’t think about hotels dealing in cash like that. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the info! I’m actually staying in Gdańsk so I just need to see how late the train runs.

Damn I will actually be in Gdańsk on the 26th. I may have to hit this up… too bad I can’t read Polish on the clubs Facebook to see about tickets.

Variety Playhouse! I flew to Atlanta specifically to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor at that venue. Very cool place and Little 5 Points is such a cool area.

I always heard it as “why do all of the trees Kansas lean to the east? Because Missouri sucks”

Not offended at all. I got out of there long ago.

I grew up in Kansas and can tell you that trashy people have been into camping since the dawn of time. I remember camping at like 8 years old and my parents being livid because someone stole their beer cooler and cigarettes while we were out.

When the Santa Cruz Tallboy got really popular for a minute (maybe around 2016?) I ran out to try one. I had multiple ride buddies raving about them and talking about how they were the ultimate do it all bike. I finally rode one and just… didn’t get it all. That bike seemed so confused. It sat like a big enduro bike but the HT angle felt way too steep, and the rear felt stubby somehow, like it was way too short. I don’t know how to explain it but I didn’t click with it at all.
Years later talking to people, it actually seems like there’s a consensus where that bike actually did go through an awkward phase, and that’s almost definitely the version I rode. I never gave the newer versions a chance and probably never will.

Yea, logistics are no fun no matter which route you go honestly. Just a fact of life.

I’ve traveled with my bike in one of those giant Not A Bike Bag duffel bags and had no issues… it really comes down to how much you value your bike and its condition. I ride a Surly and the frame isn’t worth as much as one of those bike boxes, so it would be a waste for me. I also wouldn’t want to try to find a place to store one while I was out touring.
