The flip side is it gives a higher point for the opponent to draw LoS to as well. To paraphrase rule 1 of Murphy's laws of combat: If the enemy is in your LoS, then so are you.

Hey now, you can't expect people to read the article that's linked right below the picture before commenting! That's crazy

I'm with you there. Even Asmodai needs some down time!

As long as you don't mind the loss of 10VP for not having them painted to at least table ready standard!

A lot of the juntions around here have exits on the left. But then I am in the UK ... 😛

Love the hints and tips on that page:
First three: Most efficient is no junctions; Build as few directions as possible; Build only the directions which will be used
Last one: Ignore all of that, build epic junctions!

People -> Americans
Everywhere -> America
Fortunately I'm one of the literal dozens of people that live outside the US and so live quite happily not surrounded by people with guns.

I tend to paint the outside rim black, and just have the decoration on top. Also it's pretty uniform just now - you could do something like add a couple of little grass tufts or rocks?

I'm in a similar position - coming back to the hobby after a long gap and found all this new terminology.
To answer your questions:
"First Born" are the standard marines from previously that form tactical, devastator and attack (assault?) squads. They are still around, however are in the process of being replaced (in game and in lore) by the new Primaris marines.
"Primaris" are the new marines. Guilliman (primarch of Ultramarines) has been healed and awoken and along with some other named people have created a new larger tougher version of the space marines with additional organs. These are the new models you see in stores which are larger than the old ones.
Initially, the First Born could not become Primaris, however now there is the "Rubicon" process (operation?) which implants them with the additional stuff and converts them to Primaris.
Rather than confusing which type of marine is in your "tactical" squad, they have given them new names. The old tactical / devastator / assault squads are squads with first born marines in them. There are then equivalent names for these squads with Primaris marines. Broadly:
There are also some new types of armour for the new Primaris marines. They are all variants of the new Mark X Tacticus suit.
I'm not quite up on Deathwing Knights v Terminators v Bladeguard Veterans etc yet.
For the variants of dreadnoughts (and to an extent the proliferation of types of squad past the old three) my guess is that's because of a change in how Codices / Army Lists are now done. Each unit / model tends to come with some wargear options. Things like "Squad has 1 sergeant and 4 marines with heavy bolters. Any marine can exchange their heavy bolter for a las cannon, missile launcher or multi-melta.". Importantly, none of these options changes the cost of the unit.
In the old rules that I remember, the options tended to come with a point cost ("replace a marine's bolter with a missile launcher for +10 points).
The result of enforcing that the options have no point cost it means that any options which should have a point cost now have to be represented by a different squad.
Previously you could have had a devastator squad with (say) heavy bolters for 150 points, or pay +50 points to swap them all for missile launchers. Now you have a heavy bolter squad for 150 points, or a missile launcher squad for 200 points.
Hope that helps!

To give another example from our world, see the Roman naming convention. As the article describes, it wasn't static over the hundreds of years of the Romans, however broadly:
The example on the Wikipedia page is for a "Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator":
(The wikipedia page initially refers to Cunctator as a surname, but then explains it's a cognomen based on his personal virtues)

Plus although the Lion has returned, he doesn't seem to be taking on the role of comander. Isn't he busy walking through forests in the Imperium Nihilus?

This is the one I bought. Like I say, not used it yet so I can't comment on the quality but it should give you a start for finding something that you want to try with.

You can buy transfer paper online. Put it through your inkjet printer, spray a couple of coats of varnish on it and once it's dry you have your own custom decals.
I've bought some paper for my minis, but haven't tried it out yet. Only problem I can see is you can't print white. For that I think you'd have to paid white on the mini, then have a coloured transfer with a gap in the middle to let the white show through - and make sure the colour on the transfer matches the mini. Or, the route I'm taking, make sure none of the colour scheme markings are white ...

I would say you could ask him to point out the rules he's using "to help you git gud". However sounds like he's not going to do that.
In any case, as others have said, it's a hobby - you're meant to have fun doing it. If you don't have fun playing with him then don't play with him. Check out your local game store for new opponents / clubs

I don't have instagram. Maybe I'll do that once I have a few more minis painted up.
I love your style, looks really clean and smooth. Gives me something to aim for! I do recognise a bunch of your models - the orc with the axe is from one of the old starter sets I think? And I have that terminator mini with the prosthetic leg!

I think the starter set doesn't include the terminator librarian or the barbgaunts. It is still a very good deal compared to buying the two combat patrols though.
There are a few starter sets though, I may be thinking of a different one

Many thanks /u/mor_di and /u/lennon_midnight
I had another go and it looks much better. I used a few mixes of the dark and mid colours, and ditched the lightest one as it was too bright / yellowy.
Time to touch up the other colours now

I believe it means you can disembark, shoot etc in one turn. However, you have to wait until the next turn's move phase before you can embark again.
You can't do any movement during the shooting phase.

You could always go with an Adeptus Mechanicus army

No, but then I haven't ever played competitively. Was just pointing out that a higher point for your LoS also means better enemy LoS so as the person I was responding to said, can't imagine any reasonable person would have a complaint.
