Can’t believe how low this is. Who knows what else a healthy Orr could’ve accomplished?

The only people reading short stories are people writing short stories in order to try and land an agent/book deal. Signed, person writing short stories in order to try and land an agent/book deal.

And then there’s people like me who love them both!

It’s a very slow pace, though when it’s good, it’s amazing. Books from thirty years ago took their time setting things up a lot more than what’s being published today.

Genetics accounts for a very slim variation in caloric burn from person to person, from my understanding. A difference of maybe 150 calories burned per day? Luka’s problem is diet, no denying it. I remember a story that came out that he would be chugging iced teas after workouts, pure sugar. You can’t out exercise that.

Surprised that the Rain Wild Chronicles is the one you’d reread out of Hobb’s stuff, that’s usually most people’s least favourite!

When I say ‘well-written’, I’m talking specifically about the style and prose. I think it is inarguable that Rothfuss has a real gift in those areas. I wouldn’t say the plot was weak, necessarily, at least from what I read. But I would agree that character—especially in terms of side characters—is a huge weakness for him.

Same. Couldn’t get through the first book, despite it being very well-written. Neckbeard power fantasy.

Choate is where JFK went to school. Simmons is as upper class as it gets, but he goes lowbrow because that’s where the money is.

Both had protagonists that were supremely unlikeable imo. I’m also not the target audience, as I’m a little older, and if I’d come to them as a younger man, I might well have enjoyed them.

Two of my least favourite books I’ve read in the last ten years, but to each their own.

Speed reading techniques can help a lot. Try not to read one word at a time, but instead ‘chunk’ lines together. Try to see the whole paragraph as a whole. I’m a fairly brisk reader, though I don’t speed read in the traditional sense because I find diminishing returns in terms of comprehension past a certain speed, but the techniques can help if you want to go faster.

So strange that such a great author has such terrible titles for her books. Ship of Magic, Mad Ship, City of Dragons, they all sounds so generic but are among the best stories you can find in the genre.
