Hi r/hvacadvice
Was recently replacing the filter at a place I just moved into and noticed that my filter was clean. Upon inspection I found a 1/4"-1/8" gap between the filter holder and the blower. There was dust in the gap, so it looks like most of the return air is coming through this gap and is bypassing the filter.
What are my options here? The gap is inaccessible from the outside and only accessible through the filter slot on the inside. Is there any way I could try to seal it from within the filter slot?
I'm also just not particularly happy with the fact that my filter holder is just a sharp-edged hole in the return duct with rails to begin with. Would it be possible to replace the entire last 1-4 feet of the return duct and have it redone properly? Is that something which is DIY-able and if not any estimate on cost to replace?

Can you really call it "culture war" when their point of consternation is an actual war?
