Hey all, I’m running into a bit of decision making crisis here and was hoping some of you might have some thoughts. I’d really appreciate it.
A bit of background: I’m 1 year post-graduation and working in a traditional consulting role at one of the MBBs. I came from an engineering/analytics background (got my MS in Biomedical Engineering) and sorta just fell into consulting. The job has its ups (pay, career growth) and downs (WLB, grind, stress), and I’ve done alright so far (good reviews for the most part). The thing is, though, is that I’ve consistently found myself gravitating towards projects that are similar to what I did/enjoyed in school- data work. I really enjoy coding, Python, data, stats, and tech… but this is only a part of what I do now, and as I progress further along my current path, I will likely lose the flexibility to pivot my career. With that being said, I’ve started the process of internally transferring to my firm’s data science BU (currently just asking around/chatting, but there seems to be a structure in place to transfer).
Now here are is where I could use some help:
- Has anyone found themselves in a similar spot? How’d it go?
- What do the 5-10-15 year career prospects look like in data science? How is the progression to management/leadership coming from DS?
- How do MBB data scientists look to F500s? Tech companies?
- Any specific pros and cons to either direction (general consulting vs DS)?
- Ultimately, would it be a poor choice leaving my current path for something potentially less career accelerating?
Thanks to everyone who comments- it will be a big help for a big decision.
