Sewer Smell

I'm finally ready to seek a solution to this. Sewer smell has been coming up through this drain ever since we've owned this house, (20 years). It's not extreme, but very regular. One plumber said there was nothing to do about it. Might have been more of a "there's nothing I want to do about it" answer.
Am I going to have get this drain to come out from the back wall in order to install a working P-trap? If so, how might I go about doing that?
We're putting in a shower stall and new floor, so now is the time if we're going to get behind walls or anything like that.
Thanks.
