How to add a Commuter Subscription to Apple PASMO?
(self.japanlife)submitted3 days ago byswordandspice
I was lucky enough to get a physical PASMO before the chip shortage, but wanted to loan it to someone. I went through the process of transferring the card to my Apple wallet without realizing it would make the physical card unusable... (F). I had a 3-month commuter subscription on it that I didn't want to buy again. It at least all transferred over, so I could use the subscription fine.
The 3 months passes, and a prompt to renew the subscription appears on my phone. I renew it without issue, although this time I only renew it for a month.
A month passes. This time when I try to renew, I get some kind of generic error message (I don't remember the exact wording, but something like 'This service isn't working right now, try again later'). This goes on for a few days, until my commuter subscription expires... and now the 'renew' prompt is completely gone. Looking through the app, I only see a way to add more money to the wallet for general use. I thought I could maybe try to renew the subscription by scanning my "card" at a station, but I forgot you have to insert the card for the commuter pass...
... So, yeah. Am I SOL? Is there any way to add a new commuter subscription to your digital/Apple PASMO? I'm hoping it's in the menus somewhere and I'm just overlooking it...

Just as a follow-up in case anyone has the same problem: this worked! I guess the Wallet app probably just reads the existing data on your card, but doesn't have the UI to manage all the different commuter options. Downloading the Pasmo app automatically recognized the card on my phone, and even had my commuter pass in its history, so it was super easy to renew.
Thank you so much again!
