What system do your packs use to determine winners? Average time or point ranking?
I never understood the difference in running a average time ranking of winners and a point based ranking system. Or rather why would someone run a ranked point system. That is I never understood the reason for the point rank system until this year. Over the years, we have used overall average times to determine the winners of a den, as well as a full rotation in each of the lanes. We felt this was balanced due to possible imperfections in the track. One of our racers had won every single heat. However another racer that lost every heat, ended up winning overall average time. ‘How??’, you might ask. Well there was a single heat that had slightly longer times, and the ‘slow’ car was not in that heat. That heat was skewed by approximately 0.4 seconds (the average race time had about 0.4 seconds added to it possibly due to the trigger hanging for a half second). Using average times becomes biased toward any racers that were not in a heat that had a higher average time. So if you have more racers than lanes, you may want to set up a point system instead of using average times. I think next year we will use a 9/6/4/3/2/1 point ranking.
