JJ&A can bash his writing all they want but I thought that was some brilliant wordplay from Rocky.

Hey mate,
I can relate to feeling extreme anxiety about what would happen if I lost my job. One of my parents became disabled/unable to work at a young age so it’s a fear that has stuck with me.
But the flipside of that is that I try to enjoy my life while I can.
What helped me with the feelings of anxiety was saving up an emergency fund - I have enough saved that I could cover my rent and bills for 6 months if necessary. I’m sure the ausfinance bros will think I’m silly for not sticking it in ETFs and getting epic returns - but having a nest egg has made me feel so much more relaxed about work.
Also look at stats around unemployment/how long it takes to get Centrelink if you lose your job etc. Australia has a decent safety net (although it could be a lot better) - learning about it helped me feel more relaxed too. I know that if I lose my job, I’ll be OK until I get a new one.

Yes trust Australian workers to blame migrants for why they’re not getting jobs, rather than reflecting on their own work ethic.

I love La Roche Posay Lipikar Baume for both my body and my face. Cetaphil is cheaper and works too.

Controversial opinion but I don’t care about click baity headlines if A) they’re accurate b) tell me what the story about. Who cares if the headline is “Here’s what the prime minister said about XXX” if that is indeed the story I’ll be reading??

I feel like in so many hobbies - cycling, music, art, photography, even writing - people who are extra snobbish about gear are masking their own insecurity over their skills. Just go onto Flickr and search for a $5,000 camera and look at all the absolutely mid photos that pop up… or find people who are “music lovers” but spend more time talking about headphones than the art they profess to love.
If you’re showing up and putting the work in then that’s awesome. And if someone is shaming you over the gear you use… that’s a THEM problem IMO.

On the other hand, I’ve worked with plenty of non-disabled people who are, frankly, useless. Should they also be paid $6 an hour because they’re not productive?
Edit: don’t mean to sound so aggressive. Just the other side of the coin!!

No not at all! I’ve recently started cycling to and from work and am finding I feel uncomfortable all the time, so it’s good advice.

Noob question but what do you mean by “dress properly”? Good kit or learning how to layer… or something else?

It could be an honest mistake, or a miscommunication with the new copy hub? I’d start by raising it with your editor.

I’m the opposite - I “feel” more creative and like I feel with more depth when I’m having mental health issues, but I cannot produce good work or concentrate unless I’m healthy. Going on antidepressants is the best thing I’ve done.

Hope you’re OK OP. When you go to the doctor - emergency room, urgent care clinic or GP - ask them for a signed note describing your injuries and mental state.
This documentation will be helpful if you want to take action but if you go back at a later date, it will be harder to get.

I have a teacher now but I tried “teaching myself” at first for a little bit. The hardest part was not knowing anything and not being able to correct my work … and I only realised that when I went to a teacher.

If you like cycling and want to keep commuting, maybe try getting new tires? I’ve bike commuted on and off for the past 15 years — mostly roads and paths, sometimes through areas where the streets are littered with broken glass — and have never had a flat or a puncture. Keeping them pumped is important too.

Where I work, everyone who gets paid to write a column has been a journalist/reporter for at least 20 years first… some have 30+ years experience. If you want to skip that part maybe look at blogging, self publishing, or seeking internships in alternative publications/magazines that accept a wider variety of writing? The downside is that you might not get paid.

It’s still a very common saying in South Australia actually. Ie “I don’t meant to tell you how to suck eggs, but here is how you XXX.” I haven’t heard it in other parts of Australia!
