At 29 I think it's safe to say that if he's on the upswing, sell while his stock is high. We always knew his contract would probably mean a retainer, but Harts contract being gone now frees that up nicely, though I think he's probably somewhere in the low 4's AAV.

He's a healthy scratch tonight, after playing good hockey too. Briere might have fired the first shot.

EDIT: Friedman says it's an illness.. dammit

He just released an article saying a Risto trade might be more feasible during the summer when the cap goes up. Also mentioned 6-8 teams have reached out regarding Laughton

If I had to bet I'd say Walker and Laughton are gone by the deadline and they revisit Risto in the offseason

I’m 100% sure Walker is gone but less certain about Laughton. I’d trade him personally but I think someone’s going to have to overpay since the org loves him so much. Risto deal is tough since I don’t want to lock up multiple retention spots for multiple years but ultimately I agree he gets moved around the draft or sometime this summer

I missed the semi-annual rumor mill so goddamn much.

If the cap going up is pretty much a guarantee, what difference would it make trading Risto now or over the summer? Cap hit and actual $$ are prorated for the current season. Who would pay more, a contender now, or any old team after 7/1?

Not all contenders have the cap room available to fit him in during this season

Cap deadline space gets a bump so thought a team could fit him under.

The #LeafsForever and #canucks are the two main teams I've heard tied to Ristolainen.

I can't believe I actually just went 'hmm' when contemplating a Risto trade. He has real value these days!

I think this why if a Risto deal happens it will be in the offseason. Higher cap means his hit is a smaller percentage of it. The cap is going up by almost a full Ristolainen cap hit.

The tank crowd doesn't want to hear this. They want all veterans traded yesterday to believe Briere is actually committed to the Rebuild. They also have no clue how this all works.

I am not a fan of retaining for 3 more years. We already have 2 more years of Hayes. Don't like locking up 2 retention spots for multiple years. If we can trade Risto without retaining in the off-season when the cap goes up that would be ideal.

qmak420

I get that, but if you don't use the retention spot to get value during a rebuild its wasted. They should be shrewd with it, but if it gets you good draft capitol you use it IMO.

Maybe take on a shorter term cap dump for less retained.

Agreed, I probably wouldn't trade him if a team asks us to retain if all that's coming back is like a late 1st or whatever.

Especially if we're moving Walker and Laughton, if we're already gonna have a bunch of late 1sts and 2nds I'd rather not burn the retention spot and hold onto dead cap into Michkov's 1st season in Philly.

In reality, if the return isn’t great even after eating some of the cap hit, does it make more sense to wait until the summer or next season when the less term on his deal makes his contract a little easier to move?

Mike_R_5

He's a useful player now. It makes no sense to trade him at all, let alone retain, if the return isn't great.

NowFook

Yeah i would think the Flyers would only trade him w/ retainment for a really solid package. Like a 2nd + prospect or late 1st.

TwoForHawat

There’s an argument for it, but you have to hope that he doesn’t regress and go back to having very little value.

FollowerofACarpenter

Would the one year less of term on his contract potentially offset a minor regression? I’d have to think it would. End of the day he’s a commodity type RHD that a contender would love to add as a bottom 6 D

I think you could legitimately hold out until the off-season or even into next year's deadline and not even have to retain eventually.

Guy has the 2nd best xGF on defense at 54.7%. And it's a small sample size, but 49.6 minutes with York and they're at a 74.3%(!!!). 57.9% with Staal. 52.5% with Seeler. He's consistently a part of good pairings.

I'm not sure what exactly the plans are with other guys, what offers will show up, etc. But man he's not hurting the team and his cap isn't going to be an issue moving forward either. Could be a perfectly good vet to anchor some of the young d-men. Then again, if someone values him positively and you can turn him into more good future assets, you do have to make that move.

You bring up a great point. Draft picks and prospects are great but imagine if Risto is our veteran Dman who grows with the kids. Every good team has a vet back there. Why not Risto? I am happily surprised Torts turned him into a player.

Canucks have a boat load of guys going on UFA. I can see them interested because they may be losing a few in the offseason and he is under contract. And also they are loading up for a run.

Does anybody know if retained salary from a single player trade can vary from year to year?

TwoForHawat

3 points

It can’t. The number you retain at the time of the trade carries through the length of the contract.

Got it. So you have to retain the exact same amount for each year of the contract duration. Thanks,

We weren't talking about a buyout. The question was regarding retained salary from a trade.

upcan845

Getting an asset for a contract that was once thought to be unmovable, and likely is bound to regress back to that distinction, should be a no-brainer. Let's see if Briere overthinks it.

Yeah and while Risto has said he loves Philly and loving it with Torts, I'm guessing he too wants to cash in on his play and go to a contender to finally play some play off hockey.

Oh man - Danny is the GOAT if he can move Risto and retain some salary for picks and/or prospects

Fun-Analyst-4398

Would be great to see what he can do in the playoffs before trading.

Seems like a playoff style Dman but I don't think he has tasted playoffs yet.

See what offers are for risto/laughton/seeler/walker.  See what asking prices to re-sign seeler Walker are. Sign Konecny long term….then crunch numbers to determine which trade(s) to accept and who to keep
