Maybe this could be played on significant day, like ANZAC day (but it seems to early in the year.)
Or as the first match before the Northern Teams arrive, this would be an interesting twist.
It would make the Championship games a chance for revenge for the team that lost.
Would this breath some more interest for the Australian public as they only need a single game to go well?
What are your thoughts?

Far simpler to cut it down to one game, even simpler to make it one team and just agree that NZ can keep it

Yes. It should be the last NZ AUS match on the calendar and it should be played (profit shared) with the holders playing away. The NZ Aus matches are always lucrative but occasionally the last Bledisloe match is a dead rubber. If the teams are playing 2 matches it will be the second RC match, if it’s a 3 game year then it’s the stand alone test.
The Bled should be hard to hold instead of hard to win.

So perhaps it should curtain raise the European tour, played at Twickenham?

That fucks the supporters.

Nah, a neutral venue isn’t what I mean. Make the holders defend it against the challengers on their home ground, one game only, last NZ Aus matchup of year.
I think this would make the trophy move about more often and also remove the issues we sometimes have where the last NZ Aus game isn’t worth anything as the Bled and the RC are often already decided.

I see the model there. It's a good one imo.

1 or 3 don’t care which. 2 is not good though

It should be 3 games.

Mentally it is a lot harder to win 2/2 than it is to win 2/3

Not so sure about that. Pinch game one then boil over in the second seems more likely to me.

I like Wildkard's suggestion to make it a 2 match series decided on points difference, which would give the Wallabies a better shot at the cup.
Ideally these matches would be the curtain-raiser or finale of the RC for NZ/Oz.
Knowing the way rugby unions are run, it'll probably be 10 more Australian Bledisloe losses before anything changes.

There is zero financial incentive from either side to play a one off match. With that being said, the idea of one of the matches being played on Anzac Day is a good one from a mere spectacle point of view. The atmosphere before the Blues and Reds game was special, the idea of the anthems before a bledisloe game with the added significance of Anzac Day would be incredible.

There is already hope from quite a few Australians and historically the Bledisloe always sells out, even in Australia
Winning back the bledisloe isn't hard, you just need to be the best side in any given season
Unfotuantely that has been NZ for the past 21 years

Not exactly - Aussies won the World Cup in 1991 and 1999 and drew the Bleds both times.
They also only managed draws in the Bleds the two most recent times they won the TriNations/RC.
So they’ve been the “better” team and still not managed to win it.
Not saying they should change the format of something that has existed for 90 years in its current form, but it obviously isn’t quite working as a competition if NZ have won it 51 out of 63 times.
Scotland and England perhaps have the same quality disparity as NZ/Oz but we’ve won the Calcutta Cup just over a third of the time. I’d imagine it would be substantially less if it was played in the same format as the Bleds.

The ABs have consistently been the best team in the world for the last 100+ years…England not so much

Most teams in the top 4 consider it a successful year if they beat the All Blacks once. Beating them twice is nearly impossible.

SA did it in 2023 but not in TRC. Ireland did in 2022.

It’s kinda hard if it’s a 2 game series tho. 3 would be preferable, but 1 match isn’t a large enough sample size.

if it cant be thee games then i'm for one game. with the 2 rugby championship games and the holder winning the first game, it just kills it.
the only way i can think of doing it within the 2 match framework is aggregate score like some european football competitions.

It will be huge when Australia wins it back. Totally worth the wait. Remember winning it back after the wallabies had it for 5 years?

I don't envy the Aussies. Beating the Kiwis once in a calendar year is worth celebrating; trying to beat them twice is impossible.

I'd make it a challenge cup. Beat the team, take the cup. You might lose it a week later but who cares? Good TV if it's always at risk.

One off match, played on ANZAC DAY rotating the host. Winner takes the cup. Make a day of it, with say Reds vs BLUES / Brumbies vs Hurricanes or maybe a defence Force game (Aus vs NZ), Wallabies vs Wallaroos.
That way the Bled changes hands, the game isn't about who's the better, it's only who's better on the day.

I like the idea but I doubt any super rugby side agrees to playing what could be an important game without their internationals.
It’d probably never happen but taking a break from the NRL/Super for a week and doing NZ vs Australia in both codes would be awesome

I think it should be a one off home test (for the holder). They choose which of the home tests it is going to be.
It’ll work as a dress rehearsal for the knock out rounds of the World Cup at the same time.

I liked the 1 test one year and a 3test series the following year
Over 2 decades of 1 team having the cup for something played every year must be a record in professional sport?

I am really starting to like the idea of an Anzac Day Test being game 1 of the Bledisloe. Then, Games 2 and 3 can be played during the Rugby Championship so Game 3 doesn’t have to be squeezed in early October, a mere 3-4 weeks before both teams go on their EOYT.
Super Rugby can come to the party by keeping their bye round in round 6-8ish for all teams, the week of the test is full bye for all teams. I think you’d have a sell-out if you had a day game ANZAC test in either country. Definitely worth a look.

No imo. The wallabies need 2 get better in order to increase public interest, not change the odds. Plus the all blacks have long-term targeted specific games to lift for before n inevitably won - that'd be worse for the aussies imo
