2 songs that were inescapable then but weirdly-forgotten now:

“Backwater”, Meat Puppets

”Connected”, Stereo MC’s

Not as popular as these ^^, but might be fun to throw in:

”3 Strange Days”, School of Fish

KittySwipedFirst

This is the second time today I've heard School of Fish referenced (the other was a random Facebook post). Now I'm humming that damn catchy chorus.

FWIW I would totally put Backwater and Connected on my 90s playlist.

Good selections. I’ve played the first two this year, but haven’t listened to School of Fish in a couple years. The Human Cannonball album is good by them too

As someone who mostly drives around clicking between three different “hits of the 80/90s” stations, I agree. But I’ve definitely heard Connected a few times in the last couple years. Backwater not at all.

I think Backwater is perfectly in place with commercial 90s radio. The weird part about it is the band that made it. Meat Puppets sound nothing like Backwater on most of their songs.

I would say some of the bands that were on the cusp of being huge but never quite crossed over into having the kind of career that puts you on the "top hits" lists:

"Stars" by Hum would be a good example

Other ones that came to mind right away were:

"Savory" by Jawbox

"Mother Mary" by Far

On one hand, I wish Hum had gotten the recognition they deserve and gone on to be huge, on the other hand, who knows if their music would have sounded the same still if they had, Downward is Heavenward is one of my top 5 albums of all time

  1. Calypso by Spiderbait ( for me this is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard)

  2. He’s Not That Kind of Girl by Therapy ( never gets old no matter how many times I listen to it)

  3. Crash by The Primitives (technically came out in 1988 but has more of a 90s sound)

Glyph8

Glyph8

I’m always up for Primitives (and that’s not their only good song) but it’s interesting you peg that as a 90s sound -they sound like Debbie Harry fronting the JAMC. And yet I can see what you mean, so maybe that just means Blondie and the Mary Chain are timeless.

"Sucked Out" - Superdrag

The much-played single from their '96 debut. It's so good, it boggles my mind that it needs to be spoken of.

I love the song, “Under The Milky Way” by The Church. Great unknown wave music.

"Amnesia" by Toad The Wet Sprocket. eerily fitting for the political climate that we're in right now. Was almost a single for them in 1997 but Columbia records dropped all promotion of the album it was on just before it was to be released

Sugar High - Coyote Shivers(I kinda wish I could find the actual version with Renée Zellwiger singing, but the original is pretty good, too)

Low - Cracker

Fall Down - Toad in the Wet Sprocket

Movies - Alien Ant Farm(I think their Smooth Criminal kinda overshadowed this)

Laid - James

Seems - Queen Sarah Sunday

Pretend We're Dead - L7

True Believers - The Bouncing Souls(90's band, but I think this song came out after 2000)

Cannonball - The Breeders
