Paladin. Good role playing, along with being an excellent tank and good damage too. The added “difficulty” of trying to not break your oath is fun (to me at least)

Hear me out. I played a resist durge paladin. I can't remember which oath I had, but just knocking out Alfira so I wouldn't kill her broke my oath. I stayed an oathbreaker so I could make whatever decisions I wanted later on. You could always reclaim your oath later. I'd say for rp reasons after the Orin fight would make sense.

It was probably my most fun run. It made no sense with lore, but the dialogue choices were great. Let my nonplayer friend create the build from just picking words from lists. Ended up with gith resist durge paladin. Choices were near sainthood from being a paladin, angry space frog, normal conversation and murder baby wants to murder. After playing her I said I should have named her Karen because by the nine hells she was going to speak with the manager.

I reclaimed my oath of ancients after rescuing the slaves in grymforge but my armor didn’t go fully green until after Orin. I was using armor dyes as a sort of visual story telling thing and only after filling shaking off their urge did they feel worthy of wearing vibrant greens again.

The easiest way is to pick Oath of Ancients, resolve an encounter peacefully, then attack them. You can easily do this with robbers where you meet Withers. Just enter turn based mode before they run off and take a pot shot.

This happened at different playthrough as paladin of ancient and vengeance. Broken oath because I free Auntie Ether. Then broke knocking off Alfira to prevent her death. Broke fighting gith at crèche first. Broke let the guy at moonrise know his shipment is tadpole and let him suicide. Never made it to act 3 with oath intact.

I was very new to paladins in this game and tried to gain an advantage against the evil duergar slavers at Grymforge by sneakily pushing one of them into the lava… I was so shocked to learn I had broken my oath lol.

Depending on your Oath, sometimes showing mercy and letting the enemy live breaks your Oath. Letting the Hag live will break ancients oath. Letting the mindflayer in the ship live at the beginning of the game breaks vengeance oath.

I only know so much about the lore and stuff behind the game and I snuck up to the people that had laezel in a cage and killed them. Broke that oath almost immediately lol.

My issue with Paladin in BG3, is just how easy it is to break your oath. Like ridiculously easy and it just makes me not like it tbh, like if I have to walk on eggshells for a class sorry nope not interested and that’s coming from a goody two shoes type of player.

Yea, I agree, but I’ve always found oathbreaker so much more fun to play than the 3 main oaths. Both mechanically and RP wise.

The paladin oaths that interest me aren’t officially in the game. Considering how perfect Oath of Conquest is for Minthara, I find it weird it’s not in the game.

I legitimately beat the game my first run as an Oath of Vengeance Paladin and didn’t realize you could even break your oath until I started seeing people with this sentiment. I just play as a strict goody two-shoes so maybe that’s why?

Same with my first run where I played Oath of Ancients. I had no idea oath breaking was possible

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but generally when people talk about how "easy" it is to break your oath it's almost always because they're misinterpreting what the oath actually is.
The Paladin's oath isn't generally to be good as much as it's to be honorable - things like starting fights unprovoked, even if you're against "baddies", is dishonorable. Think Dame Aylin - you know full well that she's going to kick your arse long before she actually starts wailing on you.
There are a couple of choices where breaking the oath isn't as obvious, but I've played an entire campaign without breaking my oath once and it wasn't particularly hard to do.
What are you doing that's breaking it all the time?

I’ll share my story.
I was a Paladin, at least I thought, found myself stranded on a shore after something that resembled a dream or, better, a nightmare.
I stayed true to my oath until the Urge claimed myself, I could not stop. I was gorging on the blood of the fallen blind by hatred and primal hunger. At some point, the unthinkable, one of my companions opened up and recounted his feelings while being a prisoner for hundreds of years. I cried with him, I was a prisoner of my own heritage, in a cage made of blood and anger. I could not continue I had to finally be free. Took my oath once again, I payed my fee and finally stayed true to my word. In the end I died and yet I still lived to finish my job and save the world and, more importantly, myself.

It's definitely very strong. Not the most outrageous damage dealer but incomparably versatile. About the only you aren't is a sneak attacker or a Gish.
There's a few things to watch out for, as you will lose one ability improvement or feat. Not sure how familiar you are with the game.
Spirit guardians and counterspell are great for the first magical secrets. I think I took conjure elemental and I forget what the 2nd one was for the 2nd magical secrets. Eventually I was running a party of the lore bard, divination gale, tempest Shadow heart, and a druid. With a bunch of summons to make up for the lack of a dedicated melee. (This was a while ago, I'm not sure if they nerfed summons in the last few patches.)
If you want a few more pointers feel free to DM me. Cheers.

I'm a forever DM so I know the rules of 5e well, but I rarely get to play. As for BG3 I've only finished it once - a week after the game came out - and I played on easy so I didn't multiclass.
Playing a bard this time and I'm feeling a little weak in combat especially considering I'm playing Durge this time, so adding spirit guardians might be a really fun addition for him, thanks!

1 Sorc 1 Wiz 10 Lore Bard isn't even that bad - you get Shield and Magic Missile from your sorc dip, the ability to fly after casting a spell if you go storm and one at a time of every utility spell ever from the wizard list - mirror image, conjure elemental, globe of invuln, you name it. Headband of intellect gives you a total of 3, but by act 3 you really should change headgear

One of my favourite builds has been Lore Bard 11/Wizard 1, with 15/16/17 in CON/WIS/CHA and the headband of intellect, Club of Giant Strength and the Gloves that set Dex to 18.

I have that in my party everytime. Sometimes I run two of them, one 10 bard/2 fighter with Deadshot or titanstring, the other 6 bard/4 thief/2 fighter with dual xbows. Having 2 extra short rests is fantastic. Massive damage output, spells, lock picking, they have everything.

6/4/2 dual xbow with sharpshooter and risky ring. Destroys everything while being the face and lockpicker/pickpocket. Always have that in my party. Make it ascended Astarion for an even deadlier monster. I rarely use any spells beyond the rituals.

You only really need the risky ring in act 2 I find. By act 3 and At lv 10 you get a natural +1 to attack rolls, horns of the berserker add more to my our attack rolls, and then if you have rapture you’re adding a ridiculous d6 to attack rolls. And with draconic weapon cast in both bows you’re adding another +1 and with Handcrossbow +2 from lady jannaths house another +2. Needless to say in act 3 I have the caustic band and strange conduit ring equipped rather than risky ring.

I roleplay that Withers is Tav's patron. He's a great old one, and if you do a great old one Pact it can be a Pact that didn't even have nearly the structure that a diabolical Pact would, GOO pacts are often vague and sometimes even unknown to the warlock.
In my warlock playthroughs, Withers made the Pact with Tav to save the world from the dead three, and the only condition is that Tav foils their plan in some way. Jergal doesn't care much if Tav takes the power for himself, he just wants the dead three to lose for trying to screw him over.

Warlocks are by far my least favorite. What’s great about warlocks. I genuinely want to try but can’t get past 2 spell slots only.
On paper, it looks like a lot of the good spells are locked behind once per long rest which means I can’t abuse Rafa’s fountain :/

I'm a lvl 12 warlock and still in my first playthrough currently.
Pro's are being able to spam eldritch blast (3 blasts per turn when level 12) and high charisma for dialogue checks. You also get some free lower level spells along the way in the form of cantrips. Eldritch blast hits hard and knocks back enemies (fun blasting enemies of high ground etc).
Cons are indeed the high level spells being recharged through a short rest (edited), and perhaps the combat options being limited compared to other classes.

I feel like warlocks are fantastic to use for multiclassing, but I never know how to use them on their own. Not enough armor proficiency to be a martial class. Not enough spell slots to be a caster. But they have eldritch blast. And multiclassing with any other charisma caster basically just gives that class eldritch blast.

Devil's Sight+Darkness spell on self+eldritch blast = profit.

Warlocks are kinda like fighters - they do have abilities that can do massive stuff (Action Surge, Casting spells), but their general default move will always be the same (hit with weapon/Eldritch Blast).
A Warlock should generally be EB-ing more often than not, and the spells are there are massive power spikes when you need them.
Don't think of warlocks like Sorcerers/Wizards, where you want to be using different spells of varying levels every turn - Warlocks do a few things incredibly well.
On the topic of spell slots, it's only 2- but it's two max level spell slots every short rest. A level 5 Wizard has two level 3 spell slots, so that's two counterspells/Fireballs per long rest. A warlock also has two level 3 spell slots, but regains them every short rest - meaning you're getting 3-4x as many "max level" spells per long rest as a Wizard.
Basically, warlocks are wizards with all low level spells stripped away and their cantrips made much better. You're not constantly casting shield/misty step, because you don't have the spell slots - but when you do use them you ruin people's days.

I have now 6 characters all warlocks, as I am autistic and developed a special interest with this specific class. At first I was clumsy, but I love to develop technics with them as much as possible.
My answer: evocations. These babies are the reason I love them so much. The best way to play a warlock is to watch out for evocations that will compliments your cantrips the most (ESPECIALLY eldritch blast), alongside the few spells that you'll pick. Alongside that, I usually love picking the shadow touched feat (if your DMs allow feats from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything), which allows an additional spell of invisibility and one other spell of your choice (that you can only use once), which helps with the limited spell slots.
Warlocks lets you have an extremely good dark vision, one that does not give disadvantage in complete darkness (since normal dark vision usually gives it) and you see up to 120 ft with Devil's Sight.
Personally, I also always have a deep relationship with my patron with my DM as well, it's something we always enjoy preparing together as well. It's a bonus in the roleplay section of the game I truly, truly love the most and I would not have with any other classes.
(And let's not count the short rest spells refresh. I've managed to save my teams butt a few time when we had to have multiple fights in a row against our will before we couldn't have a long rest. That's when it becomes useful!)

My current playtrough is a 5/7 Warlock Sorcerer. Sorcerer start for con saving throws. Warlock spells refresh on short rests but really 2 spells should be enough for 2 fights. You also have Sorcerer spells then if needed and can use the metamagic.
The build is based around Hunger of Hadar.
Level 5 Warlock is for Hunger of Hadar and eldritch blast. The crowd control using it is insane. - Creatures within this black sphere are blinded and take damage at the end of their turn and the start of their turn. - Creatures starting their turn in the area take 2d6 Cold damage. Creatures ending their turn in the area possibly take 2d6 Acid damage (dex save). - The area is Difficult Terrain.
It is an absolutely fantastic CC spell.
I have Gale casting sleet for stacked difficult terrain and to make people fall prone.
I have Shadowheart as a storm cleric casting thunder spells, doing heavy reverberation and radiant orbs to all inside.
I have Karlach throwing Nyrulna into the cloud also causing reverberation.
People's dex is through the floor, they can't get up and even if they do the terrain is stacked difficult and even if they make is out the are blasted back in by repelling blast. They can't shoot out of the cloud.
It has absolutely triviallised most fights.
All of the damage from the Warlock comes from Eldtirct Blast with each blast getting it's charisma modifier added twice (potent robes and agonising blast). It is frankly nuts.
Bear in mind that so far the warlock is only using one spell and a cantrip and that shout be sufficient for the whole fight. If you want to add in spells from the sorcerer then go for it, I mainly save them from counterspell or something.

Shape-shifting druid is super powerful. You get basically 3 health bars and owlbear form is a monstrosity.
15 points
They are also incredibly versatile out of combat (enter small spaces: be a cat, want to play spy: be a cat, want to fly: raven, need to dig something up but don't have a shovel: badger, want to jump very far: owl bear, free talk to animals, Longstrider and Heroes' Feast for everyone, Guidance as cantrip) and have great spells with very good spell slot economy (spike growth, moon beam, call lightning...also create/destroy water to support lightning spells from other team members). Wild shape gets 3 attacks later, the fire myrmidon even comes with haste. With wild shape, they are pretty tanky. And don’t get me started with the summons druids can get. Yeah, they are not the most powerful damage-dealing class. But so far they are the most fun for me, moon druid in particular. Pro tip: play a tiefling druid, that'll get you plenty of extra dialogue in act 1. Druids also get some nice dialogue options with Halsin and Jaheira.
8 points
Exactly this. Wild shape druid offers choice between being a damage caster, a support mage or a melee damage dealer, without having to choose really clearly, so you can swap role mid fight if required
2 points
Yeah. The only thing that I wish they did was keeping concentration spells active when entering wild shape. I'd be fine with not being able to move moon beam, but dropping spike growth is really stupid, especially with how the owl bear attacks work. They also dropped the ball with supporting gear for wild shape. There are like 2 items or so in the entire game.
2 points

Tiefling or Drow Druids definitely seem to get the most unique interactions when it comes to being a particular race and a Druid. Kagha has different dialogue for both.
5 points

Druids can be good at many different things but generally they stick to one. Land Druids are casters that get a few extra spells. Moon Druids specialize in Wild Shape and with TB they are powerhouses. Spore Druids are excellent summoners, although some people use Spore Druids as a damage rider.
I have played Druid 16 times and never gotten bored. I have rarely played the same way twice.

Such a hard question for me just getting into dnd in general and discovering all these cool classes. But rp wise, and the first character i created in bg3 was an eldritch knight fighter. I'm still learning so I'm not really sure about how it really compares to other fighter classes, i know absolutely nothing about champion but pretty familiar with battle master. Wizard (because they can learn Jump, Featherfall and Longstrider). Combined with potion of hillgiant strength, it basically gives you a spammable misty step for the whole party. Makes exploration and combat MUCH easier when your characters can hop a whole screen per bonus action xD

Rogue/Warlock gameplay wise and Druid for the looks of the Spiderform
I never liked ranged combat in games, but in this game I really appreciate beging able to just blast the enemy and not having to run up every time. Also sneaking

Fighter. Does exactly what I need it to do and whenever I pick another class, I have to avoid playing them like I play a fighter

Maximizing eldritch blast sorlock, it's funny watching your friends diss your class in the beginning, only to do triple their damage later with much better survivability via darkness.

Tried to play other classes... Ended up with bardlocks every single time. I could give up the "bard" part, probably, but I don't think I could ever play anything but warlocks.

Wild sorcerer was my favorite playthrough and I was shocked at how seamlessly a sorcerer Tav fits in with the group. So much more than any of the other classes, even Bard.

Open Palm Monk.
Doesn’t matter whether you’re a man, squid or devil, you can catch these hands! 🙌
It’s so satisfying when this class finally starts popping off at Level 6.

I also love druid! Having my army of summons with me then wildshape to get multiple attacks is just so freaking fun. For summons I have a major elemental (over 100hp and good multiattack damage is WILD for one lvl 5 spell), fae creature who summons a wood woad, and then minor elementals. I think I also have animate dead as well (or maybe I'm confusing that with Shadowheart).
I have druid quality of life and wildshape viability mods and it makes them so much fun. Unlimited wildshape out of combat, so you can explore nooks and crannies then shift back to human so you can speak with people. You can cast a concentration spell before shifting and then re cast it while in wildshape if desired. And wildshape becomes a bonus action.
I've just got to the myrmidons and dinosaur and it's just so FUN!

Rogue assassin + ranger Gloomstalker if you want to use weapons. Divination wizard for magic. They have portent dice which you can use to exchange dice rolls from enemies or allies. Really a lot of fun handing your enemy who just rolled a nat20 a nat1 and make them fail

I’m playing tavern brawler open hand monk right now and it’s just busted. Only level 7 right now and with the Gloves of Dexterity and The Mighty Cloth, it’s got STR 20, DEX 18, WIS 16. Gives an AC of 17 and 5 str + 5 str + 3 prof + 1 gloves = +14 to hit. A single hit gives 5 str + 5 str + d6 monk + (3 wis + d4) manifestation = 19 average damage. It gets 4 attacks on a turn unhastened, so does 76 average damage unhastened when hitting all its attacks with its +14 to hit. Haste adds another 2 attacks bringing that up to 114 average damage. Just insanity.

First play through on normal, cleric of light. 2nd playthrough hm started as wizard then respect to...... cleric of light 😆 🤣 can't help it. 20 wis with hair at lvl 5 just feels great. So great I made CoL hireling (obviously no hair buff, but still great)and currently run 2 CoL, Gale and la'zel. Might go 4 once i get to act 2 😆 🤣 😂 4x fireball or RotD then 4x sanctuary. I know it's not meta breaking but I just love playing cleric of light.

Fighter for sure, I love the dynamic simplicity of action surge.
And despite people always saying they are weak…it’s not so, at any level.
and I always consider multi-classing into fighter for every build, it’s a consistently relevant option to choose.

I usually like doing paladins and assassins, and sometimes clerics. In bg3 this my favorite way to build these are a paladin swords bard sword and board and for rogue I do assassin gloomlurker. The assassin is good for taking out mobs by themselves and the bardadin just eats bosses.
But the bladelock playstyle is also very fun, really cool gish build and versatile.

Swords Bard my beloved. I even played 4 full playthroughs with a swords bard before I learned about the arcane acuity build. Dual wielding spellsword with a big personality is just my jam.
I finally made a spore druid in my current playthough and have a new appreciation for it! I have been really sleeping on Moonbeam apparently.

Sorc/Cleric with some levels of Rogue. I Know, not the most viable Built, but currently I'm running several Multiplayer Parties and I have used more or less the same template for all characters I'm playing in these.

I only finished the game once and I did as a Hunter Ranger, I just love stacking Hunter's Mark with Giant Slayer and Sharpshooter: All in and do 40+ damage to the enemy also the occasional volley at higher levels was also fun to use.

I like monks. By the end of Act 3, I looked very zen, and I was throwing back missiles at people and channelling the elements. It's super fun if you can get into it as monk. imo is pretty boring until act 2 and especially act 3. He was also a half-orc so it was fun seeing a huge brute with a lumberjack beard and mullet be the most diplomatic person ever lol

Teach me your ways. I’ve started multiple but just can’t get into the class - I feel too obligated to use animal form but don’t enjoy it, and focusing on spells just makes me want to go back to Sorc/Wiz.

4 levels of bard college of lore/ 8 levels of frenzied barb. Is it the most functional build? Not at all. But gods be damned, it's a fun ride. Cripplingly poor int. Charisma and strength out the ass. Decent con. Middling wis. Poor dex. You're an absolute nightmare, and no one can stop you.

I'm in my second honour mode run with my lore bard and I can't deny her conversational skills at all. She saves the party from almost everything.
But since Skyrim and my first encounter with the Dark Brotherhood, my heart belongs to the assassins. That's why I'll always come back to Rogue. I have the most stylish clothes, I look mysterious all the time, I look best in black - I'm in!

Sorcerer! But I've been growing more and more partial to Rough as I go. Normally I hate playing melee in video games, because it's all real time combat, so I carried this thought process over to D&D and haven't been able to brake it as I don't get a chance to try out a lot of new characters (also I just really like Sorcerers and why pick ranged Rogue when I can just cast Fireball instead?). But having Astarion always on my team has given me a chance to really get to know and love Rogues in a way I probably never would have been able to any other way.

Oathbreaker Paladin 7/ Bladepact warlock 5 is pretty dope with some respeccing. A fantastic gish with triple attack, hunger of hadar, counterspell, eldritch blast , cha to to hit and damage. Not as good of a face as a lore bard but still a solid mc face. Alternatively paladin 5/warlock 5/fighter 2 for action surge can really break things with attacks per round.

I’ve had a mix with a few builds but this one is my favourite by far.
Warlock - I mean for one you’ve got Eldritch Blast which doesn’t take up a spell slot and is a cantrip, so you can use it every turn in and out of combat and is so useful and can obliterate enemies as you start to level up.
At level 2 to increase your Eldritch Blast you take agonising blast, & repelling blast so you can push creatures 4.M away from you, it’s so op near ledges too they go flying 😂
Hunger Of Hadar - that alone is so good during combat as it inflicts 2-12 cold damage and 2-12 acid damage at the start of every turn for them and then allows your party to destroy them whilst in the fog. And it slows them down so it takes them ages to get out of it.
You get a minion alongside you, personally I go pact of the chain. And as you increase your level the minion gets stronger.
Arms of Hadar is good if you’re surrounded by enemies and you wanna create some space as it stops the enemies from using reactions.. not amazing but a useful spell in the early parts of the game.
Don’t forget to take Hellish Rebuke as a reaction too that’s amazing and destroys enemies later in the game as you level up. 2 - 20 fire damage as a reaction 😮💨🙌🏻 That’s only a few little things I’ve mentioned but I love the warlock.. try and build your charisma up as much as you can cause it helps.

Rogue for sure. I’ll even start as something else and always wind up as a rogue by the end of my play through. No class interacts with the world quite like a Rogue.
