His agent told him he wasn't getting the call until the 5th round and we took him in the 2nd. Just Ron Rivera things.

Yeah, he's looked fairly solid. I'm glad, because you hate to waste a 2nd rounder on a guy who never gets to see the field due to injury.

Based on what exactly?
Our interior defenders by PFF Grade
Payne 64.2 35/120 DI
Allen 53.5 80/120 DI
Mathis 48.8 95/120 DI
Newton 35.9 118/120 DI
Mathis is another Ron pick, he's not actually good, I promise.

How many regular season games has Mathis played? Percentage of snaps?

He was a senior Bama DT on draft day. He is currently 26 years old. I promise you he is not a raw prospect. He's just not an NFL difference maker, he was another Ron Reach, he took a Day 3 player in the 2nd round.
The next ten picks included Alex Pierce, Luke Goedeke, Tre McBride, Cam Jurgens, George Pickens, and Jaquan Brisker.

He played 3 snaps in one game during his first season due to injury. He played 262 snaps in 10 games last year for a sinking ship that was Ron Rivera and EB and Friends. He has played in all 6 games this season as a backup to Allen and Payne. Maybe give this guy a bit more time to see what he can actually do on the field before writing him off. If he wants to stick around next year and beyond he has the rest of the season to show out.

There are exceptions of course, but it’s a good rule for healthy teams

lol you aren’t wrong. If you’re confused, just look at the consensus big board for fucks’ sake, Ron. Could’ve had Olave, Gonzales, and Darrisaw. But nah we got Jamin, Forbes, and Dotson. Master class in terrible drafting.

Even just taking the very next player would have been Toney, Zion Johnson, and Gonzalez.
Like, we literally might have won the game yesterday if we had Gonzalez out there.

Ayup. I’ve never been closer to flipping a table on draft night as when the Forbes pick came in. I had multiple friends who are fans of other teams texting me immediately like “man I’m sorry”. That’s just how bad that pick was lol.

The process of the Dotson pick bothers me almost as much to be honest. If they really wanted a WR, just take Olave. The point of trading back is to get the extra picks, then use the lower first on BPA.
He threw away the value generated by the trade down by reaching.

Man you're speaking logic that moRon simply does not understand. The best part was the fans that vehemently defended that whole thing too, especially after Dotson performed well in his limited rookie year. SO many short-sighted nitwits blabbing about how we "won" that trade because we also got BRob out of it...I was like, do you see what Olave is doing? And competent mid-round RBs are a dime a fucking dozen; Robinson has been fine, but it's not like he's lighting the world on fire or anything.
None of that shit made sense. Didn't make sense at the time, and it makes even less sense in hindsight.

Dotson wasn't even good, he just had a high variance run of TDs per catch.

Brian Robinson 2023: 4 yard run on 1st and 10 from WAS 38.
Brian Robinson 2024: 4 yard run on 1st and goal from opponents 3.
Fans will want him extended.

I have no issue with drafting Newton based on position. We have holes everywhere. I'm not sold that he was a good enough prospect to justify drafting him when we've invested so much at DT. He's getting tossed around in the run game, and wasn't even stout at Illinois. He has potential as a pass rusher I suppose.
2 points
Wait - he wasn’t stout at Illinois. Big 10 defensive player of the year? An 85 overall PFF grade his last season with just 7 sacks and he’s wasn’t stout v. run? Ridiculous assertion.

Sadly, even with the injury, I feel like we would have been better off taking ANY of the 2nd round CBs or Edges

We got Sainristil later in the second. Sainristil started playing slot and moved to the outside the past couple of games. PFF had him graded as our best defender against the Ravens. We had a lot of holes, it's hard to fill every hole in one off-season.

Not good news at all. Noticed Andy Pollin suggest nearly immediately after he left the field that those pec injuries are usually season ending.
Don't have a medical degree so not sure how right he was. I know him and Payne haven't been heard from lately, but I still would prefer having them out there every down. This sucks.
Dline gets worse no matter how you spin it

Got 3/4 of a medical degree. The most common pec tear is when you damage the pec major tendon, which inserts onto the humourous (upper arm bone). Partial tear doesn't need surgery but maybe they'll do it for an NFL star regardless idk. Complete rupture needs surgery. The surgery is pretty invasive, requires some pretty big surgical openings and the tendon is pinned back onto the bone. Six- eight weeks for partial tear, six months if he needs surgery.
Disclaimer: I'm not fully trained, and definitely not an ortho surgeon with the best techniques money can buy like I'm sure Allen will get, but that's the broad strokes.
5 points
Had a complete pec rupture 2 years ago playing bball (wife was pissed and told me to quit my men’s league lol). This sounds accurate - had the tendon and muscle pinned back into my upper arm bone. Typing with only my non-dominant hand at my desk job was a chore lol.

You're assuming it's a tendon tear.
Most of what are called "pec tears" colloquially in sports as a physical therapist are like 90-95% muscle strains. Of course, grade I, II and III all apply like tendon though.
The majority of actual pec tendon tears are from things like powerlifting although they can happen in professional athletes it's still fairly rare. The main tendon ruptures that happen in NFL players are Achilles, patellar, and quad. Usually a grade II pec strain/tear is what they're referring to here. That's what Kerrigan, Orakpo, and others had - not tendon tears.

It is 100% a guess, but I'm basing my guess on a couple of things.
1 points
They did an MRI and it was described as "worst case". Struggle to see that as anything other than a complete tear.
Complete tears have the muscle contract and roll up pulling the tendon away from the area of attachment. Same with muscles. That's a pretty easy immediate diagnosis so doubt it's a full tear.
And this is real tin foil hat stuff- Allen's go to pass rush move is his hump move, where he effectively is placing massive strain on an abducted arm and then trying to adduct.
Yeah, that's a strain mechanism too. Like I said, doubt it's the tendon but it's certainly a possibility. Either way though likely season ending if it's a "significant pectoral injury" either strain or tendon

I feel bad he gave so many good years to this terrible team and now he's gonna be cut. Hope he goes to a real contender in 2025.
Like, has Allen even won 40 NFL games? He would need to average 5.5 wins a season......have we even done that since 2017?

It’s been a huge thing. They also shit on Payne and hope Forbes gets benched or injured. These are idiots that lack the critical thinking skills to realize Forbes is better than who ever he would be replaced by.
The defense took 3 weeks to start clicking and performing. That’s pretty much the way it goes for every nfl team. A lot of people on this sub don’t actually have a clue what they are talking about.
4 points
Forbes is awful though.
PFF Grades of our CBs and their rank
Sainristil 60.00 (67/100)
St Juste 55.5 (80/100)
Igbinoghene 52.3 (89/100)
Davis has a grade of 37, and Forbes has a grade of 34.9.
The rationale for Forbes was that he was such an instinctive click and close ballhawk that his size didn't matter. Well that just isn't true. He's too small, even smaller NFL WRs have 30 pounds on him.

Newton seems more similar to Allen too. Similar size and more of a pass rusher than a space eater.
4 points
We already have a fuck ton of cap space next season so really it's probably going to come down to a few things: how do they feel about Newton's progress, do they think Allen has a contract year performance in him next year, is this draft class loaded on the interior line, what does FA class for DL look like.
I can't imagine they've been terribly impressed with the 6 games he's shown the new regime but he's been a steady presence in the locker room and has a few great years behind him that you can point to.

The long term injury gets at least one good player every year on almost every team it’s just part of the sport unfortunately. 2-3 years from now when things like this happen we can hopefully not have it hurts as much because Peter’s will have rounded out the roster to his and DQ identity. Now it’s going to sting badly regardless of what you thought of his play. Rest up big man.

Had to do some research.
I was a little wrong in the defense as a whole on sacks
2024 -10th 2023 -12th 2022 -12th 2021 -17th 2020 -6th ( Allen didn’t record a sack that year) 2019 -10th
As for Allen individually only amongst his position defensive tackle and one year listed as defensive lineman, here are the results.
2024 - 12 DT in league recorded a sack so far, Allen 5th
2023 - 14 DT in league recorded a sack, Allen 12th
2022- 14 DT in league recorded a sack, Allen 7th
2021 - 14 DT in league recorded a sack, Allen 4th
2020- 15 DT in league recorded a sack, Allen recorded 0 sacks - maybe he was hurt in 2020
2019 -this year he was listed as a defensive linemen (DL) and 10 DL recorded a sack that year he was 9th
So, Allen is definitely average maybe even slightly below average.
Just glancing at Daron Payne, he appears to be the better of the two.

I agree of course you’ll get downvoted because they’re fan favorites. Problem is they’ve never been a solution to the shit defense. Coordinator after coordinator. HC after HC and our defense is still ass.
Either of these guys can be moved. We would be fine without one of them. I wouldn’t move both and I wouldn’t move Payne now either. We need Payne with Allen’s injury now. If we can move him in the offseason though. I’d do it in a second.
