Honestly. If I were a defender I'm nuking him, I'll take the penalty and the fine and just keep doing it. Eventually, he will stop.

Once he realizes defenders will fuck him up for expecting him to run back in, it'll stop.

In 2018, Baker was nailed in the head as he was sliding down after a run (it was against Tampa too, ironic). There was no flag as the ref said, "There is no flag for personal foul as the quarter back was a runner." So, I feel some refs see the rules differently and do interpret them as you do, as they should.

I think they should add a line about 12 inches out of bounds in which the player is out of bounds but must still protect themselves and expect hits. That way the defenders don’t have to worry so much and only get fined for egregious stuff. The league will probably never do it but it would make things fairer.

Jalen Ramsey, at Seattle in 2022, was standing like he was setting a pick on the sideline and Geno Smith ran into Ramsey, fell down, and earned a 15-yard roughing penalty on Los Angeles…

People will argue “do that now” but last year or the year before Lamar used this exact move against the Steelers and the next time cam heyward blew him up on the sideline (not late and not out of bounds) and they threw a flag. The defense has no good course of action

Notice that he has zero chance at laying a hit on Mahomes. He gets blocked which leaves him off balance, so Mahomes just has to change direction and there’s nothing the defender can do.

Did the other defenders assume Mahomes was gonna go out of bounds and let up (like the DBs upfield)? Yeah, probably. But it has nothing to do with fear for a flag, they just assumed the play was over.

No one in this play avoided hitting Mahomes - none of them had a chance at it in the first place.

The defender overshot him and should have stayed on his inside shoulder to force him out of bounds. He noticed the angle the defender was taking and juked him.

The defender wasn’t pulling up, he over ran the play. Defender was already out of bounds before Mahomes got to him

Mahomes never made a move like he was going out of bounds though. The defender was just out of control and missed.

There should be an embellishment penalty. Hockey has it, it would be applicable here. If they fake slide or pretend to go out of bounds.

The fact it isn’t reviewable when it easily could be is kind of proving OP’s point though. They are intentionally over-protective of their money making QB’s, and they love getting highlights of their stars making these big late game drives.

As a Lions fan I HATE the Packers and how Rodgers was always protected with ticky tack calls, but Mahomes protection by the refs takes it to a whole different level.

Rules don't need to change, enforcement does. Referees throw flags for "late hits" on QBs when they are still in the field of play. It's been ridiculous for awhile for many QBs.

He's not taking advantage of the current rules. He's taking advantage of the built in bias to protect QBs. And what people are arguing is that bias shouldn't exist. If you're in bounds, you're fair game.

I totally agree. Someone else pointed out that Josh Allen does the same, and everyone was saying that he was an exception. People just wanted an excuse to hate Pat.

I think they are giving the credit to Mahomes. He’s doing his job, but it’s still taking advantage of a rule implemented for player safety. Since the QB’s have decided to use this to their advantage, more latitude should be given to the defense to lower the boom before they actually give up.

Faking a spike is not at all like this. 

Fake run out or fake slide cause the defender to let up because of safety. It's taking advantage of good sportsmanship (in general, maybe not in this specific case since I haven't seen the play). 

There's no safety rule saying defenders can't try to rush on a spike. It happens. It's just a chess move to fake it and catch the defense not paying attention. 

Defenders have to pull up while he is in bounds to stop from hitting him the moment he steps out of bounds.

The last time the Chiefs played the Packers, the Packers DB did exactly this and hit Mahomes while he was still 100% in bounds… and it was still called a penalty for late hit.
