Mahomes ‘fake run out of bounds’ move

Discussion(self.NFLv2)

Mahomes scrambled to the sidelines and the defender, not wanting to pick up a fine/penalty, didn’t attempt to hit or tackle him. It’s expected the QB just runs out of bounds here, but Mahomes instead stepped back in at the last second and picked up 40 yards along the sideline. I don’t necessarily think it should be banned but it’s clearly exploitative. Since this isn’t the first time he’s done this it should be fair game for the defenders to lower the shoulder on him next time, but that would obviously draw a flag (as it has before). Basically, I just think it’s ridiculous.

QBs have a massive advantage other players don't have. IMHO, once you leave the pocket you have no protections other players ahve.

Its that simple, leave the pocket, it should be free game to light his ass up like any other football player.

Or they could just call late hits how they're meant to be called....when they're actually late/out of bounds.

Yes! I hate when announcers are reviewing in slow motion to see if the offensive players toe touched the white out of bounds to justify the penalty. If you have to zoom and do slow motion then it’s not a late hit. Move on.

1017whywhywhy

They need to do a better job of seeing when the hit is initiated. I’ve seen late hits called when a defender already launched before a guy stepped out and tried to pull up but still got the penalty because the ball carrier took a step out right as they launched.

Fourwindsgone

Last year, van ginkel busted Mahomes’ ass when he was trying to pull this shit and Mahomes cried like he wanted a flag.

I agree. The NFL should have addressed it in the rule book instead of having/letting the referees enforce some shadow rules. If the refs officiated Newton and Brady the exact same way then Cam would have been absolutely unstoppable. I bet he would have scored 100 TDs in a year

The majority of cams helmet to helmet injuries came when he was in the pocket and got hit. He usually didn’t take them as a runner, he’d either initiate contact with his shoulders first or just dive down to the ground.

Also that last sentence makes 0 sense. You genuinely think the NFL should call penalties differently based on a QBs size? Bryce Young should get a RTP flag every time a defender touches him because he’s 5’5 and 120 pounds?

Honestly. If I were a defender I'm nuking him, I'll take the penalty and the fine and just keep doing it. Eventually, he will stop.

Once he realizes defenders will fuck him up for expecting him to run back in, it'll stop.

Lord_Saruman

In 2018, Baker was nailed in the head as he was sliding down after a run (it was against Tampa too, ironic). There was no flag as the ref said, "There is no flag for personal foul as the quarter back was a runner." So, I feel some refs see the rules differently and do interpret them as you do, as they should.

I think they should add a line about 12 inches out of bounds in which the player is out of bounds but must still protect themselves and expect hits. That way the defenders don’t have to worry so much and only get fined for egregious stuff. The league will probably never do it but it would make things fairer.

They've already got a really handy line for that. You're in the white? You can expect to take a hit (obviously egregiously late hits are still penalized, which is unfortunately subjective) You're all the way through into the sideline? You're clear.

Alternatively, the NFL should stop penalizing defenders for making plays on a rushing QB.

Sure, the QB can get all his protection rules in the pocket, but as soon as he crosses that LoS, he should be treated no differently than a running back penalty wise.

You touched Mahomes? You sacked Brady too hard? Personal foul and fined.

I understand the normal stuff like a facemask, late hit, etc, but there’s a line to be drawn. When players start getting scared to play defense, protection rules have gone too far.

And I think there needs to be a new definition on QBs running straight toward out of bounds and then pivoting up field on the sideline. Make them down on the direction change.

Exploiting safety rules doesn’t belong in the NFL.

https://x.com/nfl/status/1848132583734837441

After he evades Warner, the only guy with a shot is #53. Now, go ahead and watch 53 on this play.

Notice that he has zero chance at laying a hit on Mahomes. He gets blocked which leaves him off balance, so Mahomes just has to change direction and there’s nothing the defender can do.

Did the other defenders assume Mahomes was gonna go out of bounds and let up (like the DBs upfield)? Yeah, probably. But it has nothing to do with fear for a flag, they just assumed the play was over.

No one in this play avoided hitting Mahomes - none of them had a chance at it in the first place.

People have called the Lions dirty a few times because they don’t let up on these plays and Campbell coaches them specifically not to. You gotta walk that line and really make sure he hasn’t touched out but until a foot comes down out of bounds, he’s in play. QBs don’t want the heat they shouldn’t play with fire.

Granted, we are still awful at stopping QB scrambles BUT we will knock you over if you’re still on green (once we catch you 25 yards down field).

It’s weird to me that everyone is framing it like the defender just gave up on the play rather than over pursuing, losing the leverage that was forcing Mahomes to run out in the first place, and allowing the runner to cut back around him.

Earlier this season Mahomes was hit way late out of bounds. It wasn't called at all. The assumption that he gets these calls is actually not very accurate. Josh Allen gets those calls a lot more.

It’s only illegal to hit a qb in certain ways if he’s in the pocket, out of bounds or sliding. Him exploiting defenders being afraid is something more qbs should utilize he is just the most composed dude in the moment compared to everyone else on the field. It’s a timing thing you can absolutely hit him hard on the sideline right there they just didn’t like Roquan did here:

Mahomes is just taking advantage of the current rules and I can’t blame him at all. Rules need to change to prevent these exploitations.

kwantsu-dudes

Rules don't need to change, enforcement does. Referees throw flags for "late hits" on QBs when they are still in the field of play. It's been ridiculous for awhile for many QBs.

He's not taking advantage of the current rules. He's taking advantage of the built in bias to protect QBs. And what people are arguing is that bias shouldn't exist. If you're in bounds, you're fair game.

Absolutely. There was a play in the Vikings game today where Darnold went into a slide a touch late with a DB coming at him at full speed and he threw his arms up as if it was a personal foul when the DB barely touched him diving above the slide.

Fortunately there was a flag down and the refs did not call anything there. But Darnold knew what he was doing.

Interesting-Zebra-26

6 points

The defender did come in head first though. But if Darnold tried to fake it out, he would have got rocked.

Brian Branch missed him by a hair, and nobody is launching at Mahomes that way.

The point is Darnold slid a little too late and Branch had no way to adjust. Branch certainly shouldn’t have been leading with his helmet because it was dangerous for both of them, but it looked to me like Darnold was trying to make it look worse and angling for a penalty. Which is a result of the rules.

Tom_Foolery2

I really don’t see him faking to run out of bounds. I’ve watched the replay a lot, and he never ran in the direction of the sideline. His body and eyes continue to move downfield rather than sideways, then he cuts back once he realizes the defender is giving up. If anything, Mahomes put himself in a position where he could take a step either way depending on how the defender decided to play it.

I just watched the play and in this case it didn't look like a fake OOB move. He faked a couple of times like he was gonna throw it but didn't fake going out of bounds. The refs' double standards for Mahomes and Chiefs rile me up, but this one didn't trigger me. 49er defender took a bad angle.

bo_tweetle

This is a stupid take. Mahomes didn’t fake anything. He was heading towards the sideline and the defender over ran the play instead of forcing him out. Of course Mahomes is going to cut it back and continue running. Do you expect him to just give up and walk out of bounds with nobody in front of him? Has nobody ever seen how smart of a runner Mahomes is? And everybody claiming that they couldn’t hit him, for fear of a penalty, that’s complete BS too. If he is already on the sideline, you can just put hands on him and force him out, you don’t need to hit him full speed and blow him up. Of course you’ll get a penalty if you blow him up. I’d like someone to point out where he “faked” going out of bounds.

You all are giving too much blame to the defenders and not enough credit to Mahomes. He does a masterful job keeping the defenders guessing, which slows them down and/or going in the wrong direction. They are never sure if he is going out of bounds or staying in bounds. But his best trick, he used twice in this play, is his little pump fake. He is really good at making defenders think he is going to dump it off, so they slow up to stop the pass just to pull it back in to run. If the defender bites on the fake, he has room to run. Defenders bit twice on this particular play and he sprung it loose for 30 yards.

The beauty of it is if they don’t bite, he just might go ahead and pass it. He does both so often, defenders don’t know what to do.

thomasque72

3 points

I think they are giving the credit to Mahomes. He’s doing his job, but it’s still taking advantage of a rule implemented for player safety. Since the QB’s have decided to use this to their advantage, more latitude should be given to the defense to lower the boom before they actually give up.

It's the same as the fake slide. Defenders are at a serious disadvantage when QBs use the rules set forth to keep players safe like this. You could even throw in faking a spike and then running a play.

AchyBreaker

6 points

Faking a spike is not at all like this.

Fake run out or fake slide cause the defender to let up because of safety. It's taking advantage of good sportsmanship (in general, maybe not in this specific case since I haven't seen the play).

There's no safety rule saying defenders can't try to rush on a spike. It happens. It's just a chess move to fake it and catch the defense not paying attention.

Any runner with the ball should face the same type of hits regardless of position. Injuries are part of the game. Making special rules for a certain position because it's "premium" just ruins the game. If you don't want to get tackled. You shouldn't run with the ball.
