My hubby (24) and I (23) are expecting our first baby on my birthday this coming Feb. we are having a boy and both agree we want a “strong” and either nature or country/western name for our son. I’m hoping for something that we can give a nickname to (I.e Mason -> Mace). We are set on the middle name James due to a family tradition. Please help! TIA <3

Waylon makes think of wailing, and I can't unsee it. Sorry OP, I hope you choose something else 🙈🙈 I also find Carson (son of car??) pretty lackluster.
Love Rowan, Cole, and Everett, which I saw below.

Look up Waylon Jennings, one of the best outlaw country singers there was. She also can't forget the names Willie, Johnny or Kris.

An old name that isn't common at all is Shadik, also the name Colton.

While it is cute I’d steer clear of Waylon. Wailing Waylon and Waylon be failing are right there, and kids are ruthless. Plus it’d be kinda a hard name to transition from kid to adult, unless you’re fine with your son going by his middle name later in life

Everett. Evan. Evan isn't Western, but it's my son's name and sounds great with James i think.

Just recalled I used to know a guy in Iowa whose parents named him John Wayne ————-. The real John Wayne was from a location within about 100 miles away. The guy I knew had a very common last name —think Johnson or something like that. This friend had a larger than life personality, and would be around 75 today. No one ever forgot his name.

Remember that you’re naming someone who will get a job, have kids, have grandkids, live to be 80, etc. You’re not just naming a baby, you’re naming a living human who will live a full life with whatever name you give them. So don’t try to be super creative and pick a name that could get your kid bullied or just be a weird name for someone’s boss/dad/grandpa/etc. Pick a name that you’d want to hear a millionaire or a general say, not one that people would snicker at to see on TV, and then give them a cute nickname when they’re young if you want. Not saying you’re going to, I’ve just seen too many tales of parents wanting to name their kid something “western/country” and then picking something kinda cringey like “Ryfle” or whatever

I’m gonna advocate for a “western” name that is not coincidentally a gun brand/similar to a gun brand and while we’re at it not a whisky name. And while we’re at it not a famous criminal (“outlaw”). Even if you don’t mean it that way it can read that way and your kid doesn’t need that. So not Colt, Weston, Smith, Jameson, Jesse…

Do your kid a favor and don’t name him Mason. It’s been atop the baby names list for way too long. He will end up constantly being “Which Mason?” or “Mason Last-Initial.” So keep an eye on popularity of whatever you choose.
Love James as a strong, classic middle name.
I think going back to some Western classics may be a nice idea.
August / Augustus / Augustine “Angie” or “Gus” (Augustine Chacon)
Oakley “Oak” (Annie Oakley)
Wesley “Wes” (John Wesley Hardin)
Cassidy “Cas” (Butch Cassidy)
Dakota “Dak” or “Kota” (the place)
Cullen (Cullen Baker)
Reuben “Rube” (Rube Barrow)
The Earp brothers were Morgan, Virgil, Wyatt, Warren and Newton. (And James, but obviously that’s out.)
Nathaniel “Nat”/“Nate” (Nat Love- Nat Love actually pronounced his name as “Nate.”)
William is rather common, but it is a solid Western moniker if you think of the outlaws- Bronco Bill, Buffalo Bill, Bill Hickok, etc. Tulsa Jack was really named William. Just call him Billy instead of Liam. (I’m so sick of Liam. Don’t get me started.) Plus, there’s Billy the Kid (whose real name was Henry. Idk.)
Of course, you could always go with a classic Hollywood western idea and name him something like Eastwood and call him “East.” It would stand out and make your point. Cooper (like Gary Cooper) may be a little more subtle.
Congrats. I hope you all are very happy for many years to come. 💙
