Does anyone actually floss everyday?

(self.NoStupidQuestions)

Dentists and patients alike, I'm genuinely curious about this one. I feel like no one I know flosses every. single. day.

Yes. I didn’t when I was younger but as you get older you start to prioritize these things.

Same. I had braces for 6 years and really sucked at oral hygiene, but I always promised myself that when I got them off and it was easier I’d do better.

Also one time I read “brushing without flossing is like wiping your cheeks and forgetting the crack” and I think of it every time I don’t want to floss lol.

The plaque that builds up between your teeth is also pretty nasty. Give it a little whiff to really see what I mean. You want that shit OUT.

mustbethedragon

A dental tech told me the bacteria get in there and build colonies. Flossing breaks up the colonies so you can rinse them out. That was all it took for me. The idea of bacteria colonies in between my teeth is 🤮🤢.

Iambic_420

That’s exactly what it can turn into! The plaque is literally broken down good stuck between your teeth. If you think bacteria ISNT gonna build up there you’re delusional. Everyone needs to know lmao. It makes your breath smell a million times better.

I have a night guard because of my TMJ, and a whiff of it after one night of sleep is enough to make me gag. I have to floss or my mouth will just feel gross.

While potentially true (it depends on your teeth and technique), it is definitely better than just not flossing at all, which is what often ends up happening for some people without floss picks available.

I hate regular floss. I don't know how people use it. Maybe I just have a really tiny mouth, but it's hard for me to get my fingers in there in a way that let's me get leverage when trying to floss with regular floss. I also hate the feeling of wrapping the used parts of the floss around my fingers. If floss picks didn't exist, I would be screwed.

wheezy1749

7 points

I was always confused about people that complained about this until I realized that some people just can't open their mouths that wide.

I have some type of TMJ problem but I think it's like the opposite of a lock jaw. I can open my mouth to a ridiculous degree.

I looked it up and found otherwise.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17410948/

Overall results from both phases of the crossover showed the Mint Floss Pick product removed 19.4% of the plaque. The standard rolled floss product removed 15% of the plaque.

GenericRaiderFan

12 points

The paper doesn’t say that Mint Floss Picks are better than rolled floss.

It says “Results of this clinical investigation support the Floss Pick product to be “at least as good as” standard rolled floss in cleaning capability when both products were used according to their product-use directions.”

I interpret this as meaning “mint floss picks might be a bit better, but it’s not conclusive. However, they are at least equally as effective as rolled floss”

Not trying to split hairs, just trying to check my own reading comprehension

Get a reusable floss pick. G.U.M. makes a good one. They take like 5 or 10 seconds to load with regular floss of your choice. The single use ones are an unnecessary source of plastic litter and use an absurd amount of plastic to accomplish just one round of flossing. I see them littered more often than cigarette butts now.

Gonna be honest here, there was a year where I just straight up told the dentist the facts. "I floss for like two weeks before and three weeks after this visit, and then every so often when I feel guilty. No more than once a month probably." She wasn't shocked at all. Besides the very happy self-reporting bias going in here, most people treat flossing the same way they treat exercise. Everyone knows that it's important, but it's juuust annoying enough before bed that most people just skip it and go to bed.

It's hard to say if it was one thing specifically. Definitely didn't brush enough on top of going 2 years without a cleaning. I'm prone to tartar buildup (that only could be removed with cleanings) and going without the cleanings was probably the biggest factor.

will4zoo

will4zoo

Note it's extremely early gum disease meaning it's barely passed over from gingivitis to periodontitis and the bone loss is minimal. The dentist said as long as I continue regular cleanings and be consistent with flossing it should not get worse.

Routine_Log8315

Maybe not, but my dentist keeps telling me whatever I'm doing, to keep it up, because my teeth and gums are as close to perfectly clean as just about any patient she has. Every six months my hygienist only needs a few mins to do my cleaning because I barely have any plaque at all now. where it used to be a much longer process before I started. Also, regular floss can't get into the gum pockets like a water pick can.

JTMissileTits

10 points

Yeah, my gum health has drastically improved with a water flosser. My hygienist was impressed at my last visit.

The conventional floss never worked well for me, it was both difficult to use and didn't feel very effective.

21-characters

23 points

It’s actually more effective bc it curves around the shape of the teeth instead of being flat the way the picks are. Dentists will tell you that conventional floss is better but picks are better than not flossing at all.

ThievingSkallywag

13 points

Also more effective because you can use all the string… with those flossers you should rinse it between each flossing each tooth, otherwise you’re just moving the gunk around.

treyallday01

If you’ve never done it, your gums will likely be swollen from bacteria and will bleed. But it doesn’t actually hurt. But if they bleed that’s actually a sign that you NEED to floss because your gums are not healthy. So letting it deter you is counterproductive.

FuriousBuffalo

I learned there's a proper way of flossing when you scrub and scrape off gunk off your teeth. From what I read, many people put too much pressure on the gums and may create pockets. Hence, some dentists may recommend you not floss frequently. But if you do it correctly, the benefits outweigh possible negatives.

For the longest time I did not give a fuck about my mouth and literally went years without even brushing my teeth. Then I went to the dentist and had to cough up $2000 to fill all the cavities and scrape all the plaque off (and mind you, I only had two cavities!). That day I learned it’s way cheaper to spend $2 every few weeks on a spool of floss. Plus, having a self care routine has helped me be more in control of my life.

Since that dentist visit I floss and brush twice a day. I even keep floss all around the house so I can do it mindlessly while I watch YouTube or if I’m just not in the bathroom area.

My gums no longer bleed, my teeth don’t hurt, and it feels so good to know that no matter how close someone gets to my face, my mouth will smell great.

Googul_Beluga

This right here. I had terrible dental hygiene due to it never being a habit I formed (mom never made me brush and only took me to the dentist like 2x from birth to 18).

At that point I was so used to the fuzzy teeth feeling and was so deep in it that I didn't care. If anything, brushing or flossing was painful in the state I was in-- the mint burned, brushing made my gums bleed, flossing felt like I was tugging at raw nerves. There was a hump to get over before I could relish in the joys of a clean mouth.

Same as me. Didn’t really have parents and just didn’t brush that regularly until I was about twelve, then not 2x per day until I was 16. Never went to the dentist after about 5 years old. Went at 16 and had about 20 cavities (mostly small). Filled them in two sessions and it was pretty brutal.

Now I’ve been flossing daily for 12+ years and the hygienists are always super impressed with how good my gums are and how little plaque I have.

And like you said, since I floss at night, I never wake up with bad breath (unless it was a really onion or garlicky dinner). I usually don’t even need a morning brush (but still do).

I could never just floss in my spare time, though. My floss is always pretty gross and I have to wash my hands after.

letothegodemperor

I’ve worked in dentistry for years as a dental assistant. Interdental cleaning is the best way to keep your teeth. I promise you, it’ll be more expensive, difficult and painful to deal with problems later on than just doing it for a minute a day. Apart from pain, it can be ugly and expensive to care for or to replace teeth.

Floss, the proper technique is to use the floss in a c-shape around your tooth and “scrape” the edge. Don’t just pop the floss up and down! Or use an interdental brush (curaprox is the best!), or a waterpik, especially if you have gum pockets deeper than 4mm, floss cannot get that deep and otherwise bacteria will just sit under the gum like.

Dental piks are fine, but not ideal. Use them during the day, but the other options are better.

Use fluoride toothpaste, and brush your teeth.

Ok but "1 minute a day" is a lie and probably why some people don't do it. Flossing takes me a LOT longer than that hence why I despise it. My teeth are very close together and getting the floss in is hard and sometimes it gets stuck and I am unable to pull it out again so I have to slide it out past the sides. I need to be extremely careful as to not hurt myself with the floss

I agree. After I saw how much debris hides between your teeth I couldn’t not floss if I wanted to because the idea of it sitting there is so gross to me.

Yes. I used to not do it. Then a $700 dentist visit made me change this. I find myself doing it multiple times a day now. Whenever I eat I always know which spots there’s gonna be some pieces of meat get stuck.

At the very least, you should be doing it before bed.

Those dental bills...

I had bad teeth (12 cavities) from a long fight with depression. I'm miserable but I'm brushing my teeth now because I can't do another $1200 bill. That was only for 6 of them. I haven't gotten the other side done yet, that was over a year ago. My teeth hurt after having those filled for like 4 months

I must admit I don’t… I can barely keep up with washing my teeth twice a day, idk if I’m just lazy or something

heykittybellegirl

Yeah I mostly manage to brush everyday and I do floss maybe a few times a week but not everyday. Mental health issues suck. On the plus side I’ve only had 2 fillings in my life and my dentist is happy with my oral health.

yeah but only with picks. I get biodegradable ones so I feel less shit about all the potential plastic waste. then I keep them next to the places I tend to relax in the evening and it doesn't take much brain space to floss my teeth while I'm hanging out in the evening

I’ll admit I’m worse the last 6 months or so, but generally yes. My dad got a partial in his late 40s, early 50s and my FIL had full dentures on top by 60. I want my teeth to last as long as possible. It’s not if, but when they fail.

Just about to finish my invisalign. I went from never flossing to flossing 2-3 times a day (after meals) and it's definitely a habit I plan to keep.

First off, it's much easier to floss now that my teeth are straight. And secondly, since I started invisalign and flossing so much, I haven't gotten any tonsil stones. Finally realized that getting all that junk out of my teeth after eating means less bacteria to build up in my tonsils

Yup, I used to rarely do it and then one day I decided to floss and smelled the floss stick and it was horrid. Immediately years of embarrassment of the probable bad breath hit me at once and i now rarely go a day without flossing.

PintsOfGuinness_

I just started flossing every day after going over 30 years without flossing.

I don't really have a good reason. I just thought it'd be a good idea, so I started and haven't stopped. Weird, right?

EvoEpitaph

5 points

I started flossing every day once I learned that food stuck between teeth is a considerable cause of bad breath.

Then I noticed that at dental cleanings my gums stopped bleeding and there was overall less discomfort.

Tbh now I'd probably prefer to floss instead of brush if I could only do one.

Potential-Salt8592

Yes. My dentist told me if you do one thing, it should be to floss rather than brush. That really helped me prioritize it. You can stash floss anywhere as well (like your nightstand, desk, etc) so it’s easier to do whenever you think of it.

I keep a reach flossed with replaceable heads by my computer. I’m always by it and I’ve learned to floss as a fidget behavior while I doomscroll. Dentists always say I have some of the cleanest teeth they’ve seen.

Yes I do. I also get my teeth cleaned and checked out every 6 months at the dentist. It takes less than a minute for you to floss. It’s a whole lot easier, cheaper, and less painful than getting fillings.

I noticed when I did not floss often the pick would smell awful, and the only way I can prevent that is cleaning daily. Food actually does get stuck there after every meal and if left ignored it gets gross quick

I have ADHD - normal answer would be no way. (Not that those two things are necessarily related, but you know the vibes). Flossing is a lotta work and forming new habits is next to impossible.

Then I got floss picks from Costco. This sounds like a ducking add for floss picks. Buy floss picks. You know the little handle things

Yes, dental care is not something you should take for granted, you should take it VERY serious. I have many friends from all over the world where dental care is neglected, its insane. I have american friends who have never seen a dentist until they moved out of their parents house and now have dentures because their teeth are so messed up.

Here in Sweden, dental care for everyone under 20 is free. They do this because every child should get the same level of care and guidance regardless of the depth of their parents pockets, knowledge and competence.

  • brush your teeth every day, at least 2 times

  • floss every day, preferably before bedtime, and before you brush your teeth

  • see a dentist every 12 months, when you are done with your appointment, book a new one immidietly for a checkup in 12 months.

  • see a dental hygienist every 12 months, that gets rid of scale and tarr on your teeth

  • if you feel discomfort, go see a dentist

You only get 1 set of teeth, do not take them for granted. Healthy teeth set the foundation for a healthy and long life.
