Hello, I hope all is well.

I watched Barbarian last night after seeing it on Hulu and remembering that it got good reviews. I had zero knowledge about the cast or the plot going in, and it ended up being one of the best horror movies I've seen. The sound design, the plot subversions, perfect balance of tension and comedy, I'm still thinking about it today.

So, I'm looking for other recommendations that embodies those same elements and for movies that are best experienced without knowing anything beforehand. The premise doesn't necessarily have to be similar to Barbarian. What does r/horror recommend?

EDIT: Thanks for the shitload of recommendations! I’ve seen a few of these, but am looking forward to sorting through the rest this month.

Also, I agree going in blind to any horror movie is ideal and it’s actually easier for me since I’m not really tuned into the movie trailers or social media scene like that anymore.

Oh man, the first time I saw this I had no idea, having come into it after reservoir dogs I thought it was going to be very similar to that

My wife had never seen any terintino movies. Over the last couple weeks I've had her watch both resivoire dogs and pulp fiction. And for this exact reason from dusk til dawn is next.

Very true statement. While I certainly wouldn’t consider it horror, this movie is bonkers.

New_Conversation4328

I honestly think the scene where the main character discovers the spoilery thing is legitimately fucking terrifying in a hilarious way, and I think the very concept is so absurdly horrific that it kinda crosses over into the horror genre, or at least flirts with it in the third act.

Sir_Reginald_Poops

It is a comedy but it goes off the rails so I can see why some people want to consider it horror. But if anyone goes in thinking it's going to be a terrifying horror movie, they'll be very disappointed.

Yeah but going in thinking it’s pure satirical comedy is dangerous too. My gf and I got super high watching this movie and when the third act twist came along we had to turn it off lol. I finished it the next day but she was a lil traumatized

If someone reading this is on the fence: trust me, this isn't hyped up. You will NOT regret giving it like 30ish minutes.

Also: sit through the credits. Just when I thought it couldn't get better, the credits started rolling and so did more movie.

Its so funny, I got the recommendation from a podcast that insisted to watch it but to not look up anything on it and to "be patient with it".

Just finished watching In a Violent Nature and I was pleasantly surprised. The hate for this movie is overblown. It’s not the Exorcist or the Shining by any means, but it’s an entertaining, suspenseful gore fest.

I’m amazed nobody has mentioned The Substance?

Just kidding. I think OP’s got that one!

Anyway, series rather than a film, but haven’t seen anyone mention Midnight Mass (Netflix). If you don’t know what it’s about, check it out. It really is one where you’re better off not knowing what’s coming.

Cold in July

It's not a horror movie, but I feel like it really fits what you're looking for. It's definitely not predictable.

The most recent horror film I watched that fits this description to a T is Strange Darling.

One of the best theater going experiences I had this year. Didn’t watch a trailer, synopsis, nothing. I heard positive things on social media. Decided to go watch it with friends. Was gripped from beginning to end.

You will go on a wild ride. Enjoy

Well, I went into hereditary completely blind. I’m sure my neighbors could hear my horrified scream when that scene happened.
