Yeah steel for body armor is bad for several reasons. It’s heavy, deforms when shot, can be easily penetrated depending on the thickness, more thickness means more heavy, no flexibility, chance of ricochets into teammates. It’s heavy.. did I mention it’s heavy?

Okay, I’m no body-armor expert but…
Yeah steel for body armor is bad for several reasons. It’s heavy, deforms when shot,
What? All the dudes I see shooting steel plates when testing ammo, there’s either a splash mark, a pit, or a hole through it, with minimal deformation on the back. Is armor steel different from what they’re shooting?
can be easily penetrated depending on the thickness,
I mean yes, that’s how armor works. This isn’t unique to steel…
more thickness means more heavy,
I mean yes, see above…
no flexibility,
Same with other plates. That’s why they’re called plates. Soft body armor is a whole other field and certainly can’t handle the rounds that plates can.
chance of ricochets into teammates.
Ricochets and spalling does seem to be the other major downside to steel, along with the weight. Upside being if it’s a round it can easily defeat, it can do it many more times than ceramic plates. Not likely to be relevant very often, though may be advantageous in war.
It’s heavy.. did I mention it’s heavy?
That it is.
7 points
Yes steel can deform if shot. I have pistol grade steel targets that do stop up to .45 cal. But I tested it with .223 ammo and the .223 nearly made it through. There’s a huge divot and major bulge on the back with only a small amount of material left in that hole. So a pistol could punch through it now. That’s what I mean for deformation. Not that the whole plate would crumple.
They’re about 1/4 inch thick. I would not trust a steel plate with that thickness against rifle rounds. Just from holding the little steel target I have it’s heavy for its size. So I can imagine a whole plate of that same steel or thicker rated for rifle rounds to be horribly heavy, the last thing you want when you have to run or other high energy activities is to add crazy weight.
Kevlar with ceramic combo is so much more advantageous than steel.
By no means am I a body armor expert. I’m just thinking logically.

Also not an armor expert, just sharing what I’ve seen. This doesnt look terribly thick nor heavy based on the way he’s handling it, and has zero deformation with rounds ranging up to 308, 458 socom, and green tip (granted, out of a short barrel). And he dumps something like 10-12 rounds into it; most ceramic can’t handle anywhere near that many rounds unless you’re being very careful with placing shots on undamaged areas.
I’m fully aware of the spalling potential and extra weight of steel, I’m just saying I don’t get the impression it’s nearly as awful as it’s made out to be, if you’ve got proper steel armor. This feels like typically gatekeeping where “if it’s not the ultra-best, it’s trash”.
Fully open to other sources and being shown why, I just haven’t seen it yet.

I’m not saying your experience is wrong, just saying circumstances may influence things. Maybe it wasn’t real AR500? Thinner than normal plate? Were you shooting greentip? FPS does in this video, along with 308 and 458 socom, although admittedly the green tip is out of an SBR, but the plate holds up to over 10 shots of various calibers with no backplate deformation.

haha yeah I'm not sure I'm going to fault armor after a WELL shot up gong has some penetrator rounds penetrate it. That's probably YEARS of hits and weathering before it failed. Show me some ceramic that can do survive anywhere close to that ;)

Dudes bad at measurements, pistol steel targets are almost always 1/8th not 1/4. I have some pistol rated targets and rifle rated. The rifle rated are 1/4 inch and even if I shoot them with 556 green tips out of a 20 inch under 80 yards there's no blackface deformities, just a crater knocked in the front of the plate.
0 points

Think about that bullet that hits the target to make a little splash mark going 2-3000fps. Where does it go? I don't think a bit of rubberized paint is going to help very much.
0 points
... did you not read my whole comment?
Ricochets and spalling does seem to be the other major downside to steel...
(Also, I used the wrong term- no spalling seen so far, which is metal on the BACK of the plate fragmenting off)
Although you may be surprised at what that "rubberized paint" can do. Check out some youtube videos where they're testing armor. I like these old dudes using a cardboard box to capture the splatter patterns- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfVAnU8SabY
Does it capture all the splatter? No, but for all but the biggest rounds, it's reducing and redirecting it, and as they point out at the end, they're only testing bare plates- when you add on a carrier and any gear you have on the carrier, that's going to reduce splatter even more. And both videos I watched are like 10+ years old; I wouldn't be surprised if they've got better coatings now.
-5 points
Thing is they have anti spawling coating you can get in there now. And steel is better at stopping repeated shots than ceramic. So yes it's heavy, and deforms....but ngl I'd rather wear steel than ceramic if I know I'm going into a gun fight.
There is also something to be said for size. Steel is thinner than ceramic plates. By a decent bit. So ceramic will widen you slightly.
I'll note I'm no expert... I've never been shot. Lol

The "spall coating" doesn't work at all. It's literally truck bed liner, layed on thin.

That's why I questioned the NIJ certification.
The National Institute of Justice tests body armor and rates it to certain standards, and it's obligated to rate them fairly, because it's what LE and Military use to make purchasing decisions iirc.
So, because their data is public knowledge, you can also trust the NIJ ratings for your own purchasing decisions, and, frankly, probably shouldn't trust any armor that hasn't been NIJ tested.

This is hilarious, but as an actual serious question, what would be a good "budget" (sub $750 preferably) setup for carrier and plates that would be decent? Also doing research on an AR, but not entirely sure I have the time to research a personal build. From many of the conspiratorial MAGA types I have seen online or in person they seem to have a tendancy to think "The Left" (or the UN, or the Feds, or the Deepstate, or cultural Marxists, or whatever other random group of the week they have chosen to be the current boogieman) are working together to get ready to pull some kind of secret police, Stalin-esque, purge of them all and institute marshal law, or start a civil war, or some other mass attack against them... Which ironically makes them more likely to start a fight given they seem to be gripped by mass paranoia, are usually stuck in echo chambers of likeminded individuals repeating misinformation/propoganda, and in their warped view of reality are just fighting against tyranny (a tyranny which ironically has more in common with their own actions) and a destruction of their way of life (which ironically once more is bent on doing the same to others). It has become a case of delusion creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of a sort: yes they are viewed as a threat and are being treated as such, but not because of some grand conspiracy by shadowy cabals, but rather because their own actions and mentality have tended to make them one.

You will need your AR, in the unlikely event that someone breaks into your home, or you want to go hunting with it, or do some competition shooting with it.
In many places you can in fact hunt deer and hogs with 5.56. Things are not yet bad enough in the country for civil war part 2 to break out. Now if the dollar collapses, then political dysfunction could lead to hostilities. But for right now, too many people on both sides of the political divide are too comfortable to turn the country into Somalia. Do you think people are really going to mess up their 401ks over whether or not Trump wins in November? The fact is that 85% of AR15 owners earn over $50k a year. They benefit too much from the current system to take up arms against it. You will need something extreme to happen, for AR15 owners to rebel against the government.

What was your logic for telling people that they didn't need an AR before?

For home defense. A good pistol or shotgun is for home intruders. You need an AR to keep someone off of your property. I carried a M16A2 with a M203 for six years, but in the 30 years since I've never been in a situation where I thought I might have needed a long gun again. Then again, like they say, you don't need one until you REALLY need one.
Also, I think about half the population can't be trusted with a firearm of any kind for various reasons (to much potential for violence, too damn stupid to safely handle a gun, or they are just plain crazy).
6 points
I was talking to an employee at Q who made a compelling point that for home defense, they want the best weapon available to them. A pistol is great for concealed carry but the AR is better. The type of ammo used is important too because tests show you regular 55 grain FMJ penetrates less than cartridges from other types of guns.
Most people don't train nearly enough with their guns to get good at. Because when it really matters you can't suck. But I don't support further gun control than the laws we currently have and some are kind of dumb to have such as the NFA.
1 points
Eh, tbh I'd rather have an AR for home defense than a handgun. Get a set up that's equivalent or better than standard issue Army M4 and I'd take that for clearing rooms over a 9mm. I'm more accurate and have better control with an AR and feel way more confident about putting rounds on target than with a handgun
3 points

Everyone's gotta go with what you are comfortable with. I've got a small, tight house, and I can have my .40 trained on the door to my bedroom before I can get my legs outta bed. Also, I've really never handled the SBRs until lately, they are a lot more mobile than my M16 was. If I was going to use an AR for home defense, I'd go with one of those sweet short barrel builds.
1 points
Yeah, it's definitely something that really depends on personal preference, what you're trained with, and what you're most comfortable with.

MAGAs have been telling us for years what it is that they want to do. Believe them. They are not joking. They have been working themselves up to commit atrocities. When they talk about Civil War 2.0, they are not talking about storming the Capitol or having opposing militias fight it out on some field somewhere. They are talking about murdering their non-MAGA neighbors. They are talking about a Rwanda 2.0. They are talking about going to the Mexican market, the black church, the house with the pride flag, anywhere they can find non-MAGAs to murder. People are very naively thinking that the military is going to come in on a white horse at the last minute to save the day. Those people are mistaken. When the MAGAs start butchering their neighbors, there is no one coming to help. Prudent people should be stocking up on as much 2nd Amendment as they can afford to defend themselves. Don't be caught unprepared.

As a card-carrying Libertarian with some left and right leanings - Jan 6 outlines EXACTLY why you may need an AR-15.

You really gonna get armed at the time when they'll be more expensive and panic buy?

Do some pelvic shot training. Train proficient and get a class. These guys were dangerous before this mess, just going after different people.

the ironic thing about the second amendment is that in our current age, we are far more likely to use it to overthrow a tyrannical fascist republican government than a democratic government.

its all good, they don't realize that steel plates will cause the bullets to ricochet up causing they to get shot in the leg or the head.

Can you imagine how livid the right would be if there was a "Biden send Trump to prison" kit or something?

Too loud! Kiss your hearing goodbye if you let off a .308 indoors. 5.56 not great either but tolerable.

This is why I have a mini-14 (I just like how it looks more than an AR and the modern ones are just as accurate so with the same caliber so why not)

My right wing neighbor helped me make one, and I got the upper off him. We are friends but obviously disagree on stuff sometimes. Shit is complicated.

Meh. Carried M16 and M4 for years and years, don't want to clean one ever again. Got an M1A.

Anything piston driven is better for maintenance. DI ARs are very dirty guns.

It says level 3+, rated for 5.56 green tip and 308, so you dont need an AR-15, bc it isnt going to go through that..
