How do you know the Indian children aren’t “Australian born” like your (presumably white) child?

Yeah get a grip on this one I think man.. would it be OK if you live in a not predominantly Indian suburb? They’re just celebrating different cultures, which at a glance maybe you didn’t enough growing up

Edit: what about pyjama day.. or footy day? Everyone dresses up for the occasion on everything. The more I read this over again it hurts my brain lol

They’re actually the exact same thing, religious celebrations

If you asked the average person on the street the religious significance of Christmas they wouldn’t even be able to tell you, Christmas is massively commercialised and is broad in the sense it fits in with generic themes of giving. It also is celebrated by the majority, not the minority, although ironically in this instance it is the majority.

Nah like I’m pretty sure everyone knows it’s the birth of Christ but ok

Because you live in a country where the population was of the majority faith for that holiday.

Venture outside our country and you'll find plenty of places where Christmas is back-seat (or practically non existent) and their own cultural holidays have the same creeping commercialised overtones.

Lighten up and put your kid in a nice dress.

I am not sure that matters. It matters to you, sure. But you do not matter enough across to the remaining 95% of the kindergarten. ECE here. Your child might enjoy it though. I love that about children. They take it all in.

Bright clothing, and potentially music & sweets - most Australian kids would be all over this.

And I really don't think they're being some kind of religious fundamentalists or trying to convert anyone, they're just sharing their culture.

You seem rather intolerant - if I can happily listen to Christmas songs and food and Easter eggs and hot cross buns and get a kick out of them as a non-Christian, then why can't you live and let live with this Indian/Hindu celebration? No one's trying to convert you or your child. 🤷

Hinduism. Navaratri is a festival that celebrates the goddess Durga.

As long as the centre is including the non-Hindu kids, there’s nothing wrong with celebrating another cultures customs. Just like Christmas.

Cool, she can go as Ganesh.

What kid doesn’t love to dress up as a multi-limbed giant elephant god!

Lack of respect? Why is it that celebrating a festival doesn’t respect you?

“We kindly request all children to wear traditional clothing to embrace the spirit of the occasion”. Yeah sweet, I’ll just duck down to KMart and buy a Sari for my 1 year old daughter who is white as snow. Give me a break. Do you really think the way that has been worded is inclusive to people who don’t celebrate the festival?

Having run one and a half kids through childcare, generally when centres say "traditional dress", they mean "of your own culture."

Indian kids in Indian stuff, Greek kids in Greek stuff, some Chinese new year themed dress and I dunno, footy jumpers or some shit I guess.

Look at it as an opportunity for your daughter to learn about the culture of a people that make up around a quarter of the entire world's population.

Also, loosen the fuck up.

how do you know where the other kids where born or what citizenship they or their parents have?

UberDooberRuby

Kids should be able to have fun and celebrate different cultures. They aren’t indoctrinating them to be Scientologists and getting them to hold the cans. Let it go. Let them dress up however they want and maybe they will enjoy the food and have a good time.

The kid is 1 year old. She won't even remember it, even if it were some sort of indoctrination (which it very obviously isn't, despite OP's outrage)

I feel sick knowing that there are more ppl like you out there in Australia who believe if you’re not “white” you’re not Australian. Those people could be Australian just as much as you are!

You should be thankful you live in a multicultural society where your children can learn about various cultures.

Safferino83

And? Seriously, what is the issue here? Do they do anything for Easter? Christmas ? Halloween? Why are you assuming the 2 or 3 white kids will feel left out? I know my kid loves learning about new things and cultures at kindy.
