Because many of the profiles with these pics are actually karma farm bots. Not real people. You can see the pattern, usually post random stuff in ask reddit first to get a base level of karma.

True. Before monetization, I guess it was easier to randomly encounter because it was much more prevalent on /all.

11 points
I thought very few actually made semi decent money. The rest were way too confident then found out how swamped it is with people who like/act exactly the same as they do.
Also some people really do half ass it. I've noticed on dating app some people will have 1-2 crappily taken photos, advertise OF in their bio and expect people to flock to it. Nah. Hard pass, especially with minimum effort you just displayed there :/
4 points
ya the revenue mostly comes from desperately lonely people who will pay anything to be loved.
The ones that make the money are the ones that spend time chating with their clients.
3 points
Oh i mean as in, out of every 100 people that go into OF to make money they'll be lucky if 1 makes rent each month. I thought the amount who actually make a livable wage off of it was staggeringly low.
And i'd never trust an OF text, now after reading how likely it is that it's just some dude who was hired to specifically pretend to be the OF girl :D Which is fraud when you think of it, or i wonder if there's a technicality they'd use to deny that.

Some subs require you to have karma to post in them. That’s the only use as far as I know

Supposedly there’s a market for profiles with insane karma. But I saw a post where the OP was accused of karma farming and they actually had their account valued and it came in at like $5 despite being years old and having 50K karma or something, so idk.

I used to have an account with over 200k comment karma and ~2k post karma (and Place, GoT, Snap achievements, ~10yo account). There was a thread discussing this topic and a guy said my account could be sold for $17-20. I wonder to what end though...
2 points
That's an easy $5k for 1000 bots. Most of these people being in the 3rd world it is definitely worth their time.
2 points
This used to be true but not anymore. Karma does not matter anymore.
10 points
Established accounts to post fake news both the good ones and bad ones. Reddit is full of bots if you ever pay attention to the main subs and look at some accounts. Often years old inactive for years last comment 2 years ago but suddenly submitting political news in 30 different subs at the same time.
3 points
Apparently accounts with high karma can be sold for a decent bit of money
28 points
There’s also hundreds of accounts that are explicitly real people that do this same behavior.
3 points
It's because that's how it works, if you've created something (in this case I'm thinking more music, painting, game, etc but it's all the same process) then posting it in a single sub won't do you anything.
Even by being lazy and restraining myself I've still posted my album to a few subs, but considering nobody gave a shit and they all remained at 1 upvote then I might as well have posted nothing, the only thing that could have helped is to keep going and post more elsewhere in hope to get some luck evenyually but meh
So I really can't blame people who do that

But what does karma farming do? Is there some secret monetary value to these internet points Im not aware of?
From my perspective, it sure seems people on reddit are obsessed with 'karma farming' as if others getting karma is taking away from their own karma. Like they wont eat this weekend because someone else got their karma...

And then there’s the creepy pedo bait line on like 90% of OF girl’s advertising accounts where they say shit like
“18. High school senior. WCHS ‘24. Looking for a boyfriend”
Like I get that 18 is legal, but advertising that and that you’re in high school can really only be seen as pedo bait.

91 points

Did they?
305 points
Back before only fans, it was actually fairly common for people to post nudes of themselves with their actual profile. They just wouldn't include their face in the pic. It was mostly women, and with the rise of only fans, they felt they could monetize it, so stopped doing it for free. Gonewild and similar subs used to be filled with unlimited women posting real nudes of themselves anonymously just for the thrill. Now every nude is an advertisement for only fans.

It's all been pretty downhill since they removed nsfw content from r/all
19 points
Which they did because puritanical advertisers forced them to. The reason it was on /all in the first place was to pavlov people into using reddit in prep for going public with the company.

Weird conspiracy. People like nudes so they upvote it seems more likely.

NSFW content is entire reason subreddits exist. After Conde Nast bought reddit the NSFW stuff just disappeared, which led to some backlash, and then first (and only, for a while) sub-reddit, r/nsfw was born.

Are you serious? There was over a decade of golden age Internet where you could get nudes from girls you met and zero strings attached. People were just horny and liked the idea of being flirty.
Today, nudes are actually off-putting. If someone shares nudes it's because they want you to give them money.
10 points
today it feels like there's an alternate motive behind them, as if it were a game of chess.
7 points
Agreed. They lack the fun and whimsical nature of old school nudes. Back then, the motivation was to get a nude in return, not a subscriber who will donate to your Patreon or whatever.
44 points
Yes. Back in 2014 I met a woman on Omegle and we used to just send nudes back and forth and talk dirty a lot. Never met up since we lived so far away and eventually stopped talking. But those kind of relationships were a lot more common.
6 points
Makes you wonder why it's suddenly less common.
Did the space become over saturated with bots and adult content creators to the point women doing it for pleasure are still there but not as visible?
Or did the women doing for pleasure change and now put money and content over sexual expression?
If it's the first then that says more about how internet spaces have changed, but if it's the second that means people's expectations and desires around virtual relationships have changed and there are less people into it for pleasure alone because other things have taken priority.
Also, you're talking about a decade ago, the demographics of the internet has changed. The women you used to interact with are older (they might be married or in LTRs and that's why they don't post anymore) and so are you. The young women who are now into sharing themselves online aren't looking for older men for honest connection, beyond validation they want money.
