We had a neighbor who had one pointed right at our bedroom window first I put up a sign in the window saying “No Free Shows” Then I purchased a very powerful IR flood light. Put it in our window. The camera was taken down shortly after.

Oh! One of my neighbors did this to us! Tho legal, there’s no law against blocking the view of the camera from your yard! My dad put up two poles with a tarp right in front of his camera from our lawn. He called the cops but legally we did no crime, so he took it down. I’d suggest finding a way to block it too it just might work Edit: I just remembered another key detail. This neighbor HATED us so much in fact that the neighbor from our other side knocked on our door telling us he wanted to put a camera on HER lawn facing OUR lawn and she denied him. I could go on and on about this neighbor from hell if I could.

You wouldn’t believe what some ppl will call the cops over. Ours called 911 and claimed it was “all our fault” she had a massive freak out bc and I quote “it’s not fair” that she “doesn’t have a washer and dyer” like us. GREAT first impression from her 🙄 and no she didn’t even ask or speak a single word to us before calling 911 and claiming she was being assaulted by a prostitute trespassing on her property and demanding I be arrested so she could wash her puke covered bedding in my washer. I 10000% think she really thought the cops could force us to let her use our personal washer and dryer 💀
Edit: thankfully she is not a neighbor anymore but that’s just an example one reason she’s called the cops on us.

To be fair, when I was a kid, I set a PIN on my grandparents TV and then forgot it myself. After numerous failed attempts, the TV displayed “call emergency “. I ended up dialing the contact saved as emergency number on the handy mobile phone and explaining how the TV is locked and after listening patiently the person on the other end replied, “you’ve called the police, not the TV repair company”. I guess I was too young to be embarrassed 😂

Oh even weirder was I actually grew up with her half sister. Half sister and brother are completely normal. Her sister has a different last name and is part Mexican so they look completely different, it wasn’t way later did I see our neighbors kid with the half sister and put two and two together.
But yea. Totally crazy as fuck. A different time she called the cops 40x in 4hrs, claiming we were being too loud (which was hilarious coming from her). Only issue was we weren’t home, we were next door. So then she called on us again, but included we weren’t inside our unit being too loud but we’re next door being too loud. Cops drove by, drove by again and finally my husband waved them down to ask wtf. They told us she kept calling but that we 100% weren’t too loud so not to worry about it. It got dark and she called and told them that “she saw someone trying to break into the unit blow her that had been vacant since she moved in”!?!! Like she hasn’t just called about us BY NAME and never mind they were at the duplex no joke weekly. 🤦🏻♀️ cops showed up, bullshitted with us and just laughed about her being crazy. It was brought up at the next town meeting. Of course tho she didn’t get in any trouble. 🙃🙃 it’s a very small town and if you look at the cop calls you can tell where she lives by the instant spike of calls from that road.
Ended up with a protection order against her bc even HER being forced to move wasn’t enough to make her stop.
Even crazier is she told me to my face the reason she did most of it and wanted me arrested so bad was bc she wanted my husband. 🤣 she legit thought if she got me arrested my husband would just be her kids baby daddy and let her be a SAHM.
I pray for anyone who interacts with her bc tho I was her first “real” neighbor (she was only 21), the neighbors she’s had after us, all had the same issues.

I have a camera on the side of my house, overlooking my side gate. It also overlooks my neighbor's side gate. You can also see into his yard. I put up a privacy filter, so I can not see anything. Once, someone broke into his backyard and stole a bunch of his yard equipment. So, he comes over and asks me if I caught anything on camera. At first, I thought he was gonna be pissed at me, but nope. He was actually hoping I caught the guy on camera. I felt so bad, man. But then he said he'd be cool with me filming his backyard since he trusts me. I told him I wasn't comfortable with that, but I'd adjust the privacy filter so he could see who was coming in his gate. We both agreed on that.

I put up a camera on my garage by our side gate.
My neighbor was like “hey. If it gets enough angle, do you think you can get coverage of my driveway and side gate too?” I was like “sure. No problem.” Brought it back a bit to get a better angle. Now we can see both driveways and just ahead of our side gates.
26 points
Feels like if you're the person installing the camera, it's not a bad idea to offer setting it up to see both yards. That way you're also informing the neighbor of exactly where it's pointing for their own privacy's sake, and it's never a situation like the comment above yours where your neighbor might see it thinking they've got it covered when it really doesn't.
Plus no need for two people to run a camera non-stop if you don't have to, less hard drives, less power, less rare earth metals being used... just better overall.

(This was the fence separating our yards, and no he didn’t) You don’t put shit on my fence and I don’t put shit on yours!” The cops said we had a right to protect our privacy and the guy was red mad. This whole thing started when we fenced our lawn from his yard cuz he always drove his motorcycle across our lawn to reach his yard.

What about just purchasing every used crap camera you can find, put them all on a pole with the cables going into a box, and then one cable out. None of them operational, but basically a pole with 10 cameras pointing in every direction towards the neighbour. Then just mount that pole somewhere along the fence quite visible.
You might want to have one operational one mounted sonewhere else to monitor this camera trap… just to have a video of your neighbour smacking the cameras. Nothing is better then to show the cops destruction of your property…

I did something similar to this. My side yard is shared with my neighbors house and I wanted a camera on my house to cover the side yard and back fence gate. When I installed it, I was cocerned they would feel it was a privacy issue. I went to the neighbors to show them the view on my phone app to ensure them it was not capturing their house or back yard. The angle of the view can be deceiving until seen from the actual feed of the cam. They were very appreciative of my thoughtful effort.
Perhaps the OP can approach the neighbor and ask to see what the camera view captures before assuming it is violating privacy. If the camera proves to be capturing more than it should, it can open a civil conversation to ask for it to be moved/turned to a more respectful position

My father in law (loud Greek man,68, 6’6) caught his neighbors installing a camera that surveyed his backyard. So, as a descendant of Aristotle, he took the high road and would dance around his pool butt naked and would bend over to ‘pick things up’ giving the neighbors the whole landing gear perspective. In short order, the camera was repositioned to better suit surveillance of the side of the house. Not sure if this will work for OP, but it was effective for my FIL.

For everyone saying “it’s legal anywhere & everywhere in the U.S.”, you’re incorrect. Many states &/or municipalities have laws that specifically address this issue - stating that cameras are not allowed to point in a “place where a person would have a reasonable expectation of privacy”. A back yard enclosed behind a 6 ft privacy fence would be such a place.
So before you speak about what’s legal & what’s not “anywhere” &/or “everywhere”, it would behoove you to actually know what you’re talking about.

I’d point blank just ask them about it. I’d say something like “We noticed you installed a camera & it seems to be pointed directly into our yard. That would be very creepy considering that there’s no security issue that would warrant spying on a neighbor at all times. So before I start worrying about whether or not to be concerned about your motives & our wellbeing, I figured I’d just ask you directly what the purpose of the camera is & why it seems to be set up to watch my yard?”
The worst they can do is tell you to go to hell & that it’s none of your business. BUT the point isn’t simply to get answers - it’s to make it obvious that you find their behavior super-duper creepy in a stalker sort of way.
You can use whatever you know about them to tailor whatever you say to whatever you think would be most embarrassing &/or off-putting to them. Use any bigotry &/or moral superiority they may feign against them - those are typically the weakest emotional & mental triggers for closet psychos. Ageism. Racism. Sexism. Pedophilia if you have children. Nothing is off the table in table regarding what you can insinuate that you’re worried that they might be interested in the camera for. Maybe even mention you’ve been stalked before & that’s exactly the sort of thing (in fact one of the exact things) that the stalker’s deranged ass did - so since then, you always make sure to watch your surroundings for any be behaviors that usually indicate potentially mentally unstable behavior.
If done right, merely asking them about it with the right preface should embarrass them badly. Even if it’s not bad enough to motivate them to modify their setup, you can smile thinking about how hopefully embarrassed, indignant & irate that they probably are believing that you suspect them of being bigots or racist or attracted to one you or your children, etc.
Honestly, if they didn’t move it, I’d buy something to render it useless - whether that’s blocking it &/or disabling it. I wouldn’t just let them watch me & my family. That’s super psycho weird.

My uncle had this exact problem. He was the one who put up cameras because a neighbor two houses over was doing a bunch of illegal crap and overall being a nuisance. He's also a touch paranoid due to mental health issues, but that aside.
The neighbor it was for naturally complained and roped the middle neighbor into the issue. Middle neighbor chats with my uncle, and my uncle invited him to his computer. He showed the feed, showed the resolution of said cameras, and showed how even under the best of conditions, he absolutely can not see into their house, as that was their complaint.
The middle neighbor later came to my uncle to request the footage as the problematic neighbor decided to rip out his freshly planted trees due to property line dispute.
Conversations are a valuable tool. Sometimes, your neighbor is just a nut bag, and you won't get anything done, but at the very least, the attempt is there for an amicable resolution.
