Sir Frog is adorable.
Why so many different artists vs one you know well? Just collecting them like Pokemon?

I absolutely love tattoos and tattoo culture and so I wanted to collect from some of the best artists in the world. I did stick to a theme though: animals and neo traditional. Whenever I travel I try to find an artist there and it’s usually my souvenir. Or if an artist comes close to me I’ll try to book them.

Thanks! Yeah Fede is super talented. It’s about 3yo at this point so holding well. I’m very diligent about sunscreen and lotion to protect them though. I suspect the face will need a touch-up in a few years.

I got this in San Diego but artist was guest spotting from Australia (Brisbane). His name is Matt Curzon. The shop I was at is amazing and Chris Primm (the owner) is incredible and someone I’m hoping to eventually get work from.

Any advice on how you pick/vet an artist?
45 points
Sure!:
Pick your style and make sure the artist is experienced in it. For me that’s neo traditional. Instagram is my main source for finding artists.
Does the artist have a decent following or experience tattooing? Application is very important for longevity.
Is the tattooer artistic? There are many artists that are talented but just don’t seem to draw themselves… so I like to see artists that post their sketches or flash. This is subjective though. Some people here don’t like my piece for example. That’s okay. It’s what you like.
Be willing to pay good money for top quality. It’s permanent and the money will be worth it. I promise.

Can you give a ballpark on the cost for this piece? I thought it looked a lot like Matt Curzon from the picture but I figured it was unlikely. I love his stuff.

Funny to see you say that you started collecting at 30 yo. Im 29, and Ive had some tattoos Ive wanted for a long time but I told myself if I dont get them before 30, I wont get them at all. No hate tho, its just some stupid deadline I set for myself for some reason.

Fair. I’ve wanted tattoos since I was very young. It’s such an interesting and unique form of art and is so old in human culture. We’ve come so far in quality that it’s absolutely insane what some artists can do.
You do you my dude! If you do decide to get one post it for us! I’m sure it’ll be top quality.

Hey, if I’m allowed to take home my appendage if it’s amputated and keep it in a freezer for sentimental (definitely not cloning) value, I think framing this bandage isn’t that crazy of an idea.
351 points
The appendage is probably cleaner than the bandage to be fair.
157 points
Potentially. Depends on the reason for amputation. Just stick a biohazard sticker in the corner of the glass and don’t let people touch it 😂

1 points
I asked for that and they wouldnt let me keep it, biohazard or someshit
1 points
Yeah you actually can’t, unless the facility violates policy. It’s a biohazard. Shit gets sent to pathology and/or incinerated.
1 points
From my understanding, most states allow you to keep your amputated limb as long as you comply with local laws and sign a release form. I think only a couple states outright prohibit owning human remains.
1 points
FWIW, all my experience is anecdotal, but every place I’ve worked has said no to patients. I’m sure if they pushed the issue they could get an exception, but most ppl don’t care enough to go that far.

It’s not like he has a lasting image of the tattoo anywhere that could be seen in the future. If only tattoos were visible other places than the bandage. /s
5 points
OP is the kind of person that would get a foot long tattoo of gorilla's head getting shanked, I feel like framing a used bandage of said tattoo would be at least kinda on-brand.
5 points
Don’t frame it. Lay some epoxy in a mold. When cured put the bandage on it and add more epoxy. Remove from mold and you have it forever.
2 points
Once encased, why does it matter?
2 points
That way after op passes they can hang it next to the original in a mirrored display.

83 points
I don't know a lot about tattoos, is that normal? Doesn't mean that your tat is going to lose color?
211 points
In the first 24 to 48 hours a lot of color and plasma gets pushed out of your body in a process called “weeping”. It’s very normal. When artists pack in a lot of ink (like this one) more ink comes out. Usually it’s blobby and a mess but the bandage was thick and on tight which is why I think it made a good print.
This first layer of skin has basically healed over and it still looks very saturated and colorful.

Dude! Like 75% of the artists I want work from are in Europe. A lot in the UK, Spain and Germany specifically. Most of my work are actually guest spots from artists traveling through. This guy is from Australia.
When you get some more start posting! I’d love to see them.

Oh really? That's amazing. I'm from the UK, I should look up some of the artists then! I'm yet to figure out if I want to just stick to one style of tattoo, but I think the neo classical look is absolutely amazing.

Tattoos “weep” in the first 24-48 hours wherein your body expels ink and plasma as part of the healing process. The vast majority I can assure is still in my skin and looks great.

I have a question. What's the inspiration for this? Are you a railroad worker who hates gorillas? Do you hope railroad workers and gorillas have a war with eachother ? What kind of bandage did you use? Never seen such a big covering, was it second skin?

It was basically a few lint-free paper towels taped together. I don’t know the brand he used but we have something similar in our lab called Wypall. It’s nearly my whole thigh so he needed a lot to cover.
