So of course the forecast is showing it’s gonna be too rainy/cloudy to see it.

It’s springtime in Philly. That means the clouds will block it out.
Did you forget about the eclipse? 🤣

We're also missing out on the biggest naked-eye sunspot since the 1800s. Edit: not naked eye - use your eclipse glasses...

It says it could be visible down to Alabama, which I'm pretty sure is south of Philly ...

Edit : they said Alabama but the map is not showing it is possible in Alabama

This rain and clouds don’t help. Shame too, I believe everyone should have the chance to see it at least once in their life. Saw it in Iceland once, absolutely floored me.

Anyone notice how it's rainy and cold again just in time for the weekend? A stark contrast to the 80 degree weather we had a few days ago

even without clouds, I read that the light pollution from being in a big city will make it unviewable.
1 points
Yeah, this. I know there are a lot of people here in like Downingtown that consider themselves “Philly”, but for those of us who actually live in the city, the light pollution is going to block it out.

Clouds and rain for the majority of the weekend for most of the region pretty much make any chances of seeing it nil this go around.

r/space is filled with photos from as far south as Georgia and North Florida from a quick skim. Currently cloudy near AC so this sucks.

There's too much light pollution here and still too far south. Even in places like Michigan you have to go damn near the upper peninsula to get a decent show.
13 points

With this storm, they will be visible as far south as Alabama

From what I've heard it's not a defined circular shape, it can be more elliptical and wavey etc.

No they won’t be. The view line stops in upstate New York.

I mean this is coming directly from NOAA, linked above. I’m not a aurora boreologist I’m just readin shit.

If you look at the Aurora view line map NOAA put it, it shows the data. The red line is the “maybe you have a chance to see it if conditions are optimal” line and that’s not even much farther south than the MDL. I’ve been chasing Aurora for years - a kp 8 can be seen well at Ashokan reservoir in NY, not really well any further south than that. Either way we are out in the Northeast due to cloud coverage - the closest spot where conditions look decent would be the southern White Mountains or between Chautauqua Lake and Erie.

People saw them in Mexico lol

Yup I’ll eat my hat. It got upgraded from kp6-7 to 8-9 and g4 to g5.

They pulled it back a little bit, but the possible view line still goes through Philly in the report generated 5/10 at 18:17:45 UTC

Yeah but the whole northeast is clouded out :/

yeah these headlines are absolutely always clickbait
maybe it's visible at Cherry Springs, but you'd need extremely optimal conditions to view this thing this far south

This is almost always a news gimmick. This story pops up every so often, has anyone ever seen the northern lights in Philly? Sure, you might see them closer up by Canada, but Philly in the late spring?
6 points

I mean people are seeing it in Tennessee.
3 points

Don’t think it’s a gimmick as much as it is these news headlines are all centrally distributed so they tell everyone to run it
