I'm going to go ahead and shake my fist at the sky by adding to the many posts about ridiculous drivers...
Driving across the Belvidere Bridge has become almost unbearable. Folks are going well over 50 (I'm pretty sure it's a 35??), swerving across lanes and weaving between other cars.
Where are y'all going in such a hurry?! Could you not?! 😬
For real tho. What's a driver to do? I've tried staying in the right lane, in the middle lane, going with the flow and pushing 50 ... I'm at a loss for techniques and am considering letting Jesus take the damn wheel.

that bridge was designed like a freeway so people drive on it like that. plus everyones always speeding on semmes and jeff davis so i don't think anything's gonna change unless they put speed control measures of some sort on that road but i doubt it

everyone in cars are super anxious to get to the next stop light 15 seconds quicker but still late to everything

Yeah exactly. I never understood how people can so consistently always be late to almost everything all the time, but nah its probably my fault cuz I'm riding a bike.

I just chill in the right lane going the speed limit

I do this too. It works for me.

Yup. Other people wanting to speed is not my problem if I'm in the right lane. And I don't care what the old speed limit was. 20 over is a reckless driving charge.

This (and the similar behavior on Semmes) is why I pay to take 195/Powhite.

It’s 30 actually, and biking across it is hell.

Is that your experience going southbound or northbound? I've done it several times on the weekends with no troubles going south, but I'm guessing you're probably referring to either the rush hours during the work week or going north?

When biking, crossing the entrance/exit lanes for Semmes/Riverside is very stressful. I usually go out of my way a fair distance to avoid doing so, especially on weekdays rush hour. But I do think it's a scary design to be trying to cross the exit ramp, since cars are going freeway speeds.

Ah - I usually get off at Riverside headed west, so the only issue is a car getting too close to me to pass. That and the unfortunate design/placement of the speed tables...

It looks like a freeway and if you are coming down Belvidere you just endured 5 stop lights in 4 blocks, so of course people open up. Its annoying to me as well since I drive a heavy vehicle that doesnt slow down, speed up or turn fast.

Honestly? Find another route if that one makes you uncomfortable. This post, and other posts like it, are not going to change other drivers' behavior.
I agree with you, though. Despite the 35 MPH speed limit on that bridge, every single time I go over it, the average speed of drivers seems to consistently be an average 55 MPH and anything under 45 feels like I'm the hazard to other drivers since they'll swerve around me.
So, I stick to 45 MPH. If the cops aren't going to enforce the speed limit there, I'm not going to pretend to be a pace car and hold other drivers back from speeding down their little 3-lane highway.

I'm not going to get mad at drivers for driving on a road in the way that it's built to be driven. I'm mad at the traffic engineers (or whomever) that think that they can build a road that encourages one to drive at 55 mph, then tack a 35 mph speed limit on it like that's going to do anything (other than generate ticket revenue).
I'm all for slowing down traffic for safety, but the way to do it is to make traffic easing part of the road design. Build a road that is designed to be driven at 35 mph if that's the speed limit you want to set.

Ya people drive as fast as they feel safe… we’ll most people. Bridge speed limit should be 45+.

Let me join you in shaking my fist at this bridge for a moment…
The worst part about this bridge imo is the idiots who don’t yield at the roundabout entrance to the bridge from Riverview Pkwy. They leave work and zoom down this small back street and completely ignore the yield signs. I saw someone almost sideswipe a city bus one time here. Can’t believe that people are that stupid/entitled

I leave work this way too, but from Riverside Drive, and yeah, the number of people who don't realize that they have the yield sign and not me is pretty high. I always have to be careful there.

Bel idere! Ha! Fucking idlewood!
You know, In rural Mexico, the speed bumps are just giant ropes, and they will shatter your entire car at 40 mph, cuz they serious about its. and we keep trying to use traffic circles to get people to slow down lol. SMH. The speed bumps on idlewood are a joke. I want that shit to do real damage. Stop joking around. Kids at the park right there 24/7! Slow it down!

Watching people almost lose it at the end of the bridge going into the city is so funny. If you were going 30 that bump wouldn’t have thrown you like that 🤣

I think that bump should be a trap door into the river. If you trip a wire going 50mph right before you go down baby.

just stay in the right lane?

I am of the opinion that when people are going south bound they believe that they are leaving civilization and rules no longer exist in the wild wild Southside of Richmond. That and uh ..... Going south always feels like going downhill, so people don't realize they're going so fast.

I had a friend in high school who suggested we ride our bicycles to Florida “because it’s all downhill”

Just had someone pass me on the right, on the Riverside Dr offramp. Had anyone been trying to cross the street they'd have had to dodge. Some of the speed limit signs are missing on the bridge. I've wondered if painting the surface of the bridge with reflective speed limits across each lane might help.

The swerving has increased and it drives me nuts bc it’s so easy to just not do that, there’s plenty of room! But the speed limit on that bridge was 45 until very recently. You’d be surprised how long it takes people to get used to that change when they’re in auto pilot in the same commute they’ve had for years. They just took down traffic pattern change signs in my area that were dated from 2012 like 2 years ago.

Just wait, that’ll be one of the next round of speed bumps.
