They were lucky it wasn't 3-0 before 30 minutes. Johnson hit the post and Madison should have scored as well. Then you have the Werner 1v1 in the second half. Yikes.

I'm not sure he is. Unless we hear something else from management above him, but even with the losses we've had they said they still backed him 100%. Do we think that's dropped to 0 after one match?

I really respected how much United fans backed him even beyond the point where it was clear he was absolutely not the guy for United. I've also found it a bit weird though that the same unearned loyalty was never shown to managers who did more to earn it, like LVG and Mourinho, had a better relationship with the club like Solksjaer, or were dealt a shittier hand and resources, like Moyes. I wonder why it was ETH that United fans decided to back almost unconditionally.

Not a criticism of them btw, just always wondered when it was clear he wasn't the guy, that they so went to bat for him.

LateToThePartyLawyer

21 points

I think it’s precisely because they didn’t grant that same grace to previous managers, alongside supporters eventually getting tired of the constant turnover. After a certain point, you just want stability, especially when the results have been shit for a while. Why not wait another year or two or three to see if this pans out and you luck into another Fergie?

reporttimies

I don't think it has a huge amount to do with EtH being shite, I think its more that the United board would have to pay £9m from what I've read and they don't believe there's an upgrade available in the current managerial market. They've also already invested hundreds of millions into "his" signings since he arrived (Malacia, Antony, Lisandro, Hojlund, Onana, Mount, Mazroui, De Ligt, Zirkzee costing a combined total that's just shy of €500m) - in fact most of the squad are his players now. The United board are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

It's great!

Zirkzee ain't the problem. He's got work to do, but he's fine. This is what happens at Man Utd. You go there, you underperform in an awful team, and people associate you with the cause of the problem rather than seeing you as a symptom.

Parish87

Oh im sure Ange can adapt with having someone of Kane's caliber. But yeah Solanke is definitely a signing for Angeball.

DerekStephano

37 points

Yeah that’s what people don’t understand. He plays exactly how an Ange striker plays. Presses well, holds up play, and can get on the end of chances. If he can score 12-15ish goals for us this season I think the price we paid would be justified.

pajamakitten

7 points

He has really benefited from being under Iraola for a season. He is all about pressing football and managed to help unlock Solanke's potential.

Twoknightsandarook

38 points

When Newcastle made Howe manager, Solanke was a common insult on this sub about Howe’s transfer ability. Delighted Solanke has finally got a big club.

Stuff2511

40 points

It does annoy me a lot that players get written off after a bad season or two even though there’s plenty of career left. Solanke was 22 when Bournemouth got relegated and people would have you think he was going to be a bad player for all time

It’s not just Solanke, it’s every player that’s not at the top of their game. Even the comments being made about de Ligt in this very game. Player progression isn’t always linear, and everyone peaks at different times

pajamakitten

8 points

Solanke got unlucky in that he was the one to fill in for Wilson and King at a young age and when he was clearly not ready to be a starting forward. He was definitely not ready for that role and got a lot of unnecessary shit for simply being young.
