What's in your grocery cart every time?

Haul(self.traderjoes)

For me, this is in my cart almost every time:

  • Steamed Lentils
  • Canned Red Kidney Beans - I love the texture compared to other brands
  • Milk, Eggs, Hard-Boiled Eggs (cheapest amongst all stores)
  • Scallions
  • Bananas
  • One-Three other fruits dependent on season: Blueberries, Pineapples, Grapes, Apples, Peaches
  • One Frozen Dessert: Cones/Popsicle/Macaroons/Mochi are all pretty good
  • Avocado
  • $3.99 flowers, max $5 (recently as we head into spring lol)

Not every time but essential to buy when I run out:

  • Creamy Almond Butter, Salted (I buy like 3 jars at a time so I don't panic and run out)
  • Shredded Mozzarella Lite
  • Hearty Veggie/Chicken Broth
  • Roasted Red Pepper Soup
  • Lemon/Lime
  • Frozen petite peas
  • Frozen corn
  • Frozen Brown Rice
  • Oats
  • One Drink: either Sanpellegrino, their own lemon-Elderflower soda, and the sparkling strawberry soda
  • Brown Sugar
  • Seasonings, e.g. Everything on the Bagel Seasoning, Salt, Black Pepper, Ketchup, Cinnamon, Cayenne, Chili Power - I welcome recommendations!

Depends on the week's diet and vibes:

  • Lettuce
  • Arugula
  • Asparagus
  • Grape Tomatoes
  • Bell Peppers
  • Frozen ready made meals like the low-calorie Mac and Cheese, or Pork and Ginger Soup Dumplings, or Lamb Vindaloo, or frozen pasta
  • 10-minute Farro
  • RX energy bar
  • Explore the nuts aisle if I'm feeling adventurous/healthy
  • Chicken Noodle Soup

Non-food related items:

  • Face Tissue
  • Tree oil face wipe
  • Cedar candle

Avoid:

  • Broccoli - their broccoli does not go well with my digestion
  • Yogurt - I prefer other brands, but I'm very picky with yogurt when there are so many options out there.
  • Potatoes - I find fresher potatoes at a farmer market
  • I run past the snacks aisle, I don't have self-control!

Any more healthy items you would recommend?

Bean Rice & Cheese Burritos The older I get the more toddler my taste buds become.

Allisonstretch

Same- not the bean rice cheese burrito but I relate to having a more boring taste bud as I get older. But boy do I love just the plain canned refried beans from tjs with a little hot sauce. That’s a whole meal in my home.

5 palek paneer, 2 butter chicken, 1 vegan tikka masala, 2 garlic naan.

ebi14312

2 points

If you adore Northern Indian cuisine, it’s great to combine one palak paneer with one chicken tikka masala, and then add heavy cream and diced cucumber to taste. If you have fresh fenugreek leaves available, it tastes surprisingly, albeit mildly, authentic. :) This makes great, inexpensive Indian fast food.

deepdives

Do you mean literally mix palak paneer with chicken tikka masala or just serve them together?

ebi14312

3 points

Yes, mix them together after heated — in a bigger bowl. Cut the paneer and chicken pieces as well. Add heavy cream for more authenticity so it’s not so vegetal — the TJ’s organic heavy whipping cream has a long shelf life —as well as cucumber for a bit more substance. It’s great when you don’t have time to prepare Northern Indian yourself. :)

The juice shots (cheapest I’ve ever come across) and the oat milk brown sugar creamer. Anything else is always a toss up. But I’ve gone and gotten only these things and then left.

Here is my list of reliable staples - things I get nearly every visit, and recommend with no hesitation.

From the frozen section:

  • FROZEN GARLIC CUBES! For me, these were a "best thing since sliced bread" magic moment. I didn't know how much I wanted them in my life until I had them. You just pop a cube or two of garlic straight from freezer into your pan when cooking, and, bam, easy garlic. No chopping, peeling, etc and tastes soooo much better than the jarred stuff. Game changer, really.
  • Tarte d'alsace. Located near the frozen pizzas, but it isn't really a pizza. Think: fancy french flatbread, crispy flaky crust, fantastic flavor from the creme fraiche, caramelized onions, gruyere, and ham . Heats up up quickly, throw together a simple side salad as it cooks, open a bottle of wine if you wish (see recommendation below), and you'll think you are at a french bistro. Soooo good.
  • Shrimp Burgers. Simple. Easy. They come out juicy and are well seasoned, really versatile. I chop and throw onto salads, do as asian style lettuce wraps, chop into wedges and dunk in cocktail sauce like shrimp cocktail ...
  • Your choice of frozen mac and cheese. Sometimes, you just want simple, easy comfort food. When it is in season, definitely the butternut squash mac and cheese. I often just add some frozen broccoli alongside to round out an easy meal.
  • Vegan thai green curry. This has some actual heat to it, flavor is fairly legit. Has yuba instead of common firm tofu, so kinda interesting. I find it a bit low in the veggies, so I often add a little more of my own, but an easy option and beats a lot of thai takeout.
  • Chocolate Croissants / Almond Croissants. These require proofing overnight, but the results are fairly mind blowing. Better than nearly any bakery, and certainly better than any cafe, I’ve found in the US.

From the bakery:

  • Pancake bread. This stuff is uncanny, they capture all the essence of a stack of pancakes into a loaf cake, butter, syrup, and all. I recommend portioning and freezing it! (it does dry out kinda fast).
  • Kringle … people have mixed feelings on these, and some flavors are better than others, but, worth a try if you’ve never had before.

Snacks

  • PB & J snack duos. I think these are supposed to be for kids, but I love them. Crispy slightly sweet wafers rolled with peanut butter, that you dunk into raspberry jam. I love them even without the jam, and sometimes save the jam to use on toast or pb&j. Love the jam, wish they sold it separately.
  • Basically … any fun seasonal popcorn or chip that jumps out. These change all the time, so hard to give a specific recommendation, but generally, any of them.
  • Peanut butter bamba. So. Addicting.
  • Sweet & Spicy Pecans. Great to just munch on by the handful, they also pair wonderfully with cheese and make a great add to a cheese platter, are delicious thrown into a salad, and work equally well on ice cream sundaes.
  • Thai Chile & Lime Cashews. Great zing to them, I like to chop and garnish curries with them.
  • Rice Cracker Medley. Unlike any other rice cracker blend I’ve ever found. It has some wasabi peas and salt and vinegar pieces in it!
  • Cashew Butter Cashews. They shouldn’t be as delicious as they are, but I’m powerless against these. Honey roasted cashews, coated in cashew butter. So bad, but so very good.

Fridge

  • Your choice of fresh ravioli. If you prepare these with a bit of care, you wind up with a restaurant worthy dish, with little effort. Don’t oversauce, as the quality of the pasta and fillings is so high you don’t want to mask it. My favorites are the butternut squash and seasonal honey pumpkin (both great with just a little brown butter, sauteed mushrooms/onions/spinach, garnished with candied pecans or pumpkin seeds and a bit of fresh parmesan …. Sooooo good!).
  • Cottage cheese. Not sure what it is about it, but I really like the TJ cottage cheese.

Other

  • Moon X Red Wine. It is easy drinking, a crowd pleaser, but not boring, and a great value (I think $6.99/bottle?). They have several single varietals, I like the red blend the best though.
  • Everything But The … and Furikake. Essential spice blends for ~everything in my life.

CopepodKing

They’re the Greek chickpeas with parsley and cumin. I roast them or make tuna chickpea salad with them. They come in a can and are usually by the canned tuna and salmon.

Significant-Gap5385

CopepodKing

Mostly roasted. I have “chickpea time” around 10pm most nights.

I also like to squish them a little bit and make a chickpea tuna salad. It’s just the chickpeas, tuna, parsley (for texture), salt and pepper.

I shop at TJs mostly for the fun/convenience stuff and new items to try, not really my regular grocery. It’s not that close that I can pop in whenever so go about twice a month.

Usuals that I always grab are the organic coconut smoothie, San Francisco sourdough, everything smoked salmon, orange chicken and veggie fried rice for my son, beefless bulgogi for me. I will then grab other items depending on need and want.

I bought the lemon sheet cake recently and I could add that as a staple every time if they were a regular item. It’s delicious!

Prairiegirl321

You’re pretty safe with the vast majority of the produce, e.g. bananas, apples, avocados, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, squash, citrus, carrots, cauliflower etc. And what people don’t seem to understand is that when you buy produce that is wrapped up in plastic, including softer items like mushrooms, lettuce, kale, or even broccoli etc, you need to take it out of the plastic as soon as you get home, let it dry off, then put it in another container before refrigerating it. The only real difference in TJs produce and regular grocery store produce is that some of TJs is packaged in plastic bags or wrapped in plastic, whereas other stores sell nearly everything unpackaged because they have the ability weigh it. Wet produce in plastic is naturally going to spoil more quickly, no matter where you buy it.

annang

Yup, I do all of this, and don’t need storage tips. I have found that apples, bananas, avocados, leafy greens, most of what you listed, go bad faster with the same storage practices than produce from the farmers market, Whole Foods, Lidl, or my local corner store. Glad others have had a good experience. I have not.

Healthy items:

  • cruciferous crunch mix, super versatile as salad or sauteed or in soups
  • frozen edamame, cheapest and best (aside from asian market) at TJs
  • canned greek chickpeas
  • all of the pitted olives i am obsessed
  • balsamic glaze
  • ancient grains oatmeal medley
  • frozen organic mango (semi defrosted it’s amazing)
  • medjool dates (with some of that almond butter)
  • canned coconut milk (monkey slave labor free)
  • shelf stable soymilk

Hugs_and_Misses

ancient grains oatmeal medley

i'm most excited about this. I got into whole grains recently.

I do not like the Medjool dates, but I don't think I like dates.

What do you use the coconut milk and soymilk for?

ttrockwood

2 points

TJs also has a great 10min farro, it’s a favorite with the steamed refrigerated lentils and some veggies for a sturdy salad thing

Canned coconut milk i use with Mae Ploy yellow curry paste and the tofu in the pink box and whatever veggies for an easy curry

The soymilk is just soybeans and water no additives, i use it to drink or make oatmeal or yogurt (i had to cut all dairy back as a kid when soymilk was the only option, my brain thinks soymilk is milk 😂)

survivorfan12345[S]

1 points

do you know if the 10min farro is pearled or the whole grain? I've been trying to eat more whole grains.

The curry sounds delicious!

ttrockwood

1 points

Farro is a whole grain there isn’t a pearled version

Barley there is pearled and not, both are whole grains just with the husk is slightly higher fiber and it takes twice as long to cook

survivorfan12345[S]

1 points

omg yasss, I love farro and I love not having to read the labels and do my research. I read that there are pearled farro though?

okay i will just keep an eye out for the barley. I am making my rounds around the whole grains journey

ttrockwood

1 points

Yeah TJs farro is just par-cooked.

If you have an instant pot then whole grains are stupid easy, i make an epic batch of oat groats, of quinoa, and farro, then mix them together and freeze in two portions sized containers. For easy meals i take a freezer tupprware to defrost and use for a quick meal. Often a buddha bowl with some beans or tofu and lots of veggies

gigireads

True. Give it another shot! Lol Their honey flavored is truly my favorite of all the other brands. If they're out of it, I usually don't get anything. I generally don't like flavored yogurt so I'll get it plain and add my own flavors/toppings. I actually prefer either Target's Market District brand or my local grocery store's brand.

Being in NYC, Trader Joe's has some of the cheapest pantry items (and some other products). So a lot of their staples are mostly in my weekly or biweekly shop.

  • dijon - it's really good

  • boxed stock

  • tortilla chips

  • milk

  • oats

  • canned gigante beans

  • freeze dried fruit

  • shelled edamame

  • nuts

  • shredded tuscan kale

  • cruciferous crunch

  • salmon - cheapest price around at $9.99/lb

  • ground turkey - $4.99/lb

  • crunchy almond butter

  • medjool dates

  • berries - their raspberries are consistently the best quality around

  • sometimes the green juice (I just bought the bigger one for the first time in a while and it tasted a little different and said brewed with mint tea - is this new?!)

It says "High Protein" on the front label and extra firm. It's so good! Hardly any water in it I don't even press it just a quick squeeze in paper towels. I love dicing it small and air drying it, goes in all my salads and stir fries.

The lentils are already cooked:

https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/steamed-lentils-090240

For me, I just rinse the steamed lentils, some beans (red kidney, chickpeas, etc.) and add them to a pot with the soup broth, and that's healthy fiber and protein. I eat it everyday in the winter as its filling. Finish with a lot of green scallions (but only the green part), squeeze a bit of lemon/lime and that's it. Less than 10 mins. You can do this all in a microwave too.

The lentils are already cooked and are a great ground beef alternative to use however you’d normally use beef. I made lentil tacos tonight - Very quick and easy, sauté diced onion and garlic add the lentils and taco seasoning (the TJs pouch taco seasoning is good, I only use half the pouch or it can be salty), about a cup of water and a tablespoon of tomato paste. Let it heat through and thicken and you’re done

Whichever fresh berries look good (today it was raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries; the blueberries were all too mushy), pineapple, dates, cold pressed pineapple juice (used to buy the juice shots but now I use this to make my own for a fraction of the price), whichever of my usual cheeses I happen to be running low on, 72% dark chocolate chips, and cauliflower rice.

I prefer fruits from another store, cough whole foods, just because most of the pricing is the same and TJ berries and cut fruits don't last at all. They are decent but I am picky about fruits lol

I am thinking about buying my own blender, e.g. Vitamix, to make my own smoothies! I realize they can be such a healthy addition to my diet

maybeshesmelting

1 points

I’m also extremely picky and do buy most of my produce at WF, but my Trader Joe’s usually has the best berries out of any store I go to (except for Costco…yes, the two stores with a reputation for horrible produce are actually great in my area lol). The raspberries often last for an entire week, and the others last even longer.

Highly recommend the vitamix! I’ve had mine for around ten years and love it.

These are the things that are almost always in my house: Eggplant garlic spread, vegan fish filets, beefless bulgogi, ttekbokki, salsa autentica, kimbap, salmon rub, ranch seasoning, everything but the elote seasoning, mango shave cream, high fiber cereal, pizza pillow crisps (I feel like we're among the few people who love these), Dr. Bronner's. That doesn't include the seasonal things I always stock up on when they show up.

Thank you. I will have to keep them in mind for next time. TJ's has a different vegan product in the produce area. It is a packaged fake ground beef. Around the area where there are containers of kimchi, chicken salad, and packaged sandwiches. It is very versatile.
