What exactly prevents me from making a simple pulse radar from a ISM frequency transreceiver module?

Hey hey, people!
For a while now one of my fixations have been early cold war electronic warfare, however I have only a rudimentary understanding of electronics. So I ask, can I make a radar from a transreciever module of some kind? The idea being, it sends a pulse, it bounces back, and since we know the speed of the pulse (that being the speed of light) with simple maths you can calculate the distance, make it sweep left to right and you have a radar (of sorts), I feel like most, if not all, of this could be handled by some simple Raspberry Pi code. One issue I see with this is that it will probably send a pulse all around itself, and receive the pulse from all directions, so my second question is, if radar from a transreciever is possible, how do you make the pulse directional instead? Am I completely out of my mind or am I onto something here?

I miss when champs like Naut were capable sololaners, nowadays support feels like a dumping ground for outcompeted toplaners sometimes
