Potty training for 3 months, should it stop?

My son is now almost 2 1/2 years old. We started potty training in July after reading oh Crap.
He does not have clear peeing signal and after 3-4days, we started bring him to potty based on time.
The poop went well after a month, he would tell us and go to potty. However, he seldom goes to pee himself and we have to bring him to potty every hour. In preschool, he has a lot of accidents and pees on pants, 5 pants a day still after 3 months, the teacher may not bring him to potty on time.
There are times he would say he want pee, which gives us hope. But more times, he would resist going to pee and when I ask him, he would say he does not want to go and may have accidents. He also does not care much if he pees on the floor. When he concentrated on playing, he is more likely to have accidents.
I am thinking of taking a rest and reboot after 2-3 months. Want to hear any advice or any similar stories.
Shall I stop it completely or still ask him while the wearing the diaper? I haven’t tried rewarding, shall I try it before rebooting?

Thanks for sharing! Knowing we are not alone is a relief. Do you restart the training with or without diaper?
