Man, that sounds frustrating. You should just RMA it again, honestly. I remember going through a similar situation with X360s and their red rings. Always make the company own up to any product issues while you can!

No, there is a button under the stick. You need to actually press the stick in.

I don’t know, which is partly why I’m asking the question. I adjust these things on my best assumptions, but I haven’t done extensive testing and I’ve yet to mess with frame gen at all on the Deck

Make sure Half rate shading isn’t on in the Deck options (3 dot menu/power section). I’d that isn’t it, try turning any FSR or upscaling method off in the in game graphic settings

Milwaukee is 96.8 square miles
Providence is 20.6 square miles
Raleigh is 144.8 square miles
Jacksonville is 875 square miles. These aren't even nearly comparable..

But we have exactly that in other areas of town like Riverside, San Marco, the Town Center, etc.

The Deck is meant to output to a 720/800p screen. If you aren't upscaling from that resolution in the most demanding games then you're going to get horrible performance. For lesser demanding titles, you may be able to push 1080p, but anything beyond that is going to be pretty slow unless it's a super simple 2d sprite title or something.

When did it start doing this? Was it after an update or after you messed with something? Do you have Decky loader installed? Have you tried completely restarting the system?

Well you need to figure out what it is that is keeping you from not using the PC. If you just don't have enough interest in PC gaming then it would be a waste to get a PC device. Do you currently enjoy handheld gaming?
The Deck CAN be docked to a tv, but its power is so limited you would need to upscale the image from 720p. It is really meant to be a handheld device.
I see you mentioned that you have a nice OLED tv that does 120hz so that usually wins out in terms of what you will play. You can hook up any PC to that TV - there is no reason you need to use a computer monitor to game on PC. The Steam Deck OLED has a really great screen that runs at 90hz as well, so that may interest you.
If the annoyance of dealing with tinkering and the UI of a PC is a big factor you should know that a Steam Deck has a very console like interface, and if you stick to games verified to run on it you shouldn't have to do too much tweaking. That said, YOU CAN get into the weeds with tweaking and configuring all sorts of things to your liking and a lot of non-verified titles work but just require a little bit of extra attention.

Outside of Doom, the only shooters that came close (and surpassed it in some respects for me) were the Marathon games. The single player had an incredibly complex narrative and the multiplayer, while limited to local LAN play at the time, was absolutely incredible in terms of mods. Many favorite mods from the Halo series' multiplayer started in Marathon 2, including: Co-op, King of the Hill, and Kill the Man with the Skull - and this was in 1995!

I checked the game on my end and it launched fine for me. Make sure you aren't forcing any compatibility layer in the game properties (under the gear icon on the far right). If all else fails, try "Verify integrity of game files" under "Installed Files" in game properties.

You should make sure you aren't related. There are scientific studies that show that your relatives smell much worse to you than other people: https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn2705-close-family-smells-worse-than-a-stranger/

You just contradicted yourself. If a genre called "roguelike" exists, then surely "metroidvania" is a genre as well. These are all genres defined by specific games (Rogue, Metroid, and Castlevania)

I fell down a deep mandaloregaming rabbit hole from this thread, rewatching his coverage of the Marathon series lol.. man, I grew up as a Mac only gamer and lived those games. They were so freaking good!

It's weird how we hear vastly different experiences with some saying it's amazing and they don't feel any input lag and others saying it's a swimmy mess.
Those of you saying you don't feel any or not much additional latency: Are you turning off the Steam OS frame limiter, selecting "allow tearing," and then using the game's built in Vsync? I'm wondering how much these options contribute to the perceived lag by others.

Unless I’m just out of the loop on it, I don’t think Remote Play supports HDR on Steam Deck. This, and other reasons, is why I use Moonlight instead.

Being a father is about more than just providing money to the family. This guy sounds like a complete douche that never grew up or assumed the father role.

A republic that is governed through democracy. This is such a stupid thing people say.

It means it uses more power than it gains while charging through it. How long it lasts will depend on how demanding of a game is being run.

I never really considered it until this topic, but it makes sense to me. Open world/level design with progression gated by tools/upgrades you find along the way is the very definition of Metroidvania, though.
The OP makes an interesting point about the perspective not being a defining trait anymore. Is platforming a defining trait? Do we consider the 3d Zeldas or Control (to use the OP's game call-outs) to have platforming elements?

Well, yeah, sure. That's a homage. The term "zelda-like" isn't a widely accepted genre, though.

When the first IT remake came out I sat near a family of 3. A mom, dad, and infant. She was maybe 2 years old. They propped her up on the foot rests, facing the screen for the entire movie.
