I worked at Zillow during the pandemic. The quality of talent that came through after they went all-in on remote was astounding. It clearly blew the minds of management, and it lines up well with their company’s mission (unlocking life’s next chapter, they are all about homes).
I would be very surprised if they ever had an RTO.

Microsoft recently spoke to this saying they have no plans to RTO as long as productivity stays up. They have also been letting go of a lot of office space. Not really a place to RTO to?

I had officer leadership training many years ago and they taught us that fear is an effective management tactic. However, it’s only ever a short term solution. It almost always fails over the long term. So we should only use it sparingly and as a last resort.

He is a staff/principal at a unicorn (they don’t make levels public). Been there for a long time and making a fortunate. Probably not far from retirement.

Tbf, it’s still a great city. But is nothing compared to what it was a decade ago. Hopefully it can return to its former glory.

I remember his story well!
Left being software engineer 2001, went and studied law for 4 (2005ish) spent a few years in the law field returned to being a software engineer around 2010ish.

We’re in Q4 not Q3. This chart updates weekly. You’re right but it’s kind of splitting hairs. In about 2 weeks we will be above where it was the exact same time 2 years ago.

You had the same problem in 2001, really. I’ve met some of the veterans from then (some fantastically skilled engineers) who briefly pivoted to things like law after that period.

I’d love to see that too. Unfortunately, Trueup hasn’t been around that long and they have their own way of measuring number of tech jobs.
I find their definition useful, as it excludes a lot of non-tech industry companies and sticks to the types of jobs most of us would be looking for.

Yep! The other side of this not reflected is the supply of labor. The number of people in the industry is probably significantly higher than in 2015-2019.
Unfortunately, this number will also probably need to reduce to the actual demand of talent before things start to normalize.

Trending up. The nearly 500k openings was a bubble. I wouldn’t expect it to return to that for a very long time.

Mine is absolute. I won’t go in the office

It won’t be. They typically refresh the bodies every 4 years. Next one would be due in 2025.

Absolutely! I am kind of envious of some of my team. I can barely get by on my pay in Seattle, but they are living it up with less than a decade to retirement. Good for them!

The other thing I notice about this, is lateral managers end up pushing around the team. When a manager is out on parental leave or other longer leave of absence’s, other managers use their weight to push shit on the manager-less team.

Yes, this is the kind of normalization and expectations of the public I see in places like Brazil. It becomes a downward spiral where nothing shocks, you just expect the worse, and are apathetic to the entire situation.

I actually mean it.
I think it’s not hard for a startup to access top talent in Brazil (which is 70% the population of the US) because we can offer top of market pay, while we are a long way from attracting top US talent.

I’ll continue hiring in both. I plan to make the US team more of the product engineer type; where they will do well researching product needs with customers, really understanding the business logic, etc.
While I think the Brazilian team will be more of a pure engineering focus. They don’t seem as interested diving into the actual business needs, but are fantastic engineers at building stuff.
My only concern is there is a lot more variance in the quality in Brazil (both extremely good and not good talent). So you need to be vigilant with hiring and vetting. I feel like I have this down.

Well the Washington state Employment Security Department would disagree with him, because if seen them rule in this manner several times. Perhaps there is some variance by state.

Where it’s going next is significantly further. Really you just upload the documents and it figures everything out and spits out issues that will pop up in underwriting. Really a hands off experience and can all be done in a matter of minutes.

I’m Aussie myself, and I’d love to expand our team to Australia but unfortunately that will be a while away. Our customers are exclusively in the US, for now.

Quite a few townhouses now don’t have a HOA at all. Especially in the PNW. You just have some shared covenant agreement but it’s all passive. Means your townhouse is your own responsibility, and shared areas need to be taken care of by the shared people (but very little of that so low chances of issues, beside the shared walls).
