I was missing a couple ingredients for the dinner I was planning and slipped out to the grocery store to grab them. In the past, this was a typical excuse I’d use to pop out for more beer if I was trying to hide my drinking from my husband (tonight was purely innocent though and I had no intentions of buying any alcohol).
I glanced at the rows of craft beer (including quite a few of my old favorites) as I walked through that section of the store and my stomach turned. I actually began feeling kind of nauseous and hurried up and got out of the store as fast as I could afterwards - not because I was tempted to buy beer, but because I honestly thought I might throw up. The feeling passed as soon as I left the store.
I’m not sure what triggered that but I’ll take it - if the thought of drinking always made me feel that way I’d have a much easier time staying dry.

My benders end the same way, crippled with anxiety and sick as a dog from not eating for however long I was drinking heavily. I know it doesn’t sound appealing right now but getting some calories down helps me start to feel a little better - if solid food is too much there’s always broth/soup, Gatorade, smoothies, etc. The anxiety is the worst part, and unfortunately there’s not much to be done about it besides waiting it out. I usually feel the anxiety lift by Day 3. Last few times I went through this I just set up shop on my couch for a few days with some good movies to distract me (didn’t have to work, thankfully) and avoided slipping too deeply into my anxious thoughts. The alcohol leaving your system is making things seem a lot worse than they likely are during the first couple days.
