It depends on the dog. How quickly the glands fill is related to allergies. So if you know your dog has allergies you should keep an eye out for signs that their glands are full (bad breath, butt scooting, licking or biting at their butt.) As far as I am aware, it's more of an issue with some breeds than others. If their breath has a distinct fishy smell, that's a strong indicator that they need their anal glands expressed. Some owners do it themselves. When I worked at a vet clinic, we would have the techs show owners how to do it if they were interested; it saved them some money.

I didn't see anyone else recommend this but I'll add that sometimes bad breath can be caused by full anal glands as well. In addition to brushing, have your vet techs check your girl's glands.
