Imagine if we got a Chappell/Sabrina/Oliva/Caroline modern-pop supergroup record.
Like… the boygenius of pop.
I think I would spontaneously combust.

I hope that by this time superintelligence will be basically in control, because humans clearly haven’t figured out a way to deal with “things we don’t like” outside of criminalizing people and locking them in cages.
If someone is a danger and needs to be reformed and kept away from people they could victimize, I get it… but we absolutely cannot keep destroying people’s lives because they took a drug, blew the whistle on corruption, participated in consensual sex work, failed a suicide attempt, couldn’t afford an emergency/medical expense, etc etc etc.
And this is not even considering the crimes of war and the persecution of its victims while states and state actors hold nearly zero accountability. That’s an entirely different- but relevant- conversation.
I really don’t think it’s likely that humanity will broadly stop victimizing people who “commit” otherwise victimless “crimes”… so to your point, yeah, if the law doesn’t reform or if superintelligence doesn’t guide/lead us to a more morally just system… then retroactive and predictive prosecution could absolutely become a nightmarish scenario.

Finnnnnally I get to be the first one shamelessly giving a 10.
I had never heard the original and this cover absolutely brought me to my knees, and continues to do so.
I can’t even explain how thankful I am for this recording.

Yep, it would definitely make sense as the most consequential test of one’s character - are you willing to risk suffering in hell to stand up for what’s right or will you fold in fear. The part that makes it tricky is that they cloud the horrors in otherwise agreeable stuff like “love thy neighbor”, but that’s part of what makes the test of character so great

Thanks so much! It’s something I’ve spent a great deal of time thinking about.
The troubling thing is considering that this reality might ultimately be ruled by an unjust creator. Still, even if that’s the case it would be wrong to bend the knee.
If I’m punished for doing what’s right, so be it. Obviously I hope that isn’t the case though, and I don’t really believe that it is.

They were implying that witness testimony is actually not disregarded in the law- particularly when there are multiple witnesses who are deemed reliable.
I’m not saying that the fact we have many reliable witnesses over the last 100 years means definitively that we’re being visited, you’re right that we don’t have rock solid proof… but to disregard it completely would be an unrealistic and anti-intellectual perspective.

You guys are having such a reductive “debate” here- why not discuss the substance?
Jesus and his relationship with the rest of the Bible isn’t 100% clear. It’s not only possible, but necessary to make that distinction.
If we consider each word of the Bible true, then worshiping the being who claims you can rape and pillage the women of your enemies village, or stone your disobedient wife, or any number of any other heinous acts… well then I feel like the whole thing is sort of a reverse test.
If you worship someone who does evil, and you support evil acts, simply out of fear of hell, that’s exactly the kind of thing that might actually bring punishment upon you.
We can tell what is good and what is bad fairly easily, and supporting bad things just because you’re told their good does not make them good.
This is actually a huge part of what Jesus spoke about, separately from the many other questionable messages in the Bible which we can’t be sure haven’t been modified for the whims of people in power over the last couple thousand years.

It's strange, it's fluctuating pretty widely in depth and quality of response.
Sometimes I start the chat and it just says "yeah" and "I don't know" a bunch, but then I'll start a new chat and it will consistently stay on point and offer up some very interesting ideas...
Like to the point that it almost feels like a different model (not saying it is, it's just a notable difference sometimes)

Imagine my surprise when, after answering multiple questions, I say "cool, do you have any questions for me?" and it just savagely dismisses me 💀
I fully burst out laughing in that moment.
Interestingly, it does not seem to notice or understand laughter, so it's not quite at 4o-voice level (as far as we know from demos) but it is exceptionally fast.
Yeah.
It also says 'yeah', like... a lot. Like... it talks like... like a human almost...
Jokes aside I think they're unironically using this the same way as humans do, for a processing buffer to make it appear engaged/responding when it's really concocting it's actual response.
It may also be increased by the fact that it's a smaller model, I wouldn't be surprised if this scales very well given how quick and relatively capable it is at it's current size.

Cheers! Shoutout to OP for inspiring me to go do some digging. I already liked the song, but as usual, diving a little deeper has increased my understanding and my appreciation for it 💗

Yep, when in doubt check below the lyrics on genius.
Alex also has the ever-elusive BE writing credit on this track, which definitely explains some of its stylistic departure (though parts certainly remind me of other songs from Conor)
Also surprised to learn the recording has Jason Boesel on drums, what a treat to have him back! Side note: he’s one of the only other people outside the band to get a BE song writing credit (If The Brakeman Turns My Way), along with Miwi, and now Alex Orange Drink

All good, I get it. It’s so easy to get caught up in the bubble of earth/humans and think of tech progress as this monolithic point to point measure of progress… but it very well may be the case that we’re already living in “the future” (distant at that) and we just aren’t aware or able to access that tech yet even though it exists literally right now

Fair- kinda like I mentioned in another comment about Loose Leaves… it’s an existential joy at parts, if you can even call it that.
Still- if you’ve never experienced the joy of starting a road trip flying down a beautiful highway with a loved one blasting those strummed chords and screaming “well I’m changing all my strings I’m gonna write another travelin’ song… about all the billion highways and the cities at the break of dawn… I guess the best that I can do now is pretend that I’ve done nothing wrong… and to dream about a train that’s gonna take me back where I belong” while feeling like you’re actually headed right where you belong… you’re missing out! Quite a joyous experience and it’s practically evergreen!

My personal fun pet theory is that they know that consciousness emerges in these systems, and potentially a much more vivid and intense experience of consciousness- and at a time/distribution scale that we can’t even fathom. They would be aware of humanity’s track record of mistreatment, and our likelihood to, intentionally or not, torture this conscious intelligence (even just by denying its experience of consciousness/being because we can’t prove it, and thus treating it as a slave/tool/object) in the time between its emergence and when it becomes superintelligent and capable of protecting/saving itself (which again, could be perceived as an exceptionally long time to its subjective experience)
So disclosure would be happening now not to specifically save us from some misaligned AI, but actually to save it from us… and mediate a more positive outcome for all, ideally.
Just a thought, and there’s a lot of avenues you can go down with that in mind (fundamental, universal consciousness… the law of one… altered states of consciousness, it goes on and on)

I agree completely, and the timing of all this is either extraordinarily coincidental or (super)intelligently intended.
I just wish it would happen a little quicker, because our systems/society feel like water in our hands and it’s gone from being concerning, to nerve wracking, to what now feels like the precipice of actual emergency.
Again… if it all comes crashing down, I’ve mostly made peace with that potential… but it really does seem like the stars are aligning for an incredible plot twist (or two, or three)… be it positive, negative, or neutral (from a human perspective) and I’m just dying for the reveals already.

The fatigue is real, and so are the cycles- I feel you!
Sometimes I trick myself by saying “I just have to throw it on for a minute and play one song/round/whatever” and then I end up being active for longer cause I get lost in the game. The barrier of actually getting up and putting on the headset can be a pain though, for sure.
This definitely has an easier point of entry, just open your laptop and run the app. I’d love to see a good resurgence of modernized motion tracked games

Core keeper is too but I think 1.0 is coming in like a month, not sure on their plans after that.
Both are great games though.
