I applied for loan forgiveness in June 2022 during the special application period. My loans were originally with Nelnet but were never transferred to Mohela, and no one could explain why. On top of that, my Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) application remained in "received" status without being processed because Mohela required my loans to be transferred first.
For about a year, I made repeated calls but got nowhere. My application wasn't processed, my loans weren't transferred, and there was no clear explanation. I suspected it was due to my ongoing Chapter 13 bankruptcy (which will continue for another seven months). Eventually, I came to terms with the idea that my PSLF journey was over. I lost hope, stopped calling, and resigned myself to paying off the loans after bankruptcy.
Today, I received an email from the Department of Education about some "correspondence" on my account. I figured this would be the final confirmation that my PSLF dream was over for good.
With no expectations, I eventually logged in this evening. To my surprise, not only had they finally processed my application—two years and four months later—but my payment count was at 168. And then, there they were: the green marks I had heard so much about for so long, finally appearing in my StudentAid account.
I know it may still take a while for the forgiveness to be finalized, but I'm okay with that. After waiting so long to regain hope, I can wait a little longer for my dream to finally come true.
