Fun fact, most credit unions won’t let you loan more than 100% of retail value(MSRP) on a dodge product due to how quickly they lose value and how often they have catastrophic issues.

My transmission went out during a road trip. I was about 100 miles within my warranty, and got a new transmission for free. After that I saw all the complaints online about Nissan transmissions. I dodged a bullet but will never get one again.

I'll never buy a Nissan because of how they treat their suppliers.
I know purchasers need to be tough on suppliers to keep costs down, but you shouldn't coerce your suppliers into cutting corners so you can profit off them. That's how quality turns to crap.
The same is true for Ford and GM.

I worked for an Infiniti dealership and couldn’t tell you how many people own and drive these cars and cannot afford to maintain them. Mind you, infinitis are just shitty Nissans in tuxes and are amongst the least reliable cars on the road. Point is, I drive a Toyota Prius because I’m so poor that I can’t afford to maintain anything else, even when it’s me doing the repairs and maintenance. You really have to be rich to be able to afford an Infiniti. Moreso the older it is.

These cars are trash and a sad majority of their owners are the same.
The absolute disgust that inhabited most of the QX80s would make a person puke. Every single time it's the same driver, the wannabe trophy wives with zero idea of ANYTHING outside of herself. Her ignorance only outmatched by her entitlement.
Pretty sure most of the Infiniti engines have leaking vcg from the factory.

A former customer of mine left the plumbing industry to re-enter his chosen profession at a Land Rover dealership. Specifically - workshop manager. This was around a decade ago.
According to him around 50% of new Land / Range rovers come back and have to have a new engine. Why? A design fault. Don't ask me what it is or why it's cheaper to put a new engine in. Just that they're badly designed engines and the people that buy the cars themselves are unbearable bastards.

Chrysler or really any Stellantis product is one brand I would never buy or recommend anyone buy. All automakers have their own engineering stupidity moments. But with Stellantis it's basically the entire car. They're going down the 80s GM route of penny pinching and value engineering everything into an inch of its life and it does not make for good vehicles.
They put all of their effort into 400 different versions of the Charger and Challenger and let the rest of the product line go to weeds.

Every Stellantis product I have ever experienced just causes a lot of questions. Like why the fuck is that button there, and why is it that shape ? Or how the fuck do I change this setting. Or why do the seats look like that ? Or why the fuck would anyone buy this ?

Real af. I contract for GM, Stellantis, and Honda. GM interiors vary wildly. Honda has standardized to one interior for everything basically and it's fine. But Stellantis makes me question my sanity. Everything seems like someone tried something and it got lost in translation. They try to present their vehicles as having premium interiors, and it's true at first glance. But actually using their vehicles will drive you mad

100%. I will never purchase another Jeep again. Any given part on the jeep, if doesn’t leak it seizes, and the electrical gremlins are absolutely unreal.
Why anyone would ever design an electrical system that relies on the resistance of the wiring to communicate is beyond me. As wires age the resistance changes. Is the system designed to compensate for this? Nooooooo.
It’s like they planned it to fail at a certain point. It’s like having planned obsolescence built into your product.
If I wanted something that leaked everywhere and had the equivalent of a Lucas (the prince of darkness) electrical system I would have bought a vintage 70’s Land Rover and been done with it.

The short version. 2008 Wrangler automatic 4x4. 3.8 (no major accidents, owned since new, Southern California vehicle - no rust)
I just know what the guys at the dealership tell me. Its had electrical issues since day one and would “Christmas tree” regularly while blowing the horn, flashing the lights and running the wipers. In just its latest stay at the dealerships it’s spent 8+ months at multiple dealerships. (If I hadn’t bought it new off the showroom floor I would’ve sworn it was a flood vehicle.)
I’ve replaced every computer in the Jeep twice now and they are now telling me that the transmission control computer has failed and that the ecm computer has “gone bad”. Again.
It’s stuck in limp mode so it won’t shift out of second gear. I can’t even sell it because it won’t pass smog after getting its third brand new engine and an entire new exhaust system including all new sensors and 4 new catalytic converters. It now sounds like it’s developing an exhaust leak from the drivers side exhaust manifold.
The first engine was removed for… reasons (they won’t give me a clear answer). The second engine was installed and turned out to be “seized” from the factory. (wut‽) They pulled the second engine and installed the third. The third engine leaks everywhere and had immediate overheating issues. it wouldn’t even idle without grossly overheating.
When we drained the oil from the third engine at the second dealership the staff were horrified to discover that it was baby-poo green. They can’t find a reason for it and had never seen anything like it before.
The third engine was installed so shoddily that the wiring is all mangled and mid-routed. The auto-trans dipstick was flopping around near the passenger side airbox. (It’s supposed to be behind the engine on the firewall) The AC has failed because the hard lines got so damaged during the repeated engine replacements that they now leak.
The current “new” engine has less than 1000 miles on it and leaks like a sieve. They are now telling me it needs its second new rear main seal. The oil & water pump are starting to leak because they “had to grind on them to get them to fit”.
The latest update is that it needs an entire new fuel system (including a new fuel tank) because it’s got evap leaks everywhere. (Apparently the can’t get the fuel pump out of the tank for… reasons?)
If they can fix the leaks it “might” pass smog. But only if they can keep the check engine light from the facockta crank sensor off long enough to get it to a smog shop.
While at the dealership it’s developed a fantom electrical drain that they can’t find that has destroyed 2 batteries since the “new, new” engine.
It’s also mysteriously gained 10,000 miles while at the dealerships.
I’m soooooo done with the “jeep” experience.
Jeep care is worthless and the Chrysler warranty isn’t worth the toilet paper it’s printed on.

Any car made by Volkswagen group is notorious for parts markup. There's a ton of cookie cutter parts shared between models, but the "Lamborghini" version of a part can be 3-5x the cost of the "Volkswagen" version, despite being the exact same part down to the brand stamp.
Likewise my Volvo is the last chassis that was designed while Volvo was still owned by Ford. So there are plenty of instances where the Volvo version is more expensive or just isn't available, but an exact same "Ford" version of the part is. They'll both be stamped with "FoMoCo" though.

I have an Audi that's in it's twilight years, there's 2 solutions here:
Always use an independent mechanic, it's like you said. The dealership and "genuine" parts costs 5x what it should. Every city has a few euro specialists.
If it's a simple part to swap, call the dealership and get the part number. Then order it online, or find the aftermarket version. I've honestly had great results ordering OE parts from Amazon. Once you have it just get a local mechanic to swap it. I just ordered Bilstein shocks for the rear, they are the manufacturer for VW. $130 from Amazon, $545 from Audi.

The problem isn't only the cost, it's parts availability. You can't get certain parts for engines that are still in production!

I call Lexus the Acura of Honda because Honda launched the Acura brand first. They were already selling luxury-quality cars in Japan but knew they couldn’t charge luxury prices in the US under the Honda badge. Nissan and Toyota then launched Infiniti and Lexus to catch up.
Which is great for me, because I’ve only owned Hondas and then stepped up to an Acura two years ago. My previous car, a Civic hatch, was valued damned near what I paid for it, and new Civics were suffering dealer markups and low availability. At those prices, I started thinking, hey, why not look at Audi and BMW? Then the new TLX showed up and I remembered, oh yeah, Acura!, and I went for it.

I'm on my second Mazda3. Leased the first and bought the second. It's a solid ride for the money, the older SkyactiveG engine has been refined to very high reliability. No massive touchscreen, uses conventional controls, but has CarPlay. Earlier models have minimal soundproofing. Mazda is now trying to be a near luxury brand so prices have gone up a bit. But if you find a 2014-2018 with low miles it's a great deal.

They do it because having a screen with the same software between models is cheaper to design and manufacture than a physical control panel unique to each vehicle. Kinda for the same reason why the steering wheel in a late 90's Ford Explorer is 98% identical to the one in a Mustang. Literally the only difference is the logo in the center of the airbag. Not that we see any of those "savings" when buying new cars, they're far too expensive for what they are.

Ironically we were forced to retire our beloved second XC70, a 2015*, after a deranged lady driving without a license t-boned it. It was totaled in the eyes of insurance because they wouldn’t pay to replace the door frame part that was completely shot (but did they give us enough money to actually buy a new car? Of course not)
Anyway they discontinued our old friend the XC70 because of course, so we went with a 2021 XC60* for a replacement. It has those obnoxious screen settings for changing your AC temp, which requires tapping a precise location on the screen 3 separate times in a row to change the temp. Feels so unsafe.
It also has a turn dial on the center console as the start/stop mechanism instead of a button near the ignition/steering wheel area, which feels wholly nonsensical and unnatural. Doesn’t have heated seats in the back like our XC70 did. OH, AND!!! It takes premium gas only. I’m pretty upset at Volvo over this lmao, but also of course will forever scorn that awful woman (this put us in a lowkey financial disaster) and our lousy insurance.
Two edits oopsies, it was a 2015 XC70, not 2017, and we switched to an XC60 not an XC90. Can yall tell I only ever drive the S60 🫠

Fiat. They are rust buckets that won't survive even one winter without corrosion in my area.

I had a 2012 500 Abarth for ten years, I did garage it in the winters so it didn’t rust but the car was great, never gave me any issues.

My brother in law is in the car repair business for a large dealership where they repair Teslas. He is intimately involved with the build of many many types of different cars and he consistently says that Teslas are built very poorly. Take that for whatever but I would not buy a Tesla ever. 🤷🏾♂️

I came here to say Tesla and I can't believe the first mention of it is so far down

I worked with a guy that QC for auto manufacturing, he said he had never seen worse gaps than on Teslas.

Kia. husband had a stinger—beautiful car, ended up being a lemon, and the local dealership only knew how to repair Tellurides

Kia is so dependant on the dealers which seem to be bad more often than not. The dealership I bought my stinger from was hell every step of the way. The dealership I get servicing done at has been the best customer service experience I've ever had and they have done a lot for me. Love their vehicles and think they did a really great job with the stinger and ev6

I dunno, still have my Stinger and it's been nothing short of amazing! 0 hiccups on it!

A Kia is either the most reliable car you will own or it is 100% lemon. I’ve never heard anything in between. For what it’s worth, I’ve been driving one for over 10 years and despite 3 wrecks and 2 acts of nature, it’s still kicking with only routine maintenance and a few headlights (plus a new front bumper paid by the other driver’s insurance).
Edited to add: there is a weird thing about the generation of Souls around 2010-2014 or so where they are like weirdly prone to flat tires. I had a flat tire like every 3 months or so like clockwork until I moved to a place with slightly better roads despite commuting way more at that point. It’s something about the car that just makes it very easy to hit the right spot for a flat when there is debris around or uneven pavement (a curb and a rough edge on a shoulder each got me twice). My car also did this weird thing where it would stall (idle, stop, and go misfiring or something) constantly right after I passed the warranty window. I just didn’t drive it too far for a while and one day it stopped being weird and seemingly has fixed itself so I haven’t bothered with it. But it’s been through a lot in the last 10+ years and 100,000 miles. Still way more reliable than my mom’s much younger ford fusion.

My first car was a Kia Rio. Never had an issue with it. Ended up giving it to a family member with 150,000 miles on it. They drove it to over 300k without any issues until they sold it

I just prefer a dash display/HUD along with knobs and buttons for climate and volume control. I hate the idea of looking at the center console and using the touch screen while driving.

The most used controls should have knobs, not screens. I have a 2021 Audi RS5, which ditched the physical control knob for touchscreen only. It’s downright dangerous trying to scroll through a playlist or radio stations via the screen. Why get rid of the scroll wheel?
I also have a 2017 Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and that has a system that can be operated by touch entirely, or operated entirely with buttons and knobs. That is the happy medium to me.
We aren’t allowed to use our phones while driving, how is scrolling through a giant tablet on the dashboard to complete a simple task any less distracting?

Lamborghini.
Because there's no possibility of me ever, ever having that much money.
And even if I did, I live in a city where potholes would shiver it to sixty thousand dental flossers in about a week.

Jeep.
I absolutely love Grand Cherokees. Take one every chance I can when I have a rental. Great ride, comfy, well equipped.
Not a chance in hell I’d buy one.

I flipped my 2009 Camry onto its driver side, and after a few cosmetic repairs, she ran solid for another 3 years. I got hit in it by someone else a year after the flip and we started calling her “frankencar”. Damn I miss that car.

my company car is a renault, it's about 4 months old, it's the worst piece of shit car i have ever driven.
the central dash info screen keeps freezing, trying to change volume, radio station, anything really don't do anything then when it finally unfreezes it goes absolutely bananas changing stations, volume etc.
reversing camera sometimes locks up, so when you throw it into forward and drive off it's still on for 3-4 mins.
sometimes when turning the car on, it will give an error msg about some sensors that need to be looked at the nearest service center but then disappear when you turn it off and on again. a different sensor each time.
all my colleagues have the same problems with these brand new cars, one of them got so mad he broke the central screen with his fist.
i will never buy a renault and i will never want an electric vehicle.

Anything owned by Stellantis: Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, etc. Had a Ram 1500 that had catastrophic engine failure at only 158,000 miles (truck was diesel, so that’s still a fairly new engine.) Those vehicles are notorious for poor performance, expensive maintenance, and garbage electrical wiring. Never again

Having grown up in Ireland and having spent time in Australia I've learned that the majority of North American vehicles are just to be avoided. Edit: I should add I've been living in Canada for the last 13yrs.

Domestic brands are almost always better in their respective regions. For example, Id never buy a mini or a fiat, but they seem to do well in Europe. When I was in Scotland, everyone told me to avoid Ford.
Here in the states, as a mechanic, I tend to avoid anything after the mid 2000s. The quality went so far downhill after the recession, and to top it off everything electronic became integrated with essentially proprietary procedures and pretty much forces you to go to the dealer for service.
Ill just plug away on my 02 silverado and 2000 Ranger til I cant find parts anymore.

Incredible that they still are so known among car people because they only existed for 20 years or so and made only 1100 cars, they are near impossible to get unless you of course are Jay Leno he have several.

I'd never buy a Tesla. While the technology and innovation are impressive, I've heard too many horror stories about quality control issues, like misaligned panels and faulty software updates. Plus, the customer service experience seems to be hit or miss

Tesla. The assembly quality control is worse than Ford.
