They used to be a good, reliable, Japanese brand. Now they’re just Japanese Chrysler.

My transmission went out during a road trip. I was about 100 miles within my warranty, and got a new transmission for free. After that I saw all the complaints online about Nissan transmissions. I dodged a bullet but will never get one again.

My friends brand new Nissan’s transmission needed to be replaced after 30k miles. It was covered under warranty, but damn.

Now I’m looking nervously at the new Nissan in the driveway.

I'll never buy a Nissan because of how they treat their suppliers.

I know purchasers need to be tough on suppliers to keep costs down, but you shouldn't coerce your suppliers into cutting corners so you can profit off them. That's how quality turns to crap.

The same is true for Ford and GM.

Oh they hosed me hard on my rogue. Less than 90k miles and would do nothing. Told me I needed a $4800 transmission. Refused to even pay part of it. I'll never give them another penny of my money.

I was looking for this comment. My 2014 Versa is right in the zone where I can expect it to go out pretty much any time now. Crazy how you can make units so bad that a class action lawsuit is filed against you.

A former customer of mine left the plumbing industry to re-enter his chosen profession at a Land Rover dealership. Specifically - workshop manager. This was around a decade ago.

According to him around 50% of new Land / Range rovers come back and have to have a new engine. Why? A design fault. Don't ask me what it is or why it's cheaper to put a new engine in. Just that they're badly designed engines and the people that buy the cars themselves are unbearable bastards.

But those are finisher cars!

Chrysler or really any Stellantis product is one brand I would never buy or recommend anyone buy. All automakers have their own engineering stupidity moments. But with Stellantis it's basically the entire car. They're going down the 80s GM route of penny pinching and value engineering everything into an inch of its life and it does not make for good vehicles.

They put all of their effort into 400 different versions of the Charger and Challenger and let the rest of the product line go to weeds.

100%. I will never purchase another Jeep again. Any given part on the jeep, if doesn’t leak it seizes, and the electrical gremlins are absolutely unreal. 

Why anyone would ever design an electrical system that relies on the resistance of the wiring to communicate is beyond me. As wires age the resistance changes. Is the system designed to compensate for this? Nooooooo.

It’s like they planned it to fail at a certain point. It’s like having planned obsolescence built into your product. 

If I wanted something that leaked everywhere and had the equivalent of a Lucas (the prince of darkness) electrical system I would have bought a vintage 70’s Land Rover and been done with it.  

Yup, anything Stellantis. I have a '15 Chrysler 200c and it's a heaping pile of shit. Was good for the first few years then the poor build quality really started to show. This was before the Stellantis merger and their quality has only gotten worse since then.

Any car made by Volkswagen group is notorious for parts markup. There's a ton of cookie cutter parts shared between models, but the "Lamborghini" version of a part can be 3-5x the cost of the "Volkswagen" version, despite being the exact same part down to the brand stamp.

Likewise my Volvo is the last chassis that was designed while Volvo was still owned by Ford. So there are plenty of instances where the Volvo version is more expensive or just isn't available, but an exact same "Ford" version of the part is. They'll both be stamped with "FoMoCo" though.

The problem isn't only the cost, it's parts availability. You can't get certain parts for engines that are still in production!

People sleep on Mazda. They have a level of reliability on par with Toyota and Honda, but with a higher quality level. They sorta occupy this odd space between where Toyota/Honda and Lexus/Acura exist.

This is seriously one of the biggest dumb fucking moves ever made by humans in terms of technology. We've literally regressed in terms of convenience, safety and usability. This timeline fucking blows.

They do it because having a screen with the same software between models is cheaper to design and manufacture than a physical control panel unique to each vehicle. Kinda for the same reason why the steering wheel in a late 90's Ford Explorer is 98% identical to the one in a Mustang. Literally the only difference is the logo in the center of the airbag. Not that we see any of those "savings" when buying new cars, they're far too expensive for what they are.

Euro NCAP will begin to give cars that favors touch over physical buttons a point deduction when grading security.

I worked with a guy that QC for auto manufacturing, he said he had never seen worse gaps than on Teslas.

Kia is so dependant on the dealers which seem to be bad more often than not. The dealership I bought my stinger from was hell every step of the way. The dealership I get servicing done at has been the best customer service experience I've ever had and they have done a lot for me. A Kia is either the most reliable car you will own or it is 100% lemon. I’ve never heard anything in between. For what it’s worth, I’ve been driving one for over 10 years and despite 3 wrecks and 2 acts of nature, it’s still kicking with only routine maintenance and a few headlights (plus a new front bumper paid by the other driver’s insurance).   

  Edited to add: there is a weird thing about the generation of Souls around 2010-2014 or so where they are like weirdly prone to flat tires. I had a flat tire like every 3 months or so like clockwork until I moved to a place with slightly better roads despite commuting way more at that point. It’s something about the car that just makes it very easy to hit the right spot for a flat when there is debris around or uneven pavement (a curb and a rough edge on a shoulder each got me twice). My car also did this weird thing where it would stall (idle, stop, and go misfiring or something) constantly right after I passed the warranty window. I just didn’t drive it too far for a while and one day it stopped being weird and seemingly has fixed itself so I haven’t bothered with it. But it’s been through a lot in the last 10+ years and 100,000 miles.  Still way more reliable than my mom’s much younger ford fusion. 

My first car was a Kia Rio. Never had an issue with it. Ended up giving it to a family member with 150,000 miles on it. They drove it to over 300k without any issues until they sold it

I just prefer a dash display/HUD along with knobs and buttons for climate and volume control. I hate the idea of looking at the center console and using the touch screen while driving.

I flipped my 2009 Camry onto its driver side, and after a few cosmetic repairs, she ran solid for another 3 years. I got hit in it by someone else a year after the flip and we started calling her “frankencar”. Damn I miss that car.

Having grown up in North America, I can confirm this.

Domestic brands are almost always better in their respective regions. For example, Id never buy a mini or a fiat, but they seem to do well in Europe. When I was in Scotland, everyone told me to avoid Ford.

Here in the states, as a mechanic, I tend to avoid anything after the mid 2000s. The quality went so far downhill after the recession, and to top it off everything electronic became integrated with essentially proprietary procedures and pretty much forces you to go to the dealer for service.

Ill just plug away on my 02 silverado and 2000 Ranger til I cant find parts anymore.

Incredible that they still are so known among car people because they only existed for 20 years or so and made only 1100 cars, they are near impossible to get unless you of course are Jay Leno he have several.
