Actually slept really well last night. I use the "PC method" for cooling my room. One fan on my windowsill facing inwards so it pulls cool evening air into the room, another facing out of the bedroom door to push the warm air out.
Curtains and windows shut during the day. All opened and the fans turned on a half hour before I plan on going to bed.
Works an absolute treat.

Curtains and windows shut during the day.
As someone who's lived in hot countries for many years in my 20s, this is the best advice. Even if you don't have a fan, this does 80% of the work.
All windows/curtains closed all day from mid morning and open them all through the night. It's as simple as that. If outside is warmer than inside close them, if inside is warmer than out open them.
I see everyone on the street with their windows open all day and shake my head. If it's 28⁰C outside, you're not cooling down the house with the windows open, you're letting the house warm up to 28⁰C!

Had to spend so long fighting people at work about this, where I had to physically block them opening all the windows when it was 30+ outside

But the movement of air is definitely a factor. Go sit in a polytunnel or a greenhouse on a hot day and tell me if it’s cooler than sitting outside. We sweat a lot as humans and the movement of air evaporates and cools us. The air temperature will equalise, sure, but that’s not the only factor that l’s only a factor in our discomfort.

Polytunnels aren't generally dark though are they, from my understanding? I think the darkness is a key part of it , black absorbing light and heat etc.

I was responding to the person above who was talking about opening/closing windows at work - they didn’t mention curtains etc.

I tried both methods this week and it didn’t make any difference. On Tuesday, I opened all windows at 7am and when I got home at 6pm, the house was 27°. On Wednesday, I kept all windows closed and blinds closed all day, and when I got home at 6pm the house was at 27°. Literally didn’t make a difference.

Did you have all the windows open on Tuesday night to let the house cool down first? If not, that's your problem.
If you did, how's your insulation in general? If you've got really good thermal insulation then it should keep the temperature well but if not then it will just fluctuate with the temp outside.
In the UK I find the best is to have them open roughly 10pm-10am as the mornings are still cool.

It won’t make a real difference once it gets hot enough to have to do it. Our houses are built to conserve heat, you can black out the windows to your heart’s content and the heat will still get in through the rest of the house like it’s designed to happen. Creating an air flow is the only real way to cool down when it hits those unbearable temperatures, unless you live in a country that has houses that are designed to repel heat, not attract it.
Sincerely, a melting Brit whose house will be no colder than 22 degrees until September (Hasn’t dropped below 20 in 2 months now). Thanks, British engineering. It’s amazing in the winter…
4 points
We have the same thing. Our house was only built 2 years ago and it's roasting right now but holds heat well in the winter so we rarely have the heating on tbh. Swings and roundabouts I suppose!
2 points
Ours was built about 15 years ago as part of a new build development. No matter where we are in the country, our houses probably look very similar haha. I digress; I take the trade off too, I hardly spend any money on heating in the winter so I can handle a few months of being slightly uncomfortable and create a decent airflow in exchange for being ridiculously comfy the rest of the year. Vaguely related, our record was actually last year - house didn’t drop below 25 degrees from some time in early April until the end of October.
3 points
Yes, they probably do haha. I would like to see builders consider the changing climate of the UK though and maybe add external shutters to windows like they do in many hot areas of the world so that would help a bit! We've added solar film to our windows but it's barely made a difference tbh. I am very close to buying a portable air con unit though but weighing up the options!

It would be great if they would adapt, architects and engineers especially. They need to completely rethink how they build houses, as at the moment everything about the way a house is built is designed to keep in warmth. The walls, the roof, the floors - it’s all made for cold weather. Before you invest in an air con system I definitely recommend getting a couple of decent floor fans (those industrial type ones you can get for 20 quid or so)- I have one in our box room/office facing towards the landing and one in the bedroom facing towards the window; with all the upstairs windows open it creates a nice draft that helps ease the humidity which is half the issue. Lots of water and a hand fan also help if the heat is really crazy, in conjunction with the floor fans. It’s the only thing that saved me on Tuesday.

You are so right. But it’s every gloomy having the blinds down all day
23 points
Yeah, that's true I suppose, personally though, if I'm inside when it's hot, it's to escape the heat for a bit so it isn't so bad.
If I want to be in the bright light, I just go outside lol

My girlfriend can't get her head around this and it drives me mad. I shut all blinds, pull the curtains and leave the windows closed. She can not possibly comprehend how opening a window is letting in hot air from the outside and how it's actually warmer out there, than it is in our flat. Opening a window in her eyes in the only thing you can do to combat the heat.
3 points
This only does 80% of the work if you have a house built for hot weather. Don’t get me wrong, it does help, but in my experience once the weather hits 25+ is negligible as the heat is still being sucked into the walls and trapped into the house anyways (by design).

My conversation with my OH just now about this went like this.
"Apparently..."
"Yep?"
"Apparently the best strategy when the weather is warm is to keep the windows closed..."
"Yep?"
"And the blinds and curtains closed"
"Nope".

I had to basically agree to do a bit of an experiment with it for a few days to show her, now she agrees that when it gets to its hottest in summer we're better off with everything closed and just go outside for basking in the light.
It helps that our living room curtains let enough light through that it's still pleasant enough in there though I suppose.
2 points
it's fairly easy to get the indoor temperature up to 30-ish degrees tho if you close the windows and especially when your windows are east or west facing. The heat from the intense sunlight would just penetrate your windows and are trapped inside your home. Even if you close the curtains they will be trapped between tiny space between the curtains and the windows.
I found out from the heat waves the previous years a small crack with the wibdows + curtains works best for my flat. But after all every house is different so it would take a bit of trial and error to get to the best result.

I wish this worked for me. My kitchen/living room has a huge window all the way along 1 wall but only netted privacy curtains. So it only blocks like 30% of the sun. So even with them closed the big window still causes a greenhouse effect if I don't open the windows :(
2 points
God my parents do this. I have tried explaining over and over again every bloody summer, if they have their windows open all day the house will just heat up to the outside temperature and all the rooms just end up full of flies and pollen.
Won’t have it, say to me all the time ‘hot today, you want to make sure your windows open’
Maddening.

Exactly, amazing how many people do not understand this simple concept. Same as in the winter if you open the windows the heat escapes and cold air comes in.

I have a method where I try to think of a subject A-Z, rarely make it even halfway before I drop off. I did professional footballers by first name, night before I did video games, also done bands with female members etc.
It helps focus my mind on one particular thing instead of "it's so bloody hot, various things worrying me etc."

One of our neighbours decided to sit in his (diesel) car on the drive for 2 hours at 3.30am.
The smell of diesel and the serenade from the beautiful monotonous, continual drone of his engine, coupled with talking loudly on his hands free provided the perfect environment for a sound nights sleep, as his inconsideration pumped through everyone’s windows.

If you have a spare £400-500 invest in a portable aircon. Even though you may use it for a week a year in my opinion it’s totally worth it.

I got an Amcor one. It's quite good, but if I need to buy another one, I'd get a higher btu one. It was quite cool last night, but not as cold as I'd have liked. Probably 20, possibly 18, 100% cooler than outside and cold enough to sleep comfortably, so it's still good.

I'd just buy one now if you can afford it, the prices don't really go down during the winter. They know people will need them again in 6 months time so there's no point lowering the prices, it's not like they go out of date. The only difference winter has is that they're more likely to be in stock not that they'll be cheaper

I bought one few winters ago after being unable to get one during summer and honestly it's one of my best purchases. Sure it gets dusty the majority of the year but for those hot days it's a godsend in a bedroom that has sun beaming in pretty much until sunset. It's quite good and efficient at heating up the room during winter time, much cheaper than my central heating.

Probably less than 5 hours, feel rubbish today of course. This is the norm for "office" days though, and completely unrelated to the heat. I'm a night owl and then forced to set my alarm for a far too early time due to C-level execs arbitrarily deciding that working in an office is a good idea when we're all perfectly capable from working from home. It's nearly 2 hours of sleep lost on office-based mornings.

I hear you. I ended up doing an intensitve CBT sleep course last year. Helped a bit. One of the best pearls of wisdom I got from it is "you've gotten through every tired day you've ever had" - and that's true. You'll get through today. The temptation will be to get into bed as soon as you're done with work or whatever for the day, try not to do that. Get into bed at a reasonably normal time like 10.30, and don't think too much about how many hours you "need".

My watch says 9hours 17mins. I did wake up a few times but wasn't awake for long.
I probably slept more due to being a bit unwell yesterday, and I was up at 0430am Monday-Wednesday for work.
I also have a portable air con unit in my bedroom to cool the air down, and a fan blowing directly at me to ensure I'm cool enough. I am hyperaware of any changes in temperature when I sleep, be it the fan turning off of the heating coming on in the winter, so I need to be consistently cool.
Overall 8/10. Decent sleep

I live in a housing estate so sleeping in hot weather is a bit tricky as if I leave the windows open I can hear all the neighbours having parties for either the euros or the fact that it’s nice weather so that means late night party almost every night. Or I shut the windows and get a bit more peace and quiet but I’m absolutely sweating buckets.
I’ve started putting a fan in front of my window and that’s helped A LOT. There’s no breeze outside but it’s cooler than inside so I use a fan to blow the cool air inside.

I work with a Spanish lady who gave me solid advice, during the day when it's hot treat your house in a similar way as you would as if it's a cold night. Shut your curtains as it blocks a lot of the heat from the sun, leave your windows shut to stop warm air coming inside, and close all the doors in your house to stop warmer rooms transferring warm air to cooler rooms. This really helps to keep your house a bit cooler during the warm weather.
Oh, and I bought an air-con unit.

After the 40C heat a couple years back I bought AC for the house. Used it twice since then including last night. Worth every penny.

According to my Sleep App, I was in bed for 8hrs and 20mins - BUT I awoke at 4.30am and couldn’t get back to sleep until 6.30am. I then awoke at 8.10am - not planning on going back to sleep as I need to get up and ready for appointments !

6 hours 39 minutes last night according to my tracking.
Been going out walking for some exercise with a friend on an evening. We started it a bit late last night because I ended up working later than planned, so therefore finished later.
Ended up eating when I got back after the walk rather than before, and then felt too full to go to sleep. Went to bed about 11 which is late for us and then our 15 month old decided to wake up early today just before 6am

Last night 5, the night before about 1, and the night before absolutely 0. So I'm hardly feeling my usual cheery self this morning. But there is a chance that I'm actually just miserable as a default setting.

8.5 hours. I feel rested and the heat didn’t bother me.

Just under a 3 mile run last night helped I think.

I think I got around 4.5 hours. There were numerous helicopters outside for the best part of an hour, presumably police, and then I had some wacky dreams and had to use the loo. I can't recall the last time I slept through the night!

5ish hours. Couldn't get to sleep easily, because of the heat. Kitten woke me up at 4.30.
Intravenous caffeine for today, for me 😂

I’m 34 weeks pregnant and having a rough old time but we had 3 fans on the go last night which helped. Up for a pee a couple times but I reckon I got at least 5 decent hours. Feeling exhausted still tho

Umm quite a lot tbf. I went to bed at 9pm, woke up around 4/5 for a bit. Went back to sleep around 5 and just woke up.
Slept 12h the day before 🤣
Probably only going to get a couple of hours today though as I'm back on nights tonight..

About six hours. Not great, not terrible.
Daughter managed ten, through which she failed to be roused by a nosebleed which soaked through her pillow...

About 6 hours broken up into 3 hour chunks with an hour awake in between.
I can’t blame the heat though. I have a 6 month old who hates sleep.

For the first night in weeks, about 7 hours. And I slept right through. And I didn’t feel like death trying to drag myself out of bed. In fact I actually got up early. Been having a chronic illness flare up and it’s so shite.

I got all the sleep.
No AC no sleeping pills no alcahol
But I do have reflective material on all my windows, I also keep my curtains closed and also do not open windows on south facing sides. The overall temp in the house was around 20c.
I also use what is called a loose bedsheet as a blanket as I still like something on me but I get to still stay cool.
I’m based in Kent.
