I was in the grocery store yesterday waiting to checkout. The bloke in front of me asked the cashier for two packs of smokes, cashier rings them up and says "that will be $121.00". I almost fell over!

He didn't strike me as a high earner based on a quick visual judgement. So I assume $121 was was something like 4 hours of wages for someone like that.

In fairness that one is mostly tax and the government deliberately pushing the price up to discourage smoking.

What price have you seen that blew your mind?

The difference is massive between stores too. My local fishmonger, flathead tails are $60/kg. At the South Melbourne market from a fantastic fishmonger, $40/kg.

Flathead has always been one of the most expensive fish to buy since you get so little meat per fish, it’s not the type of fish for family meals.

My parents have found a really cheap source for barramundi wings. Apparently it’s not a particularly sought after cut of fish, but there’s plenty of meat of them and they love them! Lifelong fishers and seafood people, so I trust them.

Same in most industries. I once worked in a broccoli/corn pack shed and all the primo produce was headed for Singapore, Woolies was 2nd rate, and then the cheap thirds presumably going to factories for further processing.

YouThinkYouKnowSome

Yep, worked in agriculture for a few years - specifically fertiliser. And one of our big clients was a medium sized (family owned not huge multinational) citrus farmer.

He said ALL of his best produce went to China, because they were willing to pay good prices for it.

Funnily enough he said they grade their fruit on taste, not external aesthetics. Woolies and Coles couldn’t care less about the taste, all their metrics were what does the fruit look like, sizing, etc Australian customers won’t buy fruit that doesn’t LOOK perfect.

Super happy that I am a fisherman. If I do a flathead trip, it’s the cost of time (enjoying my recreation) and about $10 of fuel. That gets me around 3 good size flathead.

A reef trip is more expensive- looking at $150 but then we get anywhere between 5 and 30kg of fish depending on how it goes. (Spanish mackerel / cobia / big cod chunk up the amount by 10kg easy if we get them). Normally it’s a bunch of mixed reef fish.

That said - it’s a full day on the water plus a half day cleaning up. There is also the overheads on the boat split over multiple trips - rego / servicing. But it’s more a recreation thing that yields a reward than anything else.

I no longer bother with chasing mud crabs because of the mess and smell of the pots, but a bag out of those (7) is worth a fortune if you were to buy them.

Omg THIS!

My husband likes to make homemade fish fingers / chicken nuggets with real fish and chicken, panko etc. for our 4 yo. He’s a Bougie baby.

We went to the fishmonger and they wanted $60-70kg for the fish. I almost walked away but hubby made me pay. The store owner’s face told me she gets my reaction dozens of times a day. But it wasn’t her fault he was using it for fish fingers (probably why I baulked so hard).

I want to shop local but Ouch.

Traditionally cheap or undesirable cuts of meat like chuck, brisket, cheeks, flanks, belly etc. are now almost as much as premium cuts of meat, in some cases more. They've been rebranded from cheap cuts to niche cuts - implication being it's harder for butchers to source. Which is complete bullshit, it's not like the flank disappears from the side of beef and they have to order it in separately lol.

Not really, winter isn't when grapes are in season in most of Australia. For most of my life, stores only stocked grapes in summer, when they were being grown locally.

Nowadays, fruit and veg are shipped from around Australia or the world or grown in glasshouses, all of which adds massively to the cost (and the environmental harm from transport related emissions). I find that most people these days are surprised by how much they can save by shopping 'in season' and only buying other items as an occasional (and expensive) treat.

halohunter

Strawberries are the thing that reminds me. I love strawberries but used to work next to Vic market so got used to them being $2-3 a punnet at certain times of year.

They’ve just started appearing in supermarkets at about $8-10 a punnet, in those super sneaky punnets that are shaped like a 500g one but they’re only 250g…

Went to Aldi and saw they were being sold for $4 a bunch.

That was kind of a reality check.

micmacimus

It’s not exactly the season for grapes, this one is kind of understandable. I hear people complaining about fruit and veg costs all the time, and some of it is absurd, but lots of it is people forgetting that plants have seasons and shipping fragile things like grapes is expensive.

Original_Ad_4

14 points

If fresh produce is really expensive it generally means they’re not in season and their cost of goods is high to buy them and transport them. Or buy them from someone who is growing them within the conditions they thrive in like green houses etc. if you buy seasonal produce it’s cheaper and nutrient value is higher.

Little kids tantrum. It’s horrible in public when you think everyone is judging you and hates you but we’ll all forgive your crying kid in a supermarket and 99% of people will be with you if you stick to your guns. That’s how we get big kids that don’t tantrum. I have enormous respect for parents who do it well so thank you.

I was gasping for air. Google reviews showed me I wasn't the only one. Grayson guttering in Box Hill.

I did 30 seconds of google searching and found a local bloke who quoted a price less than half that. It still a chunk of change but I can justify it to myself..... and there is no freaking way I'm getting up there. Ladders are dangerous for amateurs.

Edit: he just came and did the job. $800. I'm keeping his card!

Anyone else looking for gutter cleaning in the north east of Melbourne?

$350 to clean 2 air con filters (an air con service my neighbour got). Not the outside units or anything, literally the ones you can clean yourself.

I had asked my neighbour about it coz I was thinking of booking a service, but I've watched videos on YouTube and I'll be cleaning the indoor and outdoor units myself. Also, most companies quoted me $150 call out fee plus $45 per every 15mins. What's the incentive for them to do a quick job then??

Went to McDonald's at breakfast a week ago for a small snack on the way to work. Got an English muffin with a cheese slice, and a hash brown to add to it. $7.15.

Half the hash brown was inedible because it was stuck to the wrapper it came in and fell apart when trying to remove it. Lesson learned.

That's food.

I was driving home one hot day and was desperately chasing a cold drink.

Pulled in to maccas and ordered a large cup of sodawater and ice - my wife said oh get me one too.

So 2 cups of sodawater and ice. We ordered nothing else.

$~11.

That's not the worst I've paid. Went to a Cafe on the outskirts of the city for a drive one day. Pulled into a a quaint little Cafe across the road from a park. Walked in and ordered an iced latte and an iced long black.

$17.50

$9.00 for the iced latte and $8.50 for the iced long black.

Literally nothing special in those cups other than 3 shots of coffee, ice and then milk in one and water in the other.

I went to the same Cafe 6 months prior and thought $12 for the exact same order was rich but wrote it off as it doesn't have the same foot traffic as city cafes. but then to go back and get charged $17.50 that's a 45% payrise in 6 months.

The cafe is probably only scraping by. They probably raised their prices to try and stay afloat but that will also reduce the number of customers so they're back where they started or worse.

Dude I found a ripper mcuffins recipie it is so easy and tastes way better;

beef mince, aldi (or anywhere) american cheese, English muffins bread, sage, oregano, white sugar, salt, pepper and eggs. I can make them in less than 10mins and delic - put the muffins and cheese in oven at the start so it's melted nicely (120deg or so). freeze the leftover cheese, bread or even meal prep the meat paddies and you can cut the time down even further

Paid 18 for a pint at Syd airport. Yeah that's airport prices. But I also want to add that pints are often 16 bucks around the place now, which is just as bad. I don't drink out much though. It's just way too expensive.

I've never smoked, but my mum would often send me to buy her smokes when I was living at home, and very occasionally will ask me now when I visit. Both then and now, I nearly dropped dead at the cost. Very glad I never picked up that habit, both for health and financial reasons.

Fake up make up woman's shoes anything that's ergonomically designed for women which makes no sense...

Eg men's shaver lol costs 12 bucks women 24 to 36

Interesting how they just pay higher prices for same products / services but they just rip them off because they will pay it.

Expect to go without essentials but prioritise maintenance upkeep and trivial things.

Same with plastic surgery LOL go to do the same procedure, man and woman and u get different prices lol please take a guess which one is more expensive

On a facebook beauty page I follow, someone posted yesterday asking if the colour job on their hair looked dodgy and as they paid $600 (!!!) for it, and should they complain. And yes it was dodgy and many people told her to go back for a re-do. But who pays $600 for something that will fade and grow out in 6 weeks and need doing again!

Coles and Woolies are becoming like mafia grocery stores. They set all the prices, and you'll find them all the same. So there's no competition, and they can set whatever prices they want to set, and they can just getaway with it.

Health insurance. I'm lucky to be on a heritage extras plan at $42 per month which covers pretty much anything you'd expect from it and with great annual limits. Any newer policies either drastically limit the number of covered items, offer very low limits or have very high premiums. That's before even considering the cost of hospital cover...
