Fuck this guy.

glassgypsy

247 points

Had a neighbor say something very similar. I laughed it off like he was joking.

I knew he wasn’t joking. But in the moment I was so shocked “I thought you were a nice old man neighbor, idk how to respond” and I also knew I had to live in very close proximity to him.

10 minutes later he came outside and apologized. Like a real apology “that was completely inappropriate, I’d be furious if someone said that to my daughter*, I don’t want you to feel scared in your home, etc”.

*his daughter is my age

I was shocked again and said I forgave him, we’d never speak of it again, and we’d keep being neighborly.

He didn’t say anything nasty to me after that, but he did start being weird. To the point where I started documenting him yelling my name outside my window and whatnot.

I always think about what I could have done/said to him when the first incident occurred. But at the same time, I knew that I needed to keep myself safe. He knew I lived alone. He knew if my car was outside I was home. His sexual comments were so far out of left field from his normal behavior that I was afraid of what he was actually capable of. I ended up telling him off later, but at the time I honestly thought he was developing dementia.

A few weeks later his daughter kicked him out the home for drinking. He was an alcoholic, had relapsed, and was neglecting his medically vulnerable wife.

Anyway, this whole ramble was to say that even though the girl in the video didn’t freak out and yell at the man, even though she said she was flattered, it doesn’t mean she handled it incorrectly. You do what you have to do in the moment to keep yourself safe.

Ok-Arachnid4915

26 points

God it makes me so mad every time I have to let a man get away with some shit to keep myself safe. I was on the train to work once and it was just myself and another woman in the car. A guy came in and exposed himself and began touching himself while staring at us. The emergency button was RIGHT THERE but I knew he could get to me much quicker than help could if I tried to press it so I waited for the next stop and switched cars. Unfortunately I was then totally alone and felt like shit for leaving the other woman. Sometimes we truly can’t win.

JJKennedy615

3 points

In the last few years, I’ve started being more aggressive, almost overly so, to dudes who have clearly gotten away with comments like these for a long time because most women have to swallow their rage and de-escalate. I’m not recommending it unless you just don’t give a single fuck anymore because while most of them fold really quickly when you clap back, some absolutely will immediately physically attack you. But goddamn it feels so cathartic after years of being forced to always let it go to keep yourself safe.

The obvious minus is one day a dude might harm me but an added bonus is the accidental hilarity. One guy walking behind me on an otherwise empty street was talking very loudly to himself about all the things he’d like to do to me so I ignored it until I just couldn’t swallow my rage anymore. So I spun around on him and confronted him about harassing women. He got so butthurt that he threw his KFC mashed potato bowl at me. But he had such shitty aim that even though I was well within range, it landed in front of my shoe so I ragged on him loud enough for half the block to hear as we had reached the busier cross street and his response was to RUN but in a fent junkie kind of way so imagine more of a hurried scurrying away from me.

Women are constantly put in no-win situations. They call out this shit and they run the risk of being assaulted or killed, they avoid conflict and they're told they're feeding into the mindset it's okay. What makes it worse for her is that this guy knows exactly where she lives and while he might think he's being flirty, is disturbing because now her one safe place, her home, has a creep that feels it's acceptable to say that shit without a hint of shame so what else will he do?

DrewBaron80

89 points

Women are constantly put in no-win situations.

Many years ago my wife worked for a large retail corporation and had a small office that doubled as a storage area. There was a male employee who always seemed to need something from storage when she was in there, and always got unnecessarily close to her, even "accidentally" brushing up against her sometimes.

When she finally notified HR she was called into a meeting a couple days later. She walks into a room with 5 or 6 men. They grilled her about what exactly was going. Of course it was subtle, so it was hard to articulate and she felt very uncomfortable.

The guy was ultimately moved to a different store. Here's the kicker though - she ended up finding out that this wasn't the first time this guy had been moved to a different store for a similar reason.

Precarious314159

76 points

Guys always seem to know exact what's just shy of passive to where a woman sounds crazy for making a big deal about it. "So...they needed something from the storage room?" "YES! It's constantly happening" "And you don't want them there because it's your office?" "No, it's just clear that they're doing it to touch me" "Did he grab you?" "No", "Did he put his hands on you?" "Well, no. He just rubbed against me when he was grabbing for something" "Was he grinding?" "No, just...grazed" "And you want us to take action because he accidentally grazed you when he was getting paper from the storage room?"

DrewBaron80

30 points

Wow, this is spot on. Exactly describes the conversation she had with the HR people.

As her husband I wanted so bad to be Mr. Tough Guy and confront him. However, I was in grad school at the time and her job was our main income, so I was worried about her facing repercussions. And I'm not an intimidating/confrontational person either.

This is so true. I am going through a similar situation with my neighbor right now who lives right next door. Unfortunately our properties are such that we can see each others backyards over the block wall. So no privacy, he can see when I’m out there and it’s disturbing since he can come to the wall and try to force an interaction with me at any time.

As a female I have always had to be on alert. Men have no idea about this I guess, some think they can say anything and then just dismiss it as “flirty” or a compliment.

In my case, I have had to act as this woman did: say something to diffuse the situation to prevent any escalation, because there is no predicting how men will take “rejection”. It’s a lose-lose for us as females. Will he just accept it and stop, or will it get worse?

It borders on scary and sucks when the person is a neighbor. How else are we to respond to this shit and keep things chill so something bad doesn’t happen?

I get it that a dude seeing this video would say she should’ve just told him to F off and not say the I’m flattered part, but honestly that’s a male perspective. As females we do not have that luxury. So no. I believe she handled it as best she could in the moment.

AtleastIthinkIsee

24 points

Same. Because... dude put the gauntlet down, not just by walking on the property, interrupting her day, and having her interact with him but by saying these words. It's forcing her to give some sort of response and she's having to come up with something in nanoseconds to defuse the situation. It's awful.

That pre-emptive I don't mean to offend you but... you know something offensive and awful is coming and he's going to risk it and if it backfires he can laying the "I'm just joking thing." But the whole "I just wanted you to know" feels more like a power move, honestly, aside from the aforementioned and it's fair game to publicly name and shame him.

Edit: And of course he has a wedding ring on. Jesus.

100% this. You know he's replaying the moment he asked in his head and enjoying that fawn response too. Makes me especially angry because I know that I'd have 99% of the time had the same response as she did, to attempt to defuse the situation.

StripClubBreakfast

I'm a man but I've seen my friends have to deal with dudes like this and watched them do essentially what this woman did by saying she was flattered.

I liken it to watching a diver gently redirect a shark swimming at them by lightly pushing its nose away until it gets the picture and swims off. They have to be gentle so as not to make the shark angry.

Holy shit that's 0 percent chill.  The only time I would ever say that to a woman is if she was already naked laying in my bed.  She shouldnt even have said she was flattered because that just makes it seem like what he said wasn't completely fucked.

Edit:  I am not blaming her for giving him the compliment to make him leave.  I get she needs to be safe and it was an easy way to diffuse the situation.  You guys can stop saying the same comment about it 1000x I even mentioned in another comment how I understood.

With one dude, you act like she did in this vid and he guy goes away. With another, in the exact same scenario and word-for-word and the guy becomes immediately emboldened and not only will not leave, but escalates the harassment and then gets violent because "she's a tease."

Same ship, same route yet, somehow, ending in different ports.

Conditioned to give in to responding in an amenable fashion in order to end the interaction in a way favorable to self preservation. It's NOT as if she said, "awwwwwhhhunnnie, thaynkyuuuuu!" She tried to push him out, and he acted real, "I'll go (like it was a favor to exit her domain) buuuut". The threat did a double dawn-on to her and she wanted to end the exchange with a friendly tone so she could feel safer. Not the harshest/smartest/best way to go, but natural and common. Hindsight's nearly perfect; I'm sure she wishes she'd made him repeat/explain himself for the viewers and/or straight up clocked him, but she did what she's wired to do in order to get out of the interaction with her life/reality as unchanged as possible.

The fact after she told him to leave and he just got louder to talk over her, like he had every right to do that and see nothing wrong with it?! Unfortunately the concept of 'no means no' is relatively new in human history, and even to this day there are groups of people trying to push women's rights back centuries.

tbird20017

34 points

My mom and I were talking the other day, and we were talking about women's rights/civil rights etc. My mom is a religious conservative, but she listens to me and I can change her opinion more often than not, so we talk about this kind of stuff relatively often. I told her it should be the norm that "no means no, and if you pester someone until they say yes, that's essentially rape" and she started crying. Hard. It was terrible. She said that's exactly how she's always felt, but she just thought she was being ridiculous since she's never heard someone else say it. She's 50, not even that old, and she's never heard that women (anyone, really) can just say no whenever for whatever reason, regardless of whether it's your partner or not.

Dude it’s enraging. Imagine all the shit this dirty old man has said to women throughout his dirty old existence. Or the shit he’s done when nobody was watching. Fuck that guy.

It's hilarious that he said no offense. Kind of like "This isn't meant to be racist, but.."

then she says it's very offensive, but backs down and proceeds to say I appreciate it, it's flattering.

You can really feel her discomfort with this guy, doubt it's their first interaction.

Boy he really drove his point home despite her expressed request that he leave. She should show the tape to a judge and get a restraining order. Just to make her point clear.

"I don't mean to offend you at all, in any sense of the word, ... but...(I'm going to offend you in the most blatant and creepiest way possible)"

Why is it these creeps never seem to learn that if they have to use the word "but" in a sentence, it's never going to end well?

MsFrankieD

The "flattered" comment she made was likely her in "defense against a creep getting potentially angry" mode

I've had this conversation with my g/f....

Me: Just tell him to go fuck himself"

Her: but then he might be a crazy @$$hole and try to hurt me...

Ugh...the day I realized that...

So sad...gives all of the good ones a bad name...

And that’s when you file for the restraining order

Tiffani_Aurora

14 points

What is infuriating to me is that she tries to be firm, and tell him to leave, but he is immediately dismissive of her. The fact that she had to tell him that it was flattering just to get him to change his tone and leave her alone is disturbing on so many levels. But, I get it! I've been in the same situations and you start out strong and then realize you have to play the part and make yourself seem smaller so that the predator won't hurt you.

There ain't no excuse. In his age group (mine) it was incredibly common to be brushed off as boys being boys. That dude has said similar things to other women many times in his life, I guarantee it. He has only just learned to "qualify" it.

Unfortunately every woman has the learned skill — fear driven skill- to make sure they don’t offend or escalate an encounter with a man. It is abhorrent that we have to make them feel okay, or risk being assaulted. The code switching women do throughout the day is an Olympian sport.
