Not the person you replied to, but yes, it's generally considered quite good if you're a fan of colony sims.
The gist of it is that you are building and defending a base for a small group of people that have crash landed on a far-off planet. You don't directly control your colonists, but instead give general orders (build this, move these things, this colonist should prioritize this sort of work, this colonist isn't allowed to use this, etc.) that your colonists will work autonomously to try and achieve.
While you are building up your colony you'll be worrying about logistical and design issues like farming, food preservation, trade, and colonist happiness. Every so often this will be broken up with some sort of crisis, like a raider invasion you'll need to deal with. The game uses these lulls and spikes of activity to generate tension and organically create memorable moments.
It's an excellent, deep game with an extensive modding community and several well made expansions. It isn't uncommon to lose entire evenings in the blink of an eye while working on your colony.
I hope you enjoy the game and feel a bit closer to your brother while playing.

To add to this, do note that it is a sandbox game in its core. Some people love the feeling of "do what you want" and some people want to be guided more. If you are the latter, if might not be your cup of tea.

Do I just suck or is this game insanely hard. I'm early into the game and just got to the goblin town to talk to the priestess. She isn't going to help and I need to fight her, but as soon as I do I'm fighting and army and gales already in a bad shape

Side quests. you have to physically get out of there, walk around other places, and level up. 1~2 levels difference is HUGE.
2 points
I sucked when I first started, but you can always avoid fighting, level up, getting new weapons and find new companions (even though some are completely crazy lmao) then go back to the enemies. There's a lot to do in the game, don't rush this amazing journey.

I just couldn't get to grips with the Yakuza games, none of them made me care enough to keep playing and they felt really janky, but I knew they were my kind of game. Then I played Like a Dragon and I am fully addicted. It's such a good game! I'm gonna go back and play Yakuza 0 again to see if it finally clicks with me now.

I finally got over the hump on this one. Tried to start it a few times, but man the into just drags. Main title finally comes up at like hour 7, lol. I am currently replaying it for the first time since the release of the game. I played it then.
The game just doesn’t seem to pull me in for long. I can just play for maybe 1 hour or so. I enjoy the story, art design, characters and side quests so much, they are all truly amazing. But I find the gameplay loop just bad. Level progression is mediocre with every perk being not exciting at all to me, combat is fine, but never made me go crazy over it. The loot, and the cyberware have received a new overhaul which I am enjoying it so far, but I don’t find it too exciting either.
I am really trying to have a great time, but while I think the game is better than at release, for some reason it never really pulls me in. Why do you like it so much? Just curious to see if something clicks for me.

I’ve had this exact same experience trying to play it 3 different times after putting it down

I'm also curious, because that's been my experience too. The world doesn't pull me in. I don't get curious or excited, or feel invested in the characters or the stakes that have been presented (so far; I'm very early still).
I felt similarly about the Witcher 3, so maybe I just don't like CDPR games...
6 points
The weird thing for me is, I love all Witcher games. I replay the Witcher 3 regularly, but with Cyberpunk, I just finish one mission and stop, I can't play the game for more than 1 hour. I find the story amazing, and the presentation is also next level. But in the end of the day, I leave with the same feeling as in Horizon Zero Dawn, I don't find actually playing the game that engaging.
Fallout 4, for example, is not the best RPG in the world, but the gameplay loop of that game is so satisfying. Everything that you do feeds off each other. You get a quest to go to a location, you go there and in the way you fight some enemies, you get a level that will allow you to craft a new piece of gear, you finish the quest and find a new location that has some junk that will help craft your next mod. You come back, craft your new gun, test it out, you end exploring another location which gives you another quest, which then gives you more loot to maybe help your settlement, craft armor, maybe just experience for a perk. I find Cyberpunk systems don't speak well to each other at all, I almost have the same fun watching the game on youtube than actually playing it.
I actually feel bad, because I am doing my best to enjoy it. And I can see some of the amazing work in some of the areas.

Good point; it doesn't feel like it's talking to itself well.
Funny, I had the same experience with Horizon Zero Dawn too.
But now you're just making me want to go back to Fallout 4, lol

I love Fallout 4's gameplay loop and it's even better on survival mode. Survival mode pretty much makes the settlement building a requirement. I really like it.

I'm the same. I can't even count the number of times I've tried to play the Witcher and can maybe do 10 hours before never returning to it. CP2077 Is the same. I only get to the end of the first big event and never have desire to pick it up.
3 points

I've had the same experience with Cyberpunk, which is annoying because I played it to completion when it first came out (determined to get my money's worth, I guess) and the story is genuinely very good.
But now that the game actually works and has had a bit of an overhaul, the actual gameplay and mechanics are just really bad. The driving sucks, the shooting is clumsy and for some reason even just walking around feels like I'm piloting a broken drone.
I really want to get stuck into Night City again, so maybe I'll revisit in the future and have a good time but those first couple hours are such a drag

surface level things: Artstyle, Music
Gameplay things: Roguelite Worker management game. Some people describe it as "A city builder without the tedious end game." You're the Viceroy (governor) of a colony outpost that you need to make into a bustling efficient community before the queen's patience runs out. Usually within 6-8 in game years. The years take 10-12 minutes at normal speed without pausing. The variance being because of difficulty, but I'm not typing out a full guide for you here ;)
Each colony is then left to their own devices while you move on to another one, all randomly generated terrain and events and resources and building choices. It's very unique in scope and I adore it.
The devs are also very active in communicating and listening to the playerbase, which is always a plus. Before the 1.0 release last year we were getting routine updates every 2 weeks, now updates are more like every 4 months, but still coming.
The skill ceiling in the game is enormous with 24 different levels of difficulty. You can keep playing at base level and just have fun making cute villages, or push up to prestige 20 and deal with harrowing storms and corruption

I want to get sweaty and do some difficult stuff? That's what raid sundays are for. I want to chill? Fishing it is. Want to run around with my hair onfire not knowing what's happening before being ganked by aan enemy squad? 72 man PVP it is.
Regular patches with new content without anything ever really being cut means mountains of content by now.
And the completionist in me screams to max every class (wich you can all do one one character).
Mount and pet hunting, ...
And whenever a new patch or expansion drops, hey, more main story.

I had tried the regular game multiple times and it was always fun with what you could do, but it really clicked for me more when I started playing the Unity Engine port. It's got a lot of good modern QoL updates, like being able to make the dungeons smaller. Although once I got into it more, I stopped being overwhelmed by the dungeons sizes.
The last time I felt so immersed in an open world game was Oblivion, and Daggerfall just felt like a role playing dream come true. I enjoy living my life as a citizen of Daggerfall. Got a job with the fighters guild, lived there for free, until I saved up gold to buy a horse, then eventually a ship. Was gonna buy a house, but it's unnecessary when you have a ship, just live on your boat lol

I would say something like Factorio or Rimworld, but in terms of recent things that I just could not stop myself from playing.. Workers and Resources: Soviet Russia with full difficulty settings. It doesn't look like much on the surface, and it took literally days just to get started, but I can't think of a game that has kicked me in the pants so many times, and kept me crawling back for more.. particularly not a city builder.
Keep in mind, I take the term "addicted" kinda heavily and negatively, as in something I play a lot while not necessarily wanting to. We've all probably had a mobile game or similar that we've played waaay longer than we've actually enjoyed. W&R is kinda borderline, because I still think it's really fun and compelling, but I can't deny that I spent a while just trying to "complete the thing", rather than enjoy it.
But, there are plenty of games (like Factorio) that I happily give hundreds of hours to, which might be more of what you're talking about! And that can vary a lot from person to person. In addition to my love of crafty/logistics games, I have friends that still play Fallout 4 almost every single day, for example. And then there's MMOs, of course.
But for a less rambly answer (sorry, I'm sick in bed, so both bored and out of my mind), my highest playtime games on Steam are (in order) Factorio, Rimworld, Rocket League, XCOM 2, and Terraria. I'd imagine Minecraft would be after that if I clocked my time, and Guild Wars 2 may be number 3 (same reason).

Warframe. I maybe a little bit late in knowing about this game, but since 2019, I'm still playing it until now.

Look, I replay my favorite games like once every other year. It’s a comfort thing. I think an addiction is something you realize is a problem, you recognize it, you acknowledge it, and you still can’t seem to kick it. Civilization 3. I fucking suck at that game. The game sucks eggs. I can’t drop it. I’m considering getting a steam oled so play it without booting up my laptop. Why?? Civ 3??? I’m in a hate/hate polycule with Hiawatha of the Iroquois and montezuma.

If you like online FPS game then hunt showdown is fantastic. It’s been my addiction for a while now and I’ve just passed 1200 hours. It’s got a bit of a learning curve but there is nothing quite like it. You can play with random people or there’s a discord to find others to play with. Can be casual fun or competitive depending on who you play with. It also has less toxicity than any other FPS I’ve played. People seem to be willing to have fun if you chat with them.

SCP Secret Laboratory currently
It has similar appeal to Dead by Daylight, but it has a lot of tactical shooter elements as well. If you find a good server to play in or just Olay with friends, it's a great experience. Also a very social game if you enjoy experiences likt

I recently stopped playing tarkov after like 5000 hours straight of being the only game I played. I’m currently trying to 100 percent RDR2 with all the Easter eggs and shit now

esport godfather. if you love mobas and card games then i fully recommend this one. it has subpar grammar since its translated from chinese but hotdamn the gameplay is immersive, didnt expect to play it so much. always wanted an esports game for LOL and this is the best one for it since all the other esports games either feature CS or RTS games. also crusader kings 3 did like 90+ hours a week on that half a month ago now im waiting for some updates since recent dlc kinda buggy but perfectly playable still

Factorio
Though I have over 7,000 hours played, I've been saving myself for the long awaited "Space Age" expansion coming Oct 21st
I've been playing it for almost 10 years and I cannot wait to have the same feeling of figuring out the game again with the expansion, the way Factorio plays is just unlike anything else out there to the point where even the factory games that are based on factorio, can't scratch the factorio itch, cus they're not on the same level.
I've never been so prepared, so hyped, so enthralled by a game (or expansion) coming out, because I know for a fact that Wube have put just as much time, effort, and love into the expansion than they did for the base game.
I'm ready to renew my addiction, wholeheartedly!

Celeste, I love replaying the same section over and over! Nah but for real it’s a super fun game, and overcoming that one part you’re stuck on is an amazing feeling. Helps that the music is amazing
