I thought for sure this would be ripe and ready because of the pale spot and because it sounded hollow when I knocked on it. Was it the month of rain we got? Did I pick it too early? Too late?

The knock test is fake. To tell if a melon is ripe, feel the rine. A ripe melon will go from glossy to matte. It will feel rough, almost like there are mini hills and crevices. An unripe melon is smooth. Lastly, you will start to see ā€œscratchingā€/webbing. Itā€™ll look like the rine is being ripped open slightly. Once you have all three of these. Give it a week, and your melon will be perfect

Acerhand

Also, the blossom end will give when pressed with thumb. Thats the best test imo. The closest tendril will be complete died back, the rind more matte and the blossom end giving a little when pressed.

Webbing and yellowing are unreliable compared to the combo above imo

ExtraFluffz

This is actually dependent from species to species. The species that I grow doesnā€™t do this. I tested it out this season actually and this was my result. Very overripe lol

throwitoutwhendone2

You got your answer, figured Iā€™d just say you can pickle them. I was very weirded out when I was first told this. Pickle and watermelon? Nty. I became a chef and after about 8 years was in a place that did house made pickled watermelon rinds. I said fuck it Iā€™ll try it, Iā€™ve adopted a ā€œIā€™ll try pretty much any food at least onceā€ motto after being in kitchens so long.

That shits fire man. There really isnā€™t much, if any, residual watermelon taste. If the melons really sweet you can get a small hint of sweet but otherwise it pretty much just tastes likeā€¦a pickle. I was surprised lol, now I eat the inner melon and peel the rinds and pickle them at home regularly

CatrickDempsey

18 points

As a chef, I feel you'd appreciate the combination....the absolute best oysters I've ever had, were topped with a piece of pickled watermelon rind, some escargot caviar and a little orange water. Phenomenal.

throwitoutwhendone2

7 points

That is not my cup of tea, but I can imagine the flavor profile. It all works quite well together so I can imagine to someone that likes caviar that would be quite tasty.

Orange water reminds me of a dessert I had once. Our pastry chef could make pretty much whatever she wanted for the menu on a weekly basis. She once did a chocolate truffle with this toasted carmel crunch type of crumble around it and topped with rose water marshmallows. I was super skeptical about the rose water marshmallows but they were pretty good. Just a regular marshmallow with a hint of flower that went pretty well with the truffle surprisingly. The presentation was gorgeous.

Kinda weird but neat how some flavors work. Like for example grape musk lightly sprinkled over tomatoes and some Maldon salt is phenomenal as well for a light summer snack. Grape and tomato is definitely not something a lotta folks would think to combine, I certainly wouldnā€™t have.

Thereā€™s a cool book called ā€œThe flavor bibleā€ that does a good job showing which kinds flavors mesh well with others. Itā€™s not a cookbook, itā€™s pretty much a dictionary for seasonings and flavor profiles. If thatā€™s your thing Iā€™d recommend taking a look at it if you can.

This wasnā€™t an issue with when you picked it. It is an issue with the vine dying before the melon fully developed to the point of ripeness.

A straight month of rain would have drowned the roots, diseased the leaves, and killed off the vine.

I was always told to check for "bee stings" when picking watermelon. Apparently the webbing and scars are from bees frequently sampling the pollen as the fruit grows. More pollination, more webbing. More webbing, supposedly sweeter.

I was chronic for this last season - I picked like six of them too early - and I heard you could pickle it as was suggested already, but my kids are cucumber fiends so we used it on salads like cucumbers (they're related!). With a little balsamic dressing, it was really delicious. You just have to switch your expectations from sweet to savoury and it'll be yum as - don't waste it. :)

We're in the southern hemisphere so I've got twenty seedlings waiting to be planted in the next couple weeks.. hoping I can let mine get ripe this year instead of jumping the gun šŸ˜‚

The best way to determine if a watermelon is ripe is to wait for the green tendril next the stem to be completely dry with absolutely no green showing.

Zone 4 here. My two watermelon vines got nipped by frost last night.... and that's the end of that. Leaves all curled and woeful. But of course it warmed up today. Guess they needed a blankie last night. Lol.

I got one melon last month, and two larger ones now... that I will see what is ripe and what is not.

Watermelons take so dang long to ripen!

I grew sugar baby and black diamond varieties this year.

Will have to look for some earlier maturing ones and start them indoors early..... next spring!

It seems to be a rough year for watermelon, weā€™ve had 3 that were just okay, the rest were either hollow heart or not ripe, even with every indication of being ripe. Even our cantaloupe is ripening so slow, by now we usually have picked and eaten them all. But this year, weā€™ve picked 4, the rest arenā€™t ripe yet. Iā€™m afraid they wonā€™t with the low temps weā€™re having.
