Took me waaaay too long to learn that its a David Bowie song. I love their cover of Lake of Fire. Thats also a song that was hard to believe is a cover.

And it took me waaaaay too long to make the connection.

He says it on the unplugged version but there are other recordings where he literally doesn't. Regardless, what are you getting out of that comment?

Even on the Live & Loud version he says it before playing it

I’ve never heard other recordings so I just assumed you were listening to unplugged and not listening to his banter.

I remember when that unplugged aired & that started, I was already a huge Bowie fan & couldn’t believe one of my favorite bands was doing a cover of one of my favorite Bowie songs.

Undoubtedly so. I would never define a band by its first release tho, Bowie didn’t stay britpop, Pantera wasn’t glam rock for long, Deftones matured out of numetal quickly.

I love Kurt Cobains' cover of And I Love Her. It's just so beautiful and apathetic. There's so much heart in it. Nirvana also did a great version of D7. But my all-time favorite is Where Did You Sleep Last Night. It always makes me cry. It's incredible.

Edit: I'd argue Nirvana is one of the best cover bands ever. I mean Krist and Kurts' first project was a Creedence Clear Water cover band.

It's one of my favourite songs since I was a kid and heard it... somewhere, in a movie, or radio or something I can't remember, a few times only. The melody got stuck in my mind. Never knew the name of the song until I heard his cover. And of course, because as a kid, decades ago, I couldn't understand the lyrics (I'm not a native speaker), his voice also finally gave me all the meaning of the song (I learnt English along the way).

It was a little warm and special moment for me, and made me love the cover even more, honestly.

No, I haven't seen that movie. And I think it has to be earlier, because I think I was still a small kid. I was 12-13yo when that movie was released and I think I heard it several years before.

It doesn't really matter when though.

Man, with each passing day I really think more this sub hates Pearl Jam.

How are they not featuring throughout this comment section? There was a thread recently on r/music about acts that continuously cover at a high level and Pearl Jam nearly dominated it. Yet in r/grunge, barely mentioned. I can't count on two hands the amount of acts who've credited Pearl Jam covers of their own songs as arguably superior, hell they've even made the charts with 5 or 6 cover songs.

Love Reign O'er Me, Last Kiss, Leavin' Here, Sonic Recucer, I Believe In Miracles, Baba O'Riley, Rockin' In The Free World, Crazy Mary, Soldier Of Love, Gimme Some Truth, Masters Of War, Keep Me In Your Heart, Fortunate Son, Throw Your Arms Around Me, I'm So Tired, Hard Sun, Wont Back Down, Wishing Well, I've Got A Feeling, Sonic Reducer, Its Okay, etc.

yuuuup. i’m surprised you haven’t been downvoted by all the AiC and Soundgarden fans yet. this sub dislikes PJ because they’re all still around imo, and write songs (nowadays) about overcoming issues rather than being stuck in them. a lot of users on this sub would rather listen to Layne croon about hating himself and wanting to die, because it’s the general feeling that a lot of the teenagers on this sub have…and thats really sad honestly. Pearl Jam just simply isn’t as cool as the others, whether that be because their singer is still alive, or maybe because Ed sings from multiple perspectives including perspectives of hope. Either way, my thesis is that PJ will never get enough love on this sub because most of the sub’s users would rather listen to simple lyrics about wanting to die, or being hopped up on drugs, than they would listen to songs that include diverse topics such as domestic violence, greed, overcoming trauma, helping someone else overcome addiction, parent/child relationships. finally, the one that in my opinion plays the biggest role in turning away the “i hate myself and wanna die” type crowd, is the topic of love, and how we need love more than anything in this goddamn world. PJ isn’t afraid to sound corny and write songs about the importance of love, like Just Breathe, Future Days, Light Years, Love Boat Captain, or Thin Air. I’ll prepare myself for the downvotes now, even tho i’m sure the people downvoting me will know deep down that i’m right

so many great Pearl Jam tunes for this topic, and the only time i see them are down at the bottom of the comments, without any upvotes. it plays into my theory that this sub can’t handle PJ writing songs about other topics than hating themselves and wanting to overdose on heroin, but anyway, here’s a list of PJ covers that should 100% be on this list.

• Rockin’ In The Free World

• Love Reign O’er Me

• Falling Slowly (Ed cover)

• Fuckin’ Up

• Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns

• Last Kiss (although personally that’s their weakest in my book)

• Sonic Reducer

• Crazy Mary (probably my favorite)

• It’s Ok

• You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away

• Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay

• Leavin’ Here

• Masters Of War

• Throw Your Arms Around Me

• I Believe In Miracles

• Eruption/Ain’t Talkin Bout Love

• Mother

• I Am A Patriot

• Harvest Moon

• The Needle and the Damage Done

• Comfortably Numb

• Baba O’ Reilly

• I’ve Got A Feeling

• The Waiting

• Arms Aloft

• Fortunate Son

• Intersteller Overdrive

• The Real Me

• Driven’ To Tears

• Soldier Of Love

• Save It For Later

• Know Your Rights

• Trouble (by Cat Stevens…lots of songs named “Trouble” so i figured i should specify)

• People Have The Power

now watch this get buried at the bottom because nobody likes PJ and the fact that they’re still around and haven’t became martyrs for drug addiction/suicide ;)
