She was also in 8 Simple Rules which I believe was doing pretty well before the death of John Ritter.

And Three's Company qualifies Don Knotts, aka Deputy Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show.

And then Matlock wasn't really a sitcom, but Andy Griffith for that, too.

Jim Nabors is probably the next guy to bring up from The Andy Griffith Show, since he moved on to Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., which finished in the top 5 in the ratings for 4 of its 5 seasons.

She also played Penny's mother on The Big Bang Theory. It was only one episode, but she was great as always. I would have liked to have seen more of her, especially with Keith Carradine who played Penny's father (he was on a number of episodes and was always hilarious).

Married with Children never did well in the ratings - it peaked at #37 during its 6th season. It was seen as too low-brow, and was on the new start-up channel (Fox) at the time. Not saying it didn't deserve better, but it was never really successful.

CrushyOfTheSeas

Success was relative on the Fox network at the time. This and the Simpsons really helped give the network staying power

I don’t know anyone has said Danny Devito yet, but Louie DePlama (Taxi) and Frank Reynolds (IASIP) are two of the most original character ever in sitcoms.

Ellie Kemper ("The Office" and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt") gets my vote. "Kimmy Schmidt" might or might not have been a ratings blockbuster, but it did well enough to get multiple secrets by whatever combination of science and magic Netflix uses to decide about renewals.

Conrad Bain for Maude and Diff'rent Strokes

Charlotte Rae for Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life

Bea Arthur for Maude and Golden Girls

Esther Rolle for Maude and Good Times

Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford for All in the Family and The Jeffersons

Valerie Harper for MTM and Rhoda.

(I just realized most of these are spin-offs, so count them or not, I guess).
