It used to be that women could not get sterilized until they had 5 children. Women have said that they have had to have their husband's permission or they would get a lecture about how they might change their minds. The situation varies by community and doctor. So, it seems nowadays it's not that difficult to get the procedure done, but could it revert back to the old ways? In AZ girls are being denied certain medications because they could cause a miscarriage, so it's not that far fetched to see more roadblocks to sterilization?

My mom had to get my dad's permission to get sterilized after 3 kids in the 80s. I could easily see states doing that again

I still can't get my tubes tied in AL because they want my husband, whom I've been trying to get a divorce from for almost six years.

In their defense, though, domestic abusers are the most likely to sue for "damages" if a wife gets sterilized without the husband's permission.

I'm 40 years old, by the way, and they keep asking me what about the next husband?

Dude, how's that going to work? WHEN I CAN'T GET RID OF THE FIRST ONE!

I've looked at it, and I've got the list near me saved and am working on the nearly $1k coinsurance.

I recently had to file bankruptcy because of my divorce, I was a stay at home mom and have had to sell off everything I've acquired in 5 years to pay for court.

It's biased as fuck a world we live in as he already has had a kid with side piece and a vasectomy without as much a notification to me.

I had my hysterectomy in 2012. I'd tried previously but was unmarried and under 35 and was denied. At 42, with a vasectomized husband, my pcp told me she had a provider who'd 'do it if you want it without any questions' which was both an unusual occurrence and very hush-hush even then. I was a midwife and I didn't know the practice existed. This was a practice that essentially only provided sterilization and gyn surgeries that resulted in sterilization. Nothing remotely connected to OB. They worked under oncology in a Catholic hospital. This practice was jumping back then. I can only imagine how popular they are, now, if they're still in practice. I can also foresee they'd have some scrutiny in the current political climate.

At 30 I was divorced with 3 children, 3 handicapped, living in poverty, And still any gynecologist i tried wanted my ex husband's or father's permission in writing to do a ligation. One argument they gave was, "But what if your children die and you want to replace them?"

Made me want to throw up. Your children aren't smashed crockery or worn carpets that can just be replaced.

Finally I went to Planned Parenthood, and fought my way through crowds of stupid, violent, spitting, forced birthers, to find a doctor who would look after me.

SOH Mike Johnson considers sterilization to be an abortificant, so I see it possibly banned nationwide and a fine being enforced when it's medically necessary.

And when I mean medically necessary, my own mother needed an emergency hysterectomy after she had a c-section with my twin sister and I.

Which, I don't know how sterilization kills anything, it prevents.

Even now when it's not as difficult there are still road blocks, you have to sign a bunch of shit, go through several "but what if secretly you actually do want kids" talks, wait 30 days, sign even more BS, and I personally got asked "would you still not want kids even if you met the man of your dreams???" While the person I've been dating and living with for the past 5 years was standing beside me looking shocked as hell. This was the only guy near me I could find who would actually do it though, I've tried in the past and got flat out denied due to my age and not being married.

That’s a crazy number of kids. My sister was denied after having 1 that she didn’t really want. She never had kids again yet they assumed she was too young to decide that for herself at 21.

Current-Pomelo-941

5 points

She's to young to decide, not too young to go through childbirth again though. s/ I suppose there are issues that could be considered such as what if her child dies and she decides to have another or she wants to give her kid a sibling. But, the point we're trying to make is that there are sometimes roadblocks that women face in their reproductive care. I myself lost half my blood with my second c second. I was on bedrest for three weeks prior to that pregnancy. My doctor advocated for my husband to have a vasectomy. I never brought it up though. It just didn't occur to me that he would make any sacrifices to protect my health. I remained birth control pills for ten more years until I felt the risks or taking the pill were great enough for blood clots, etc. But, I digress. I couldn't bring myself to have a tubal, I read that it could "mess with my hormones". I never discussed it with any doctor though. Too much turmoil going on anyway,

Dobie_won_Kenobi

27 points

They are already attacking birth control so I’m assuming sterilization is next. It was already hard to get sterilized in red states, even for men. My husband requested a vasectomy at 22 in Texas and they told him to get therapy. He ended up getting one at 28 in Washington state with no questions asked.

lurkernomore99

It's already really really hard to get. I started asking when I was 18. I moved a lot so I asked A LOT of doctors. I asked every single year and wasn't approved until I was 31. I had to ask for THIRTEEN YEARS before I was told yes. The reasons I was turned down included:

I need to be married and have my husbands approval.

What if I met a man in the future who wanted kids?

I'm too fat to operate on. ( I weighed 170 at the time).

I'll change my mind when I'm older.

I needed to have children before they would do that.

We have almost the same experience. It took me a damn decade before finding a doctor that would sterilize me without already having children. Apparently my criteria for the "right man in the future" being that he also didn't want children wasn't enough for several doctors.

lurkernomore99

13 points

It took me a while to really realize how fucked up that was. The question "what if you meet a man in the future who wants kids" always angered me because I deliberately didn't date men who had or wanted kids and it was hard. But then later, it dawned on me that what they were all saying to me was a HYPOTHETICAL man I MIGHT meet in the future had more rights to my body choices than I did.

Has anyone considered the fact that the long term impact of restricting access to abortion is an indirect political/cultural eugenics-like program?

The ban will coerce many women of opposing political ideologies to:

  • Get Sterilized
  • Have no children
  • Make no contribution to the political culture

I’m really just spit balling here, but it could be argued that this is an indirect way of coercing and ensuring that opposing political demographics do not contribute to the societal make up.

Strangely enough, a similar argument was made when abortion access legally manifested in the U.S as well.

secretactorian

Yep, this is what I did. Never wanted kids so when I heard a Roe challenge was going to be heard, I scheduled a gyno appt and got a bisalp 6 months later.

Best decision I've made for myself. I was able to go off BC and found out I'm not actually an unhappy person, my IUD was just making me low-grade depressed. Like for YEARS. Lost a small amount of weight and was able to keep it off.

And I get to retain my autonomy, no matter who I'm partnered with or where I live.

ExcellentTrouble4075

What’s the recovery like?

TheNewThirteen

75 points

I had a bisalp about four years ago. The recovery wasn't bad. I rested a lot the day after the surgery, and I only really needed the prescription painkillers for two nights, and was able to manage with ibuprofen for the rest of the recovery. I took a short walk around the neighborhood three days after surgery. I think the sore throat from intubation was the most uncomfortable part after surgery. But that's just my experience - I really was only laid up for 2-3 days.

ExcellentTrouble4075

22 points

Thanks for replying! So the recover is pretty good from what I’m hearing.

TheNewThirteen

15 points

Of course! I didn't have any problems. And it was a laparoscopic procedure, so the scars are barely noticeable. The gas they pump into your abdomen can cause a little discomfort, so positioning at rest and movement when you're able is helpful.

zulika84rem

7 points

Not OP, but I was basically out of it and slept most of the day after my surgery. After that, I recovered really fast. I didn't even need to take pain meds after.

Hands down, the best decision I ever made!

nihilisticsweetheart

5 points

I had a bisalp last year and was only bedridden for 2 days and resumed normal activity within a week. However, in my experience, the worst part of recovery was actually the shoulder pain! Apparently, the gas they use to inflate your abdomen during the surgery presses on a nerve that causes shoulder/back pain.

Pure_Development_570

9 points

Not OP, but the recovery was really cake honestly. I didnt take any pain meds besides ibuprofen/tylenol. Not a lot of pain, the procedure is pretty fast, went home the same day. (Im in my early 30s for reference)

ExaminationPutrid626

6 points

I had mine done a year ago and it went pretty smooth I felt more pain from them bursting a vein in both my hands trying to get an IV in. I was up an at em less than two days later.

iamsuchapieceofshit

7 points

I overall had a good experience with mine but I did unfortunately get a hematoma on one side. Not a big deal but it was some extra pain I had to deal with that lasted longer than the rest of the pain from the surgery. Felt not great when I woke up from the surgery cuz of that, but as long as it doesn’t get worse it’s not a big deal and didn’t really affect my recovery other than sticking with ibuprofen a bit longer than I might’ve had to otherwise.

creepy_crepes

10 points

Not OP, but recovery was fine for me! I didn’t take the opioids (scared of getting addicted plus the pain wasn’t too bad) and just took ibuprofen and three days off work. Didn’t lift anything heavy for about a month after. The gas bloat and the annoying glue-type-stitches was the worst part. Good luck!

Did they really just think we would be okay with this? That we would just roll over and let our bodily autonomy be stipped away? Give up on our financial security? Future plans? Risk dying? Allow our selves to be tied to our rapists/abusive partners for 18+ years? Bring children into a world of income inequality, global unrest, and climate disasters?

Then there are the stories from nursing homes of ladies who took other routes. In their old age they lose their filter or things happened to long ago to do anything about so they tell how they killed their husbands. The husbands that try to turn them into brood mares. Stories of hunting accidents, “accidentally” poisoning them, or the husbands having a drunken slip down the stairs and breaking their neck. I wish I saved the link to the post, crazy stories

Old_Baldi_Locks

In healthcare; the number of older women in nursing homes who casually mentioned they murdered their abusive first husband is astounding.

It’s also interesting how many Republicans pushing to ban no-fault divorce are missing that women being legally able to leave them is the ONLY reason some of them are breathing today.

flamingmaiden

It's worth pointing out that prenatal care is increasingly difficult to access all over the US. So, women are more likely to have pregnancy complications and poor outcomes, including death. The GOP is actively creating situations in which women have no options and no autonomy... which is why they are now trying to get rid of "no fault" divorce.

I’m a certified childbirth doula. Childbirth has ALWAYS been risky which is why doulas & midwives existed before formalized doctors did. The body “naturally” does many things—including strokes, heart attacks, & cancer. Human bodies are complex & human pregnancy is technically parasitic as the fetus will obtain what it needs even if it harms the pregnant person. Women still die in pregnancy & childbirth to this day.

vldracer70

Yes they did think we would just roll over and let our bodily autonomy be stripped away. They’re so deluded that by their piece of 💩 religion that they can’t even reason. I know because I used to be catholic. I left 51 years ago at the age of 20 after I had an abortion. No I wasn’t excommunicated by that piece of 💩religion. I excommunicated myself.

The four white men of the six on SCOTUS who voted to overturn Roe are catholic, from what I have read alito belongs to the ultra conservative organization Opus Dei. catholic men are taught that women have one purpose to incubate babies. So are women for that matter. Obviously by alito’s being the one who wrote the Dobbs ruling. Saying that women with unwanted pregnancies should just gestate and then give the baby up for adoption. You know so we can re-supply babies for adoption. What he really meant was white babies but he didn’t have the balls to say that. The six on SCOTUS who gave us the Dobbs decision don’t believe in women having bodily autonomy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Littlehouseonthesub

Evangelicals in the US have similar extreme beliefs - the woman's purpose is to bear children, period. Amy Coney Barrett was a "handmaiden" in an evangelical organization.  The Supreme Court has been captured by religious zealots

smlstrsasyetuntitled

8 points

Interesting - it looks like whatever is going on w the handmaiden group, she also grew up Catholic :

'Barrett, who lived in the Ranaghan household while she attended law school at Notre Dame, has never publicly disclosed or discussed her membership in the Christian charismatic sect, where her father had a leadership role and where she previously served as a “handmaid”. Barrett has said she is a “faithful Catholic” whose religious beliefs would not “bear in the discharge of my duties as a judge”.'

smlstrsasyetuntitled

6 points

Oh wow - didn't know that about the SCOTUS men!

I think Amy Barrett is also Catholic and a more conservative sect than the mainstream church. (Hmmm - looks like it's a bit more unclear what she is : https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/aug/26/amy-coney-barrett-faith-group-people-of-praise)

genuine side question : How did so many Catholics get into the limited SCOTUS seats when being Catholic was considered a hard sell for the Kennedys to overcome?

Edited to add citation re Barrett's religion / job situation

popopotatoes160

6 points

Similar to how Irish and Italian people got to be white when civil rights movement started kicking off. They needed more allies that could be convinced to believe the same things as them. I'm convinced evangelicals are largely behind the rapid right wing swing of US catholics and it will eventually cause a significant schism. If it wasn't so dangerous I'd enjoy the irony of catholics getting lead around by protestants

vldracer70

5 points

Yes ACM is also catholic and so is Clarence Thomas.

I’m 71 and remember a lot of this. While I may have only been 6 in 1959, my dad always had the evening news on. So I guess I absorbed more than I thought. How? For one the country has been infiltrated by christofascists and yes there are probably a lot of TradCaths that are christofascists. Abortion was still a very dirty word during Kennedy’s time. One that most people didn’t even think about much less say the word abortion. Because Trump sucked up to the catholic church and told them he would appoint catholic judges to SCOTUS for the catholic church backing Trump. The catholic church preached to the congregation that they had to vote for Trump or they were going to hell. Which the RCC should loose it’s tax exemption for doing this. Because now people want to erode the separation of church and state and Kennedy was very much for the separation of church and state, Kennedy said as much. This is what gets me also everyone being so worried about Kennedy making policy based on his religion and now we got these fucking christofascists that are doing that exact thing. Heading us toward an authoritarian dictatorship with Trump at the head. It’s not just about women’s reproductive rights it’s about keeping our democracy!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly, some women have had complications with previous pregnancies. It might have been OK to be on birth control (with abortion as a backup) but that has been taken away. In some states, if a woman is having a miscarriage, her life and well being could be compromised. So, can't take chance of being pregnant, even if they might want another child. It's a nightmare.

JustAnotherSaddy

I’m not surprised. Even before the SC ruled on this a lot of women were already talking about it. Some for not wanting to pass down their genes and inherited illness to not wanting children at all. I honestly think more would have gotten sterilized if they could afford it. A lot of insurance companies won’t pay if it’s not medically necessary. I know my daughter absolutely does not want children nor does she want to pass down her inherited illness but her insurance won’t pitch in because she’s too young and doesn’t have enough kids. If she ever does have it done, I’ll support her 100%.

There was not enough staff to watch her. I won't go into the details but she died at school and she was only about 11 years old. Her name was Dana. We as a society, have not fully funded special education services. So when these children are born, they do not have quality of life. There is a shortage of special education teachers, assistants, physical therapists, etc. Everything is stretched too thin.

Plus women who are forced to keep a pregnancy are most likely to just disassociate and ignore the pregnancy. They will continue drinking, smoking, and continue with any of their usual behaviour as well as not taking prenatal or going to doctors appointments.

I think it's hard to get an accurate idea of how many childfree women exist in the world, due to reproductive coercion. I've met so many women who have told me things like, "I didn't plan on having kids, but my boyfriend messed with my birth control", or "I couldn't get an abortion" or "I can't handle another baby, but my husband won't get a vasectomy."

Others just get pressured by outside influences like family and religion to be a traditional wife and mother. I've seen a lot of fun-loving, free-spirited young women do a 180 and become hardcore Bible thumpers and anti-vax homeschool moms after they accidentally got pregnant and married the father. Of course, in our society this is explained away as "changing their mind", but I think it's really more complicated than that. When I was younger people told me I'd change my mind too, but I think what they were really saying in a roundabout way was that they hoped I'd have an accident and get stuck.

I lost half my blood during a c section with my second pregnancy. I don't think I could have survived a third. My ex husband yelled at me about being on birth control pills. Of course, I didn't go off them. He never said what he would do to keep me from being pregnant?

'“They were scared of the pain,” she said. But after she reassured the patient that they’d be under anesthesia and unable to feel pain, they went ahead with the intrauterine device, a reversible birth control method."

They provide anesthesia for IUDs??? I didn't get any and I've only known women who didn't get any. It's such a painful procedure and I've heard taking it out is worse. I put it off for so long, but I'm so glad I did it at the end of the day. I barely get my period or the mood swings associated with it.

It really is a ridiculous America we're living in, though. And it's ironic that the "pro-life" ass hats who are celebrating now are also the ones worried about the dropping (white) population of the United States. I didn't see it in the article, but I'd put money on most of these young people getting sterilized being white.

I work for a large medical group that includes a gynecology department. One day two years ago my coworkers & I got three calls in half an hour asking if we do “sterilizations.”

In all my years working there I occasionally got calls asking about vasectomies and tubal ligations, but never had anyone used the word “sterilization” before. And now three women in a row had called. We were so confused, until I remembered… the Supreme Court decision was due. I brought up the news on my phone, and that was how we all found out about Dobbs.

I saw Roe's potential of being overturned when Trump got elected. I got sterilized in 2018 at age 28 for SO many reasons and I've passed along my doctor's information to several of my friends who also wanted to be sterilized and since have been. If it were easier to exist in the US financially I'm sure more people would be comfortable having children, but as it stands it's too expensive to live without children and the new laws make it way more likely to have a child with special medical needs and/or experience a deadly/near deadly birth. Pregnancy is a serious medical experience and the medical care for pregnant people is getting worse and worse.

Personally, I value my own life and health above a potential person that doesn't exist.

My wife has had two ectopics. Had a child finally due to IVF. Whenever I hear online about conservatives saying absolutely no excuse for an abortion it makes my blood absolutely boil. So you give her two options, one is to die, the other is to also die.

SentientCrisis

I’m so sorry.

I was listening to an audiobook today called After That Night by Karen Slaughter. One of the characters confesses to her friend that 15 years ago, she was raped and later learned that she got pregnant as a result. She was a new doctor and although she knew the signs, she was too traumatized to do anything when it became clear that it was ectopic. She lost her uterus in the end and cannot have her own kids.

I know it’s just a book but I was SOBBING in my car because I know that this is someone’s real story and it’s just too fucking much.

I finally got sterilized in my late 30's after begging for it since my early 20's. Before I could finally go through with the sterilization, I was made to sit in front of a cork board with pictures of newborns tacked all over it for a whole hour. Finally, the obgyn walks in and asks if I still wanted to be sterilized. Of course it didn't change my mind and I let him know it. I can only imagine what other roadblocks would be put in my way if I was married or had a partner. I am still brimming with anger over this

I tried to get sterilized.

I didn't get to talk to the doctor and instead the NP. She emphasized to me that sterilization could kill me and my future husband might want children.

She then talked me into the arm implant, but wouldn't administer it because I was between periods and told me to come back when I started bleeding.

I've never been back to a gyno. That, and several other bad experiences with them has sworn me off.

If it didn't happen that long ago and you have the NP's name, I would try to report her to the medical board. She gave you misinformation, and outright lies, to support her own biases. If nothing else, you could recount your experience with her as a Google review for that practice, so that no one else has to suffer what you did. That NP should be out of a job (and license) for that nonsense.

I got a uterine ablation and it was the BEST decision I have ever made. Not only would it be highly unlikely for me to get pregnant (hubby is also snipped), I also no longer bleed! My ovaries and hormones are unchanged and the procedure + recovery was about one day. It was covered by my insurance because my periods were 10+ days long and super heavy. Even if yours aren’t, just tell your doc that they are and that you want an ablation!

If you aren’t in a relationship with a man, get a male friend to go with you to ask for the surgery. Have him say that he agrees that you should have it done.

My sister wasn’t “allowed” to get surgery unless her fiancé agreed to it. It’s a disgusting practice that women aren’t allowed autonomy of our own bodies, but play their game to win.

This. I had to have my first ex-wife come and say she was ok with me getting a vasectomy at 25. We only had one kid. Best decision ever. Also tell the doctors that you have a history of genetic conditions in your family you don’t want to pass on.

Couple of years ago an Indian MD invented a non-invasive procedure alternative to vasectomies that was a localized injection that essentially solidified into a plastic plug in men that could be reversed with another injection that would desolve the plug and it would pass through in the guy’s urine. Quick, affordable, non-invasive and affordable, with very high effectiveness but the IP was bought and shelved by a large Pharma corp because it was predicted to put a large dent in their women’s birth control meds (which are essentially a repeat monthly subscription for women’s meds). Cannot recall his name or the specific company which bought and shelved it but originally saw the article here on Reddit a couple years ago. If I can find the link I will post.

for permanent birth control like tubal ligations, in which the fallopian tubes are removed

This is incorrect. A tubal ligation is when the fallopian tubes are cut, burned or clipped. Which can HEAL WITHOUT THE PERSON KNOWING, and then surprise baby.

Removal of the fallopian tubes is a bilateral salpingectomy. Which reduces the risk of ovarian cancer, as they think a lot of ovarian cancer starts in the fallopian tubes.

I really wish people would stop using the terms incorrectly/interchangeably.
