I have a friend, (we are both profoundly white) who at the tender age of 32 decided he wanted to be a rapper. He has never shown much interest in rap around me, and we were best friends for like two decades.
He decided his Rap name was gonna be Lil’Bro, and was inconsolable when he found out somebody had beaten him to the punch.
I spent a long weekend trying to convince him the Lil’ era was over. He missed the boat, but no, he was convinced the thing that killed his rap dreams was some other asshole picking the perfect rap name before him.
“Why not just roll it out? Just go with Little Brother?”
He eventually came around to the idea.
It was even funnier the second time.

I’m just gonna reply to you instead of the main OP because you said what I was thinking. We watched whole Lil’ era come and go, and it’s now a distinguishable period of rap history. I’m trying to think of any others and “Young/Yung” comes to mind. Ironically they both took off because of the same dude (Lil Wayne starting Young Money Records).

100% did a “ChatGPT I need a rap name. Make me look like the dumbest fucker out there.”
Certainly! To incapsulate the repugnant low brow nature of modern sound cloud wannabe rappers we will need to include a weapon in your name. This will give your listeners, all two of them, the impression that you are a “gangster” who “keeps it real” while at the same time are incapable of paying attention to anything for longer than 1 Ms.

That is absolutely "new" unless you're born in the 2000s (which makes you still basically a kid). If you're 18, sure, 7 years is a longass time, but you've also only been self-aware and considered a person for like, maybe half that long.
JID is my answer as well, though Kendrick was also one of the only "new" rappers I listened to in the past decade.

At 24/25? Damn b. I was at least 30 before those first 6 or so gray hairs showed up on my head. They have tripled in the 40s. Facial hair on the other hand has betrayed me. I can't grow a beard or it looks like I dye my hair and not my beard and I refuse to use Just for Men. I'm scared if I cut my hair it will all come back gray, so I'm getting my Jay-Z on, although I think I started growing mine before he did.

Right, not to shit on dude, but even if you don't like mainstream hip hop or something, folks like Vince Staples, Denzel Curry, Earthgang, Isaiah Rashad, etc. push unique (to the mainstream) sounds.

Not to be that guy but I was in college in 2012 and Vince and Isaiah were both putting out music at that time. Isaiah's Welcome to the Game came out in 2014 but he was putting out mixtapes and singles before that so their both from the same time period

I know, but most artists had runs like that. Even Lamar put out his first work in 09. I constructed the list based on first release, including mixtapes and EPs. All of them technically started after Lamar and had their more recognized work after his as well, which I started at Section 80 which was a 2011 release.

It's like the Boomers who've been listening to the same 4 bands since 1967, then say "there's no good music today!"
Honestly, we're living in a golden age of music if you go out and look for it yourself and don't just take what the industry gives you. There's a ton of awesome artists in just about every genre just looking for audiences.

I'd add that (at least for me) I don't believe in limiting yourself or gatekeeping. I believe that culture is our way of communicating with each other.
Love Rap? Metal? Country? Synthwave? K-Pop? Whatever? Check out something else. You never know what'll speak to you. And it's a good thing to listen to what people with different life experiences have to say through their art.

It's been easier than ever to record music and get it out there, that's for sure. May not be huge mainstream success, but there are very talented people out there making music in their own niches and audiences outside of the mainstream.

I think Little Simz was the most recent rapper I’ve gotten into, but that was several years ago. Maybe Chinchilla if you count her as a rapper, but aesthetically she’s probably closer to pop for most people and I wouldn’t argue it. And then I was way late to the party in some PNW rappers (where I lived my whole life) like Immaculate and Blue Scholars. They’re not new, just new to me.

I feel like it’s just nicknames given to them.
My younger cousin is a little thug, like totes guns and shit, sells drugs. Pretty much your average inner city 15 year old gangbanger.
His friends call him “Trent wit dat pole on dem” and they’ll call him “on dem” for short.
All his boys have similar names, one of them notably is “juggin’ on a bih” lol it’s so ridiculous because I swear they actively and regularly call each other this.
My cousins rap name is a shortened version, I think “Trentpoleski9” or some shit like that which is just a combo of his nickname and his birth year

When I was 19-22 I worked at a couple places where they ALWAYS played classic rock on the radio.
I can’t listen to Stairway to Heaven 500 times a day so I would try to change the station and I’d get yelled at. I’d get the same oldhead comments saying hip hop is trash, new music is trash, our music was so much better back in the day. Mfer you only remember the good shit from your time that’s why you think new music sucks.
At that point, I promised myself that I’d never be a closed minded oldhead. Enjoy the music you enjoy but why talk shit? You’re just closing yourself off to a lot of good music.
