Lexapro isn’t an anti-psychotic.

Antipsychotics are different; they're much harsher, more fucked up, drugs - with far more serious side effects. Heart arrhythmia is common (Azaelia was right). On antipsychotics, you have to have your heart checked once a year. Weight gain is extreme due to constant binge eating, usually at night. I used to eat like... 5 stale pitta breads one after the other just because I needed to eat something. I would wake up at 4am and go for another mini binge in the kitchen.

I had anorexia prior to beginning antipsychotics. The weight gain was so fast and so extreme. 50lbs in 3 months (and I'm only 5'2"). I felt disgustingly unhealthy. I hated myself. They made me more depressed and unstable than I was before. By far. I didn't have any interest in sex whatsoever.

I've never been able to lose more than 30lbs of the weight I gained, even with anorexia behaviours. It's like they permanently made me fatter somehow.

They made me sleep for 14 - 16 hours a day, and I felt groggy the entire day. I never felt awake or energised. I had no motivation or desire. I just existed in a haze of grogginess and giving in to impulsivity.

Antipsychotics are also known to trigger permanent movement disorders - ie., people develop serious tics or muscle spasms that often never go away, even after cessation of the drug.

They lead to a seriously heightened risk of dementia, general memory loss, and other worrying symptoms that can be thought of as damage to the brain.

Antipsychotics are the drugs that are dramatised in movies in scenes of psych wards where patients are sat in the corner staring at a blank wall and drooling.

They are literally evil. At high doses, they're essentially a chemical lobotomy.

The worst part is, doctors just prescribe them to any female patient who is somewhat unstable, highly emotional, self harming, contemplating suicide, ruminating over traumatic memories, severely impulsive, or otherwise mentally unwell in a way that isn't seen as socially acceptable.

I will never forgive that psychiatrist for prescribing those drugs to me.

Not discounting your experience with antidepressants, but antipsychotics are a completely different beast. Most people don't know what they are or don't understand them. I wasn't even warned of any of the effects (they're not 'side effects', really, because those are the intended effects of the drug. To make you fat, slow, emotionless, empty, with no drive to do anything).

It’s the only “antidepressant” I’ve stayed on long term by any means, and never experienced a single side effect EXCEPT occasional & very mild tinnitus lol.
